Thanks for the upload! This WILL be my next watch. My current daily driver is a SRPD55 that I put on an Uncle Seiko waffle and just love the thing. If I could wave a magic wand and change anything it would be make it just a teeny bit shorter in height and have an all brushed case. Seiko answered and released this SPB317 - classic colourway, classic aluminum bezzle, all brushed case and just a teeny bit shorter than the SRPD. Absolutely timeless design. There's just no need to get all fancy and ruin the formula with gimmicks, I mean complications. You can't go wrong with understated. It never goes out of style.
For me this was the perfect dive watch, I was looking at the Willard reissue and the King Turtle, then I found this one and it had everything I wanted in my first automatic Seiko. Plus I prefer rubber straps, they just work, and it's the main reason why I wear my Arnie so much.
I don’t understand why everyone is bashing the price. It compares to a Tudor Black Bay in specs and wearability for 1/3 of the price. I think it’s a steal, it depends what you compare it to

Got mine 2 days ago for a little over 700.00 from Arizona fine timepieces. 1st purchase from them and it was awesome. Sent an offer they approved and I asked if they could pick the one out with best alignment. The replied saying no problem at all. Love this piece on my 7.5 inch wrist. Immediately put it on strapcode waffle.
I have the new 8000 gilt , i love it, the new style braclett is really nice and very comfortable. only down side is only two micro ajustments available.6r35 movement seems to be very accurate for me on wrist, a bit indifferent on bed side locker. All brushed case and braclett looks really killer. and you'll also notice the new short clasp , more braclett showing. I would like to thank you for all the work you put in to your channel , Long time subscriber , and Hi from Ireland.
It's not cheap, but I guess Seiko knows the nostalgia it brings. So Seiko knew how people like me would pull the trigger on this. I was willing to pay premium for the emotional factor that it brings. And for the size, too. I just have a 6.25-in wrist, and couldn't have enjoyed anything bigger than this watch. Even the Land Turtle felt big. But this one, oh boy, feels perfect and comfortable on my wrist. So I also have to thank Seiko for coming out with something that's accessible to persons with small wrists. For all that, I paid a premium. Can't say I'm disappointed.
@@TillSwims This is true, although the Land Turtle has a larger diameter at 42.4mm compared to the 41mm of the Slim Turtle. I tried both, and the Land Turtle seemed to wear a bit larger. So I guess, it really depends on how it wears on the person. Nothing beats trying them on before pulling the trigger. Cheers!
Seiko has foreseen the hyperflation and started it before it was cool. Now the rest of the world is keeping up with Seiko and their prices will eventually look normal. Genius move.
The term you are looking for is hyperinflation and no we are not there yet for a while. Seiko believes by raising prices to luxury level they can enter the luxury market while chinese homage manufacturers turn out the same models for seiko prices of years past.
I love the look of this watch - The hands are perfect and I love the size. But I agree the price is too high for me but once there are discounts I would be interested
A really tough sell. Even if it's made in Japan, the Japanese yen is way down this year, versus the dollar, so the price doesn't make sense. This is a chunk of steel, regular movement (6r-whatever) and 200m - a $250 watch from five years ago.

Bingo! Lose that darn unsettling timegrapher and wear your Seiko. When fully wound, they run remarkably accurately (mine within a second per day on the wrist). Cheers, Rob!
I have the Willard in this same color and same movement. So far it's running +2 seconds a day. Haven't been able to put this watch down since I got it.
Coincidentally, Nick helped me purchase a Grand Seiko Spring Drive last week. He gave me a great deal. It was pre-owned but it looked brand new. Regarding this watch, I think it’s worth the price. I like the Turtle, but the indices look cheap and I’m over bigger watches. This watch looks more refined than the Turtle, so for me, it’s worth the price. A Rolex is double the price of a Tutor, but not really twice the watch. I know they’re minor differences, but it makes a world of difference.
This is about as perfect as a non-8L Seiko diver gets. I’m more than happy to pay the asking price. The fact that it hasn’t caught fire is frankly mind boggling. I guess these days Seiko “fans” need an influencer to validate a Seiko diver first before they can get excited about it 🙄
Most people are to sane to pay 900 bucks for an off the shelf middle of the run Seiko. No offense. But when you ask that kind of money with all the competing brands out there (many of them use a selitta sw200 eta2824 clone, which is arguably better than this one), Seiko has a hard time to justify their price. At least for their prospex line with a basically unregulated movement and the bezel not aligned perfectly. There are so many divers at that size out there and for all kinds of prices. Lower, higher whatever. Seiko seems to be trying to figure out how much they can demand.
Such a sleek Seiko diver. I like the power reserve. My only gripe is the traffic light second hand. Had it been anything else, I most likely would have bought it. Just like you, I have a Turtle and I'll be sticking with that for now.
Thumbs down on the power reserve. The watch runs at 3Hz, that's the only reason why the power reserve is longer. And it's an automatic. if 40-50 hours isnt enough, is 80? doesnt make much sense to me.
i agree with you rob. i wore the watch day and night for a week. i measured the rate deviation every day and it averaged +7 seconds. the highest rate deviation was +12 sec/24h and the lowest rate deviation was +4 sec/24h
If it had Tudor, Doxa or any other entry level luxury on the dial you wouldnt think twice in paying 900 USD. And you wouldnt think it doesnt live up to those expectations.
Waiting for mine to return, after being sent off to be regulated. After a month of everyday wear, the 6R35 movement was averaging -30 seconds per day slow. WTF Seiko?
I always had issues with Seiko movements running poorly. My Sarb, SKX, and 5 series. I bought the SNE573 and love it. The solar quartz is accurate and has all the things Seiko I love. I had no issue with Seiko because they're affordable watches. But moving up on prices they need better movements IMO.

Its worth $900 because in ten years time it will still be worth $700 or more. Buy an everyday better spec watch that isn't a Seiko it will be worth nothing. Seiko bracelets are just awful to me. (except the chintzy rattly SKX 007 jubilee). I will wait for Uncle Seiko to come up with a decent replacement. My Seiko 317 is the only Seiko I will ever own now. But hey, we all need to have one Seiko in the collection and this piece wears fantastic
Got this for around 600usd recently, runs a bit fast +5s/day , doesn't feel it'll look good on my 16cm wrist but well i am ok with it after wearing it. Nice and good watch but nothing to shout about except that I'm a fan of that 'hidden' date and the slim profile

I kept thinking how all of your points were checking all of my boxes.... until about 5 minutes in. $900 is making that $400 dollar watch look much more doable. Maybe in a few years this Seiko will be selling for a reduced price and I'll snag one.
Great review! I thought for sure that your one nitpick was going to be the date position. I am glad that it was done. Exclamation, I like the location of the date and this fact that it’s discrete. I agree that the price is a few hundred dollars too high.
Typical of recent Seikos with a large price increase with little to justify it. A King Turtle for half that is the only newer release release in line with price. Interesting case on this.
I still prefer the SKX007 chassis to any of the Turtle case variants. Just like you always did Rob in your earlier videos when you were transposing Turtle movements into SKX bodies. And ,I think for even less than $760?.. and, u can be sure it's all aligned and I think regulated as well as the movement they can be... AND, they have their new NodusX adjustable clasp!
I love this one. But I'm going to hold off on getting it because I know that Seiko is going to release a metric ton of variants, and there will be a colorway I enjoy way more than the ones currently out. And the sizing makes it better for my small wrist than the new titanium Citizen Challenge Diver reissue. I can wear a 47mm lug to lug watch much more easily than a 48.5, titanium aside. I don't like the price either, but it'll be $700 by next summer I'm sure.
agreed, just black and white options is lackluster. ask for discounts, I went to my AD and asked for a better price on a SPB315J on bracelet and got it for 830USD. could of picked up the SPB317 for $630USD.
Seiko movement's are just not very well temperature compensated. When they heat up on your wrist they run slower than when they're cold and on the timegrapher
I have been wearing my 2018 STO Turtle on a tropic strap to keep me from buying this. The only way this would justify the new price is if the level of finishing is on par with my old SBDC051. If it's not worth the money I have also looked at an homage to this watch by a company called Rdunae which gets good reviews for about $180.
Take the slimmer case of the Land Tortoise, make it slab-sided, and swap out the movement. That's basically this watch in terms of materials. (Although, the rubber strap here is likely worth more than the cheap canvas of the Tortoise.) This one should come down in street price later on, as the Tortoise did. But the price gap will be just big regardless. I can see this one being worth $700 tops, only because of the 6R.
I know we like aluminum but if this had a ceramic bezel and came in bracelet, I would feel a little better about that price but this should be in that 600 dollar sweet spot esp on strap
I dont think there's much advantage to single dome, maybe it's a bit thicker toward the centre of the crystal which might be a very slight advantage. I had a Seiko Shogun with a single dome and I hated the double reflection, one from the domed top and another from the flat inner surface that I ended modding it with a double dome.
you had me until the price....I will not be able to stomach that price. (not saying that it isn't worth it, but just out of my price range for a Seiko)
Wow. Another casual brush-off of imperfect QC on a near $1k watch. Seiko hate their overseas buyers. And to think that the originals of these back in the day were high quality and cheap(ish). That's progress. Meanwhile, is that a San Martin.....?
Way too expensive and tends to be sold out. Not worth the asking price when you can get the same from an homage manufacturer and fit it with aftermarket seiko dial for under $250.
I love Seiko, this has a great case & beautifull hands, great lume.. But i want a bezel to line up, surely it is not beyond seiko to make a watch with a proper bezel that lines up-if they cannot it's because they are taking us for granted, time to look elsewhere!
Agreed but have been burned by the lack of support from micro brands, so have moved back to looking at Seiko. I have been collecting Seikos since the early 1970s and never have issues getting OEM parts for my watches, even my 1972 Pogue when it needed a major overhaul. Many people forget this advantage of purchasing established name brands.
The white dial SPB313 is really special and looks fantastic! Great size and so wearable.

If they moved the date to 6 o’clock and finally released a decent clasp, I’d consider it for $900.
Alot of the Seiko divers now have the same design
Nice watch but man that pricing is crazy. You wouldn't find me shelling out that sort of cash...
I’ll probably get the black or grenade one day. But I want it with a domed sapphire
Agree, the price is way too much. I have the tortoise and it's a slim turtle shape with compass at half the price!
Seiko movement's are just not very well temperature compensated. When they heat up on your wrist they run slower than when they're cold and on the timegrapher
seiko is all over the board with the lume now :(
Do not understand why you talk about the price on this piece. Compared to the SPB143 and Willard the watch is 95% the same and this is even cheaper!
There's no satisfying some people!
Slim Turtle????? why??
Used you can get this in the $500-$600 range
Second too late comment, but this sits on the wrist with the silicone in a crazy good way as a Seiko, Sinn, Tudor owner.
The new seikos with the 6r35 just don't have the same lume.
(Although, the rubber strap here is likely worth more than the cheap canvas of the Tortoise.)
This one should come down in street price later on, as the Tortoise did. But the price gap will be just big regardless. I can see this one being worth $700 tops, only because of the 6R.
600 more like it tho
💟
I think they're going in the right direction. Problems aligning the chapter ring? No problem, just remove it
What exactly does “slim turtle” mean? This watch doesn’t have a turtle case it’s a generic tonneau……. 🤔
Single-domed sapphire is cheaper as you only grind one face
I doubt the cost any different they are mass produced and ground on automated machines mate...
I agree it's far too expensive. To me it should be half the price.
I know we like aluminum but if this had a ceramic bezel and came in bracelet, I would feel a little better about that price but this should be in that 600 dollar sweet spot esp on strap
Aluminium bezels look better more vibrant.
Good price to me
I dont think there's much advantage to single dome, maybe it's a bit thicker toward the centre of the crystal which might be a very slight advantage.
I love the Seiko but not the price! I like the stoplight second hand and really love the automatic sweep! The second hand reminds me of the Willard
Wow. Another casual brush-off of imperfect QC on a near $1k watch. Seiko hate their overseas buyers. And to think that the originals of these back in the day were high quality and cheap(ish). That's progress. Meanwhile, is that a San Martin.....?
$650 - $700 max.
Crying over $200, another cheap bastard.
They charge you 300$ for the sapphire crystal that is worth 30$ lol
Why so much money when I can get a steeldive. Same design, more quality for the money and absolute workhorse of a movement.
Then stop watching these videos. Go stick to your beloved cheapazz microbrands.
I don't see a single reason to buy this watch considering its QC considering that microbrands have already gotten much better with that.
Agreed but have been burned by the lack of support from micro brands, so have moved back to looking at Seiko. I have been collecting Seikos since the early 1970s and never have issues getting OEM parts for my watches, even my 1972 Pogue when it needed a major overhaul. Many people forget this advantage of purchasing established name brands.
get a samurai or turtle...before they too are $900

Time keeping is poor!!! Should be less than 5 seconds per day. It is 2023 after all
