    Teslacam Stories is a series of Tesla owners real experiences told by the Tesla Dashcam and Sentry Mode videos. All incidents are recorded from Tesla vehicles and submitted to this channel by other Tesla enthusiast. I contact each person who send me their videos to talk with them and learn more about their story and to follow up what happened after what we see on their video. Voice over and captions are added to describe what happened, and why. I believe that this additional information regarding the incident gives the videos a newsworthy value.
    From the footage and additional information, a viewer can learn the consequences of bad driving and can educate his/her self with better driving safety. This process also gives the videos a great educational value. It is my desire to add my own unique and creative value in a transformative way to ensure you enjoy and learn from the videos being presented.

    What I take from the video is this:
    1. Autopilot reacts well in many situations
    2. Most of the situations wouldn't even happen if the drivers were paying attention in the first place.

    • @VoxelLoop
      @VoxelLoop 3 ปีที่แล้ว +156

      2 is a great takeaway, people say about how unsafe self-driving vehicles are and how they wouldn't avoid some situations, but a lot of these situations are caused by other cars not being self-driving.
      That last guy that was drunk, imagine how much safer he would have been on the FSD Beta compared to that?

      Autopilot turns terrible drivers into slightly less terrible drivers. Any average driver would avoid the system ever being needed. It has no perception of what is going to happen next it can only react to what is happening, so drastically reduces it's ability to avoid many crashes. That's why it's decades away from coming close to a human (well a competent one anyway).

    • @VoxelLoop
      @VoxelLoop 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@nothingsurprisesmeanymore The FSD Beta has improved upon that 'Only reacting to what it sees' situation, with it even understanding when a pedestrian has gone out of view when walking behind a parked vehicle for example.
      Navigate on Autopilot also has a lotttttttt of data about cut-ins and what one looks like as it's about to happen, though it still doesn't react to indicators yet still which is a bit annoying!
      There's still plenty of stuff we as humans expect other humans to do, this is the part that will be very challenging for Tesla. However... As more and more vehicles become 'self-driving', there's less and less humans doing stupid things. :)

    I was using Autopilot FSD on my Model X Plaid on Sunday. Going southbound on I-880 approaching the fork where there were three lanes, left land was headed to I-680 East and right lane was headed to I-880 South. The middle lane was a fork / split lane that one could chose going either left for I-680 East or I-880 South. The car was undecisive. It first steered to the left, which was the intented path due to my set destination. However, it suddenly steered back to the right, trying to go I-880 South, then it changed to the left again, and suddenly it was approaching the central divider, the steering wheel cleared turned to the right again and we almost hit the central divider, which was about 40-50 feet away and we were travelling at 45 mph following the traffic in front. Luckily, I always stayed alert for the entire trip. Autopilot is still not there yet. It may save lives in some situations, it still can cost lives in other situations. Especially when it rain too, the message comes up frequently, "the right side camera is blocked, ... " or "the left side camera is blocked, FSD is not available." So, it still need a lot of time to perfect the system. It is far from good enough to be 100 percent hands-off experience. And, that is why Tesla is upgrading also the cameras to 5 mega-pixels starting this year from the previous 2 mp cameras. So, please do not get overly confident of the system which a lot of people here sound like they are.

      Exactly. These autopilot users who say they didn’t see it coming weren’t doing their part to still be part of controlling the car. It’s called 360 degree situational awareness and it’s something every driver of every vehicle should be doing all the time. I don’t own a Tesla. Does the autopilot feature mean you don’t even have to have your hands on the wheel for extended periods of time? I am from Germany. Seeing this, I seriously have some doubts that those drivers could get a license. "When traffic suddenly came to a stop." Suddenly? You could see traffic piling up like half a minute earlier, how on earth did the driver (or the autopilot) think it was a good idea to not slow down? 90% of all maneuvres shown could have either been easily prevented by just driving with a bit of foresight or are maneuvers everyone should learn how to pull off in driving school. "Impaccable traction control" while swerving at 50 mph (That's around 80 km/h)? That's called a car, once your car can't be handled like that at 80 km/h, you should get a new one immediately. Also the fact that people obviously relied on the autopilot to take action even in dangerous situations, makes me nervous. It'd be nice to have such a system, but as the video clearly shows, it is nowhere near to a "perfect" system. The merging truck? Every good driver would have just slowed down and let him merge, regardless of right of way.
    Enough ranting: There are a few situations where Autopilot actually did save lifes, and that's a good thing.

    1:52 - I had something like this happen to me on Massachusetts I-93 between I-495 and 28 twenty years ago. I was in the "one" lane and a Honda in front of me was weaving between the line and the gravel. I started to move over to the "two" lane when the Honda lost it, swerved, over-corrected, and careened across all the lanes to the right, then over-corrected again and careened across all of the lanes and T-boned the barrier in the median. The Honda missed me by about 10 feet both times. The video here stood the hair up on the back of my neck.

    autopilot will legit save lives. in situations like when the traffic "suddenly" stops and you need to swerve, the autopilot would be able to do it instantly, and it would know whether someone is behind, and if there is, it makes sure to only tap them a bit at best

    As a Belgian citizen, I can attest that number 4 rarely if ever happens. This is why you don't even pay attention to it, cuz it never happens. It's amazing to even get it on camera! Thank the gods the car said "miss me" before anything happens.

    • @REVOLUTIONS51
      @REVOLUTIONS51 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, just to ask for your knowledge for Belgium rules, but in Italy it's a particular situation. This manouver was obviously illegal, but I'd like to ask about the rule in general, because for the rules we have in Italy it's not illegal for the overtake on the right -because it would not classify as an overtake-, just for changing lane recklessly. Overtaking on the right is illegal, but not everything you think is classified as an overtake, how does it works in Belgium? I mean, if the van was traveling on the right lane (the left lane was clear so why pass on the right if not because you are already traveling on the right) then it would not be classified as an overtake in Italy, just a change of lane. To be an illegal overtake on the right you would have to be on the same lane as the Tesla, change lane to the right, get past the Tesla and go back to the center. If from behind the Tesla you change lane to the right, get past the Tesla and then remain on the right it would not be an overtake. If from already on the left lane you get past the Tesla and then move in front of it to overtake a truck it would be an overtake on the truck and a legal change of lane in front of the Tesla, if there's enough space to do it safely.

      @@REVOLUTIONS51 In Belgium it is illegal to pass people on the right. Overtaking on the right counts with this rule. Even if someone were to drive in the middle lane, and I were to drive in the upmost right lane, I am still not allowed to even pass the car. I have to keep driving behind, and if I do decide to overtake, no matter how much space I have in front of me, I will have to switch to the middle lane behind the car I wanna overtake, and then do the manoeuvre on the left. In Belgium overtaking counts as passing someone on either side (the right one being illegal), and then merging into their lane. Doesn't matter what lane you came from behind them. The only time passing someone on the right is legal, is when there's slow traffic and you're just following along.

    • @REVOLUTIONS51
      @REVOLUTIONS51 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@XTheBeautyGuruX okok, so it's a different definition of overtake. It is to be said that even though it's legal is not common to pass on the right a slower car in the lane on your left: most highway are 3 lanes, many minor ones even 2, just the really main ones are 4, so there's just not many occasions. But sometimes it comes handy as in the few km I take on commute almost daily I'm used to stay on the right most lane when possible. It's 4 lane, I usually go near the speed limit 130 and many times there are lane hoggers that stays all the time in the 2* and 3* lane at maybe 100. I usually *pass not overtake* them on the right, honk the horn just to get their attention and continue on my lane. I always hope they'll get I'm not the one going to fast on the right but they are the ones going slow on the left, as per law you should always keep the right as much as possible, if I can *pass* you it means you are not occupying the lanes correctly... Note for everyone I'm darn concentrated while driving, I always expect other driver to make the stupidest move, per job i drive ambulances and I'm used to people panic and do shit when they have a siren behind like slamming on the brakes at 90 km/h (not joking) on highway-like roads, or groups of cars cutting you off after initially letting you trough, busses pulling over and then while you overtake them driving off again pushing you in the opposite lane, people doing really original tricks at roundabout and so on, while driving my car (super light and more manovrable than an ambulance) I do have quite a margin of safety against other people's stupidity.

      We are still better than machines in driving bec our vision are better than them. Not because our reaction times are faster. They cant sense too far, thats why humans still driving. And this video's situations "generally" in open traffic where we humans are at the advantage, so yeah most people can avoid these crashes including me. But in situations where both machines and humans sense at the same time, machines wins easily.
      In a nutshell: I am still saying the same thing, machines has insane reaction speed. Maybe a few hundreds to thousands times better than us.
