Hate among politics, society, economy, generation, and gender is intensifying. Not only celebrities but also their fans are being hated. It's a song that says, "Let's overcome the age of hate with love." 'Cube' refers to discrimination against the main characters, and furthermore, various discriminations and oppression prevalent in our daily lives. The setting value of the screen on which the camcorder is taken is a world that was fine before it was ruined. The two are implied to be floating in the air on the last camcorder screen, meaning they can fly free from all kinds of oppression and pressure.
It is also a tendency being spread in the West, like here in Europe. Those in power want us all to be busy hating each other, be it race, gender, beliefs, blah While we are hating each other, busy being jealous and nasty we aren't realising how evil they are and what are really actual crimes they are committing, how they are increasing censorship etc and no one is aware or most don't even care... 😢
The director had his more literal take on the cube. But its open for interpretation. I find IU's notes on the song more poetic personally. Besides the "overcome hate with love" bit, it talks about the fear of "setting", which can be interpreted as impending doom, endings, losing it all, etc... and how "love wins all", you can find joy in the moment and no longer fear the end. The whole theme of "rising" & "setting" with me
I'm just copy pasting an explaination I saw under another video: The Cube represents society, it is chasing every individual who doesn't fit the standards of society. Here V is half blind, IU is deaf and mute. So they are running from oppression of society. The world is controled by these standards of perfection to the point that people in the world put masks on when they don't have make-up or when they feel inssecure or they wear hats when their hair is messy. The MV is a dystopian view of our society. While they are trying to hide in this abondonned place filled with the clothes of people who died because of this oppression, they find a camera that allows them to have an illusion of what their lives could be if they were "normal" by society's standards, it starts with their looks, they could see how they would have looked like, then what they would eat, then they start to feel the illusion a bit too much to the point they beautifully imagine that IU could sing and V could sing as well and she could listen to his voice, they could marry each other and just have fun and eat whatever they want because they wouldn't have to care about society or any other kind of oppression. However, as soon as they feel a little bit of confort and try to live their life, the Cube (society) finds them again and push them to retreat and flee again, but the Cube managed to find them again, they try to survive against it and try to fight it as hard as they can, but they cannot beat a stronger system, they just give up but at least they stayed together until the end. Even if they died at the end, they loved each other deeply, it shows that even if society is oppressive, people can love each other and they can find their soulmate even if they are not "normal or perfect" to the eyes of some many others. The pile of clothes is like from Spring Day, these people died because of injustice, but they deserved love, so the pile of clothes can look very gloomy and sad, but as in Spring Day MV if you don't forget them you can seem them happy and free where they are right now...
Honestly, I’d like to think this is IU’s commentary on recent horrible incidents born of oppresive, biased, ignorant society and corruption. I surely hope her doing sign language is a nod to late Lee Sun-Kyun, whom she acted in My Mister with. Not a romantic song but a desperate cry for compassion. Thinking that’s the reason behind Knetz attack.
I can’t believe people are mad at this video??? Like I understand the implication but I really thought this was well done! I could be missing something, but especially now when people are being persecuted for things they can control it felt poignant to make a film about the struggle to live not just survive. Also a little sad V didn’t sing I think his voice on this would have been beautiful.

The cube represents the Korean music and film industry, where every artist is under threat of social pressure, where one wrong move can ruin their careers, where they can be intimidated by the media and end their lives, living under stress and constant fear. Through the lens of a video camera, artists, idols of many, are beautiful and happy, but in real life they are very vulnerable. The Industry sucks all the juice out of them and then throws them away as if they were old and unnecessary clothes. In South Korea, the big music lobbies have a way of treating artists that is scary. If they see that they are good and successful, they take everything and more out of each of them, becoming ruthless. But when they have been exploited to the point of exhaustion, they leave them aside like broken toys. More than one artist has ended up committing suicide. Everything is very sad. At its end the trolls/ media come to consume another artist and fandom and discard it like a pile of clothes and IU is ready to fight but V (the fans) steps in front of her to defend her and their bond, but they are met with a bitter end. A sad reality every artist must face someday. She sheilds V's good eye to protect him from the inevitable. .😭😭😭😭
