I still remember the first time I saw this on TV. I was 16, had been through some tough times, and thought I understood the feelings they portrayed - and of course I cried.
Now in 2023 I'm 30, and I've been living with a rare chronic illness for 12 years. Over time, the illness has slowly taken almost all the things I hold dear. I am, and my life is a shell of what it used to be. It may not be addiction, but it drags me down and will never ever leave me.
This piece has taken on a whole new meaning for me, and it pulls at that piece of my soul that desperately wants to be free.
No matter what you're going through - if it's somewhat or completely out of your control, this masterpiece speaks to it.
Dance is the language of the soul ❤

This song meant an abusive relationship to me, but how she made it about addiction is just unbelievable. I cry to this dance every time.

  • @SpicyAzzMeatball
    @SpicyAzzMeatball 10 ปีที่แล้ว +204

Absolutely breathtaking. I think that Kupono played the role of the addiction itself perfectly. The fiendish look and the force in which his throws her around is very indicative of how violently these substances come to control a victim's life. And the expressions on Kayla's face...my heart broke. It's so close to home that I want to hate it, but it was performed so incredibly that I have no choice but to love it.

I heard this song today and basically had a flash back to this dance. I remembered I had watched a beautiful solo or duet years ago like over 8 to 9 at least. Well I just found it and it’s brought tears to my eyes and I’m crying. Today me and my abusive on and off again boyfriend of the past 5 years have broken up. It’s just such a beautiful depiction of it thank you for this. Truly so beautiful

Channel surfing I found sytycd. This piece was bone chilling. His gruesome grip as she struggles to free herself the buoyancy as she comes back time and again this is my addiction and it is a vicious cycle when I'm feeling low I view this and never give up hope of my gravity to be free.

  • @emberdaysband

This dance moved me years ago when it first aired by showing me--in visual terms--my addiction to a certain kind of person who taunts you with just enough affection to hold you in chains, but only wants complete power over you. I've revisited it over the last few days as a reminder of just how close I came to repeating the pattern recently and as a celebration of my final determination to break that addiction... I won't be kept down. I'm saying no this time.

This dance is so beautiful because it is brutally honest. Addiction to anything robs you of happiness. The male dancer in this routine depicts very well how disrespectful and how sensual an addiction can overtake and haunt you.

This. Damn. Dance. Every year I rewatch it. Every year, i cry. I have been through a lot in my life, and this hits home so much. I have never been through addiction, however, this song, to me represents depression, anxiety; all the horrible things people have said to me through my life holding me back, and this song...this damn dance....embodies every fiber of that feeling. This will forever be my favorite dance, hands down, no other.

Revisiting this piece and it hits different. My cousin recently died from an overdose after a long addiction battle. She came from a loving family, was stunningly beautiful, intelligent, hilarious, full of energy. Unfortunately addiction is ruthless and can take over even the most unsuspecting. I watch this number and think about what it must have been like for her. The solice is the thought and faith that she’s finally at peace. RIP cuz.

As someone who has family and friends battling addiction this dance is so powerful. This and Melissa and Ade's breast cancer dances are two of my favorites from season 5

One of my all-time favorites. Completely different from Cole's version, this one is more sensual and... seductive? Where Cole's is like a force of nature, cold and distant, Kupono is intense in a very chilling way. When he covers her mouth at :37... when he grabs her arm at 1:07... and his evil little smirk at the end. Because he knows, KNOWS, that she'll be back.
UGH. So good. So creepy! It gives me chills every time.

That Mia Michaels week in season 9 shouldn’t have happened. Why have different dancers try to replicate these incredible routines that can’t be done over the same? This addiction piece is by far one of the best contemporary routines of the show and should’ve gotten a standing ovation

Here in 2022. It is still so hard for me to watch any other dance show and not hold every piece to this one for comparison. Nothing else even remotely comes close. Come on! Kupono, addiction slowly bouncing the head to keep her steady, then hold her up with hands around the neck. What a masterpiece and and genius. The performance by Kayla and Kupono was brilliant.

This is probably the thousandth time I've watched this dance, but I just now noticed how fitting their outfits are. Her dress is stripped to threads while he's wearing strips from her dress like a belt, representing how an addiction can tear someone apart until they no longer resemble the person they used to be.
