I miss my best friend ...We were buddies since college but haven't met him since 2018. We talk once every 2 3 days about history and politics (WW1 and 2 often comes up). How I wish I could put my arm over his shoulder, put this song up on a speaker, smoke in dim lights and look at these two soldiers, imagining them looking back at us. Maybe they are from a real photo, maybe they were close friends, maybe they got separated during the war and longed to see each other for the rest of their lives. I wish I could drink a bottle with my friend after raising toast to the perhaps-lost (hopefully gone on forever) friendship of thes two soldiers.

Only in 2021 did I managed to track down an old friend of his from school who also wondered where he went. He managed to get in contact with said friend's sister, who told us that he had moved into the hills to follow a religious life as a monk. As part of his practice he no longer has any access to any sort of electronic devices. She also wouldn't cough up his address, only mentioning that his roommate might let him borrow the phone on occasion. That was the last we heard from her. Godspeed Bowen.

For anyone who may not know, this song is actually about the war ending.
The man is singing to a dead comrade, he tells him to get up, that the war is over, "Take your trenchcoat, let's go home."
Though obviously in this version theres the added ambient gunfire, which makes it almost more sad as it feels like the war still isn't over. That the song is being sang to remember the hundreds of dead surrounding the trenches, the ones who never got to go home, and the prospective hope that the war will end soon.

As a German who knows a lot abt the wars due to school (we learn everything abt it, which is good), it’s absolutely heartbreaking. It was so bad for everyone. My family also had loss due to war. And my family on my mom‘s side had Russian in school (I sadly don‘t). Somehow I feel really connected to this song and also to „dark is the night“.
I love art and Russia has some great stuff, especially the more depressed stuff. It makes me want to learn Russian and I think I might do that in the future.
I am a very emphatic person and have a good imagination, I have films playing when listening to songs. Imaging what happened, their loves missing them, craving to be reunited. Soldiers doing what they have to do, but they are not machines. It hurts losing friends and family, wanting to go back to their beloved wives.

If putin didn't do what he did i would've loved to learn the language and about the country itself. But sadly if i start i would be seen as if i'm on their side.

I would give anything to hear the voice of closest friend. After graduating high school and going our separate paths, communication was limited to online until more than 8 years when he told me of his desire to change is online profile. All efforts to reach him and through his siblings have been to no avail; not a single response was given by any of his them. Now I fear the worst and can only pray there’s another out-of-this world explanation. I miss my dear friend, James.

We on the right don't like this and it has indeed split people up. Though I imagine Biden and the left is going to fall out of favor soon with how badly his administration has run the country. People who hated Trump blindly are wanting him back. I could rant about it for hours but typing on a phone for that long would be uncomfortable.

And you and I, brother, are from the infantry,
And summer is better than winter.
We're done with the war, We're done
      with the war, We're done
with the war, We're done with the war, -
Take your overcoat, let's go home!
The war bent us and mowed us down,
It was the end of her, too.
Four years a mother without a son,
Four years a mother without a son,
For four years, a mother without a son, -
Take a greatcoat, let's go home!
To the ashes and to the ashes of our streets
      Again, again, my friend,
      the missing Starlings have returned,
      The missing starlings have returned,
The missing starlings have returned, -
Take your overcoat, let's go home!
And you with your eyes closed
You sleep under a plywood star.
Get up, get up, fellow soldier,
Get up, get up, fellow soldier,
Get up, get up, fellow soldier, -
Take your overcoat let's go home!
What will I tell your family,
How will I get up in front of the widow?
      Really swear by yesterday's day,
Really swear by yesterday 's day,
Really swear by yesterday's day, -
Take your overcoat and let's go home!
We are all crazy children of war,
Both the general and the private.
Spring is back in the white world,

a perfect song for Russian soldiers these days. "Get your trench coats lads, it's time to go home". Not much about battle-field heroism in this song - it's about tired soldiers who can't wait to get back home. I can visualize a group of soldiers huddling around a campfire, humming this song while one of them strums the guitar.
