This is the best tutorial. I found it years ago & come back periodically for a refresher. I like to make tissue box covers of different designs (Halloween, rubik's cube, winter theme). I come back to Paul's video again and again. I really appreciate the tip about how to get more coverage for the interior/back side. Thank you Paul!
10 years ago already? Man time flies :) All I can think of is how much younger I look here (no beard or really any hair) and that I should FIX MY DAMN FOCUS! This might be my least in focus video I ever made. Ah well. Glad it's still useful even if it's damn near impossible to watch :D
To thread your needle take about 6" tail of your piece of yarn at the end, fold in half over the EDGE of the eye of needle holding the two halves pinched very tight against the needle so your thumb nail will be right up against the needle and yarn halves creating a sharp crease. While still pinching tight on the yarn pull the needle out, Take the straight edge created and with a slight sawing motion back and forth of the eye push the crased folded edge through the eye till you can pinch the edge and pull through the needle. Adjust yarn for sewing. TaDa! Been a knitter for over 50 years and this how you thread a yarn needle. I hope these instructions are clear as it is so easy and quick. And THANK you for your tutorial! Great job!
Thanks for so much inspiration. I've never worked with plastic canvas, but watching your tutorial has my wondering if I can take some of your ideas, eg the tardis with the drawers and mod it a bid to make a case to carry my makeup when I'm travelling - loose shadow is great, but not so easy to travel with so better if I can make something that will contain the pots so that don't move around so much and I can't seem to find any decent travel cases with forces me to get creative. Now I just need to work out what nerdy think to theme in on,,,,hmm...
Plastic canvas would make a great way to transport your makeup around. I'd definitely recommend that the simpler you make it, the better. Would love to see some pics when you're done!
Great idea showing your techniques! I only wish the camera had stayed in focus better. Though it was still clear what you were doing so thanks for that. I learned a lot. :)
Thank you so much for this video! I was so confused on how to make one, but because of your video I'm not confused anymore! Thanks so so much, your so helpful!
Hi I just downloaded the pattern, I was wondering what type of yarn to buy for this project? Is 3 ply too small? I'm really not sure here. Thank you :)
Hi Behnaz. I don't have a specific size yarn or needle that I use for doing plastic canvas. I usually just look for an average size when looking for yarn. I'd stay away from anything for baby clothes, or anything super large though. As for the needle, I just look for ones marked specifically for plastic canvas. They'll be pretty big, and have a blunt end. I know that's not super helpful, but that's what works for me.
I don't. I just use a generic image editing sofware called pixelmator. I'll be uploading another video today where you can see me build the pattern I used in my latest G&S vlog.
hi paul i bought a book on plastic and i thought i would try my hand at cutting out a cupid it went okay but when it came to stitching it i did not under stand how to do it said to use up right cross stitches or back stitches or Gobelin st or tent st or overcast st or french st i tried up right cross st but it did not work then i try back st and tent st and the gobelin st i am new at this so can you give me any advice. were do i start this cupid the book i got this from is leisure arts. help me please
I need to know how to do a plastic canvas I have never done one before. I bought the one Nuts about you. I aways do regular cross stitch but I thought I would try something new. if u could tell me how to do it. I would appreciate it
Hi PauL, Thanks for the video, now I needlepoint birth announcements with all the details, names, date, weight etc etc. they are approx 5x6 on a fine mesh, my problem is, that once the work is finished, there tend to be "humps" in the work, so that when I frame them I need to put all sort of paper behind the work in order to not have these "humps " shown, is there any way one can flatten the canvass upon completion?? worrried about putting an hot iron on the work for fear it may melt!! whatever suggestions you may have I would appreciate. Thanks Neil (Toronto)
Hi Neil. I'm not 100% certain what you mean by humps. Can you send me a picture of what it looks like to paulthediyguy@gmail.com? I'll see if there's anything I can suggest to help.
Do you know how to make a pattern bigger or smaller than the original using the same plastic canvas count size. Example: say I have a pattern and when finished it is 20x20 holes but I want to make it 35x35 holes or 10x15 holes all using a 7 count plastic canvas. Is there a way to do this?
You can't really do that. You would have to re-design the pattern itself, as there's no way to "stretch" stitches. Think of it like a piece of graph paper. Each square represents a stitch. To change from 20x20 to 35x35 you have to figure out what goes in each extra area. Maybe the only exception would be if you wanted to exactly double the size, where a 20x20 became a 40x40. You could use a 2x2 area of stitches for every single stitch on the pattern, but even then, there's no guarantee that it would still look good.
So just a question. I have been just starting into plastic canvas and decied to make a MTG bag and plan on putting the swamp/black skulls on the sides was wondering what type of stitch would be best in covering the complete skull any help is great apprecaited
I've only ever used the diagonal stitches for plastic canvas. But if you're putting a pattern on a bag, and not plastic canvas, you may want to use cross stitch instead.
I found this free pattern of a 3d musical stocking ornament from www.freepatterns.com . Do any of you know how to make it not crooked when I stitch the back piece of the stocking to the long connector piece? I've made two of them now, but the longer top edges of the stocking were crooked looking on both when I finished them... Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!
I've had them for years, probably bought them at a Michaels, or other craft store. There's nothing special about them that makes them good for cutting plastic canvas though. They're just the pair of scissors I use. You can use any type of scissors you want.
No idea. I just used whatever I could find in the colour I needed. Just try to stay away from the super thin baby yarn.. doesn't fill up the gaps as well as the thicker stuff.
Honestly, not sure any more. Been awhile since I used any, and I always just grabbed whatever size I could find (typically only 1 size). I feel like it was 7ct, but I'm not 100% certain.
well, okay now i can do the blue parts of the box) and i still don't understand how to do those windows on TARDIS and the "Police Box" lettering. I have smth wrong with my hands)
Those you do over top of these types of stitches. Basically you start by putting the string in the back of the piece (just like you would do for the second section of the regular stitches) but instead of working on an angle, you come from behind at one side of the stitch, go as far as the pattern says and then bring it down from front to back so that there's a straight line on the front of your piece. Of course you can't go back up from the point you just went down (or it'll just come out), so when you start your second line, make sure that it's at a different corner than what you just came down with. I don't know if that will help or not, since it's hard to describe in words.. but hopefully it'll get you going in the right direction. If I get some free time I'll be sure to do up a quick video to show what I mean a bit better.
+Janice Auchter That really depends on the pattern. I don't have a specific technique I use. And I think it'd be easier to show how I handle it instead of trying to explain. So I think my next video I upload will be a more advanced plastic canvas techniques video :) Hopefully I'll be able to create that very soon!
Ahhh that pandemic in the background *^* That game urks me so but is so fun to play. ~Also you look very attractive without your beard ^_^ not saying you don't look attractive with your beard though.
This plastic canvas stitching seems like a very zen activity... doing something and becoming nothing while you do it... a form of meditation... am I making any sense? I think this is something that I need to do... time to head to Michaels.
I find it pretty relaxing. I don't know about Zen or not..since I enjoy listening to TV shows while I'm working. But there is also a sort of meditative quality to it. Same thing for cross-stitching.

Very informative video❤️❤️. Does this canvas have a back and front? Thanks for sharing the knowledge🙏🏻
Nope. Front and back are identical.

Yup. It always feels like Pandemic's trying to kill you :)
And thanks :)
This is a bit helpful as a beginner. But not so much because it's so blurry I can't quite fully see what you are doing. :/
SKIPPY!!

is it just me and my shitty internet, or is the camera out of focus... cos i cant tell one stitch from the next :-/
Yeah, not sure why, but my camera was having a crazy hard time focusing on the canvas.
Paul Mason well hopefully next time it does focus for ya. cos i'm loving all the stuff you do! so many things on the list to make now!
mm no entiendo:(
need to focus a bit better..:(
