Always loved Desmond’s playing but my favourite alto player of all time was Jimmy Dorsey. I’m in my late 70s and back in the 60s I played both alto and tenor in a stage band. (Still have my Selmer *80 alto mouthpiece) Being from Toronto and having seen Bickert live I was amazed at his casual gum chewing effortless style.
Back in the 70s a high school buddy of mine was an aspiring jazz pianist ( later signed by A&M ) who joined the musician’s union as soon as he could. Ed Bickert’s number was in the union directory, so he called him up to ask him if he’d accompany him on a gig for $50. Ed said sure. True story.
PAUL DESMOND EST ET SERA TOUJOURS LE ROI DE L'IMPROVISATION MÉLODIQUE, AVEC UN LIRYISME IMBATTABEL !!! MERCI POUR CELLE BELLE ET HISTORIQUE VIDEO !!! DE SALVADOR= BAHIA.
The Desmond's effortless way to play his alto was absolutely stunning and still remains today a kind of miracle. This November 25th, his birthday centennial deserves to be highly celebrated.
@@skippyhandleman1625Personally I always think of Lenny Breau in that role. Not only did he transcribe some of Evan’s music for guitar, latterly with his 7 string guitar he fashioned his harmonic concept around Evans’.
Ed Bickert continues to amaze with one tasty voicing after another after another. I could be wrong but I think this is the only footage of this ensemble.
I went to see him at George's in Toronto, and he didn't appear as he had to cut his tour short for health reasons. It wasn't long after that he died. I have many albums with Paul Desmond and Dave Brubeck plus others, and had really wanted to see him live, but alas..... One of the most musical players, regardless of instrument.
It is both incomprehensible and sad that this momentary piece of magic does not have 100 million views. Ty. Incredible. The date can be fairly accurately approximated by when seeing when Ed switched the stock telecaster neck pickup to his later used humbucker in the neck.
Stunning work from a man who left us too soon. His ability to create beauty, even in the first eight or nine notes of this piece, is astonishing. By the way, I am editing this about a week after my initial comment. I am just sitting here trying to do this on my clarinet and realize that thank God someone had the insight to record this.
Thank you for uploading this. I believe it was recorded in '76. What a shame that Desmond passed only a year later. This is probably one of my favourite configurations of his quartet. Bickert came highly recommended by Jim Hall, and justifiably so. Great tune too! :)
@@PepperWilliams_songcovers He wasn't bad as Jim Hall's sax player as well.... Paul Desmond always knew how to find incredible guitarists. Check out the Paul Desmond's The Complete 1975 Toronto Recordings for more Ed Bickert. And his saxophone player!

I'm a 75-year-old alto player and went to sleep last night with my phone on my chest playing a Desmond album. To me, he'll always be The Man....
Yes, my choice too, and with Ed ,Don and Jerry making up the rhythm section, it just doesn't get any better!
That’s what I do with this Toronto stuff nighty

@@Taylort3b wow thanks for sharing what’s your fav Jimmy Dorsey tune?
Beautiful song (one of my favourites), stellar players. Delicacy and elegance.
This is such a perfect performance of this lovely tune. Bickert and Desmond were born to play together. And Don Thompson is a wonderful bassist.

Good call 👍🏻 Marked it on my calendar. Desmond was a remarkable musician.
End of September and closing in.
Ed Bickert just nails it man....wow
Those chord voicings!!! And the sax player’s not bad!
Don Thompson is a BEAST.
@@victorwong9622 paul desmond actually was playing through lung cancer
He does indeed. Soooo tasteful.
Ed its one my favorites but dont forget Jim Hall
Honestly who needs a piano when you have Ed Bickert? And who needs to speak when you have Paul Desmond ?
Ed Bickert compliments Paul's playing so well. After hearing, it's so hard to imagine any other rythmn section. ❤
Only Ed Bickert can get those cool harmonies from a Fender.
I think of Ed Bickert as a Bill Evans of guitar.
How about imagining what Desmond would sound like with guitarist Jim Hall? ✨

Paul Desmond is in a class of his own! Great! Sweet!
That guitar chimes like a Fender Rhodes.

Paul Desmond is the best of trhe best, period. Bickert compliments Paul very well. Great.
Yes! Thanks for uploading this! Can't have enough Desmond in this world 😁
There is much, much too little. Who do we talk to about that?

Paul play's lovely creamy and dreamy alto sax😎
En écoutant Paul desmond on a vraiment impressionnant de vivre dans un monde merveilleux
I have the same reaction
So nice that Desmond collaborated with this trio of fine Canadian musicians, as all four compliment each others style and creativity.
Oh my god....softly and smooth...this I have on a live track from Paul Desmond Live
Listen to the guitar tune....softly and awesome

Maravillosa música de Jazz con Paul Desmond y Ed Bickert , tranquiliza y reconforta el alma
Thank you so-o much for posting this lovely performance. Paul's sax is sublime - gives chills! 🎶🎷💞
If CBC is the Canadian Broadcasting Company I am guessing it is at around the time of the live album that has Wendy as it's opening track
Goosebumps…..
I could listen to these guys all day!

Does anyone have a trasncriptrion of Ed's great playing on this tune? Francois Leduc offers many but not this one (yet).
