“I think I overeat because the food is there.” Brilliant and I totally agree. I so appreciate your leadership and work in setting this up. I really appreciate also what you said about remembering the hardship our families lived through. Our little wxperiment will help us with that. I forgot canʻt use regular onions!! Drat!!
I am sure people got hold of onions but it was much easier to get hold of salad onions, shallots, and leeks I think. I'd definitely use up your onions, waste not, want not! xxx C and thank you for your kind words xxxx C
plant that onion so they seed and grow so you always have onions. May I ask what books do you go by are they replicas that really came out during that time? I would love to get them also and do this diet. I don't like revised where they add there own twist, thats not original. in the 1940 house they were given rabbits for meat and chickens for eggs/meat, do you know anyone doing this diet that raise them?
Fascinating. My grandfather (great depression) told me when I was a kid that his mother would make him pick dandelions for their meals and so she could make wine. Anything helps.
I have found you late since you’ve put these videos out and finding them quite interesting. And thank you for doing this I can’t wait to see how it all ended up and if you made it through to the end.
Brilliant video Carolyn.... I'm not vegetarian or vegan but I don't eat much meat at all. As I have some ham to use up I thought I would give myself 3oz cheese rather than 4 and eat the ham up so it doesn't get wasted. I have had porridge for breakfast and an apple. I will be having an Oslo meal for lunch and something potato based for dinner. Really excited to join in as much as I can 😁 x
Wonderful video, I really enjoyed watching and learning. I’m going to try this starting on Monday. I’m really looking forward to following yours and everyone else’s journey.
Correct onions were either in the attic braided and hanging from the rafters or in a WOOD crate on the floor in an upstairs room/closet. Potatoes were in a wood crate with straw around it in the celler. The straw was to keep moisture away and keep from freezing. And fruit was not allowed near ANY VEGETABLE will cause both to spoil faster. ( unless in canning jars. )
mmm that golden treacle stuff is great, occasionally I find it in stores in the USA I think it should be more readily available. And we should adopt Branston because it’s amazing. I am a Pescatarian myself and I do understand ration eating is challenging but with the prices on meat lately, I am almost lucky not to be buying it probably folks during the war grew their own gardens often and so you could supplement this challenge I suppose with veggies
Hi there, yes a little Golden Syrup adds a lovely flavour for a sweet tooth person like myself!! haha! Love Branston Pickle too! Yes to the vegetables, people grew them everywhere during the war!! xxxx
I just found your site last week, and this is just brilliant. I am in the United States, but there is no less of a need here to eat more simply and save money! And maybe lose a few pounds in the process! I found your site thru research on different youtube channels that post recipes about the Great Depression era cooking. Again, simple foods to fill the belly during challenging times. Blessings!
Thank you so much! I think so many people are looking to cut back and spend and make do with less because of rising costs and possible shortages....xxxx I think many of us have similar mindsets, practical prepping xxxxx Thank you for leaving a comment Laurie xxx
I am excited to see how this goes, I may not be able to do this with you but I hope to incorporate some of these recipes into my family's diet! I have just started my dehydrating journey as well as getting back to canning. I find that if I have veg that is starting to go I dehydrate it and it is there for when I need it. Are you going to plant a victory garden as well?
Hi Cathy, that sounds great, hope we hear more about the dehydrating journey!! I have a herb garden this year and some potatoes but nothing else, I'm struggling with time as at the moment I have to give a lot of support to my youngest daughter beyond my day job but at least I have fresh herbs and a few spuds :0 xxxx
onions were not as hard to come by as you might think most greww onions carrots and beans of some sort in a garden so you could add a 1/2 pound to pound weekly of these fresh vegg and it would be legit
Yes indeed. The problem was that the UK imported most of its onions from Spain so when the imports were sporadic or rare due to the bombing of supply ships, for a year or two, getting hold of onions was quite difficult in many areas until people started to grow their own xxxx
@@1940sExperiment aw thanks so much for the response. I've always been interested in this topic. Really want to challenge myself to this way of eating. Good luck with your experiment! I'm so excited to see what you will make xx

My Nanna was vegetarian during the war. That allowed her to trade her meat and lard rations for extra points.

Thank you Donna xxx hope its going well xx
This is fantastic, but just one comment: the potatoes and avocados should NEVER be in fridge, and really onions shouldn't either.

I realise that meat was to the value of 1s.2d, but how much would that be equivalent to today's money?
Hi Rayne, its roughly around about £2.50 in UK money xxx
