Me and the boys always used to play this in a Free-for-all, but with some slight variation. Your could meld a wild card canasta which was worth 1000 points, but it had to be melded into a canasta straight away (no stacking). And whenever you had a red 3, and you'd lose a round, the 100 points would be deducted from your score instead of added. Also you weren't allowed to grab the discard pile until you already had placed a meld. Which would sometimes lead to this massive stack cards and everyone being scared shitless not to discard a card the next guy could meld.
Variant: This game can play with 2 to 3 players - The dealer deal 15 cards for each player (instead of 11 in team play) one card at a time. - Play like the original rule but the different is you draw 2 card (instead of 1 in team play) from the deck on your turn. - Each player will receive point base on their meld and hand. Goal variant: You can play up to 15k (some canasta variant has shown their rule in South America).
I had the same experience. I played as a child with my parents. Even though I forgot how to play, I realize that Canasta has influenced my memories of card playing. Wishing you many wonderful evenings playing Canasta.
I play this on my computer all the time, using Hoyle Card Games 2014 Edition. What annoys me about it is that the computer players will almost always tell me no if I ask to go out, because they prioritize melding the black 3's.
Heard it mentioned by Bing Crosby in a movie. Got impression it's like Pinochle. Doesn't sound much like Pinochle except use of word melds. And it's also a hard game to learn
"A frozen pile may only be picked up (unfrozen) if a player can meld the top card with two natural cards of the same rank from the player's hand." -Wikipedia
I don't know if it is the same game, but in Brazil (at least in the region where I live in) we have a very similar game, but we cal it canastRa and our melds are sequences from one Ace to another (A - 2 - 3... Q - K - A) instead of cards of the same ranks. I don't you of I was able to explain it correctly...
Some things I still not clear about the rule from this game is when the discard pile is frozen or blocked. If the discard pile is frozen, we cannot draw from discard pile if we can't make a natural meld with a card from discard pile. So, if the discard pile is blocked, still we can draw from discard pile unless we make a mixed meld with a card from discard pile? (for example the top card from discard pile is 5 of spades, then I make a meld consist 5 of spades from discard pile, 5 of clubs from my hand and a Joker or 2)
Not bad, but there's some changes for Canasta: -With 2-4 players, it also playable with 6 Jokers(not only with 4). -With 5-6 players, needs 3 decks(plus with 6/9 Jokers. --The amount of Jokers depends on the type of the decks(For example: If you use 2/3 USPC decks, it has 4/6 Jokers. If you use 2/3 Cartamundi or Piatnik decks, it has 6/9 Jokers). -0:45 In some versions, it deals 12, 13, 14, or 15 cards to all players.
Nice tutorial. Having studied the classic rules, i would like to suggest a few improvements. First the rule about valid melds: the classis rule states that a meld must contain at least two natural cards and not more then three wildcards. So 9-9-2-2-2 is a valid meld (by the way the only kind of meld that may contain more wilds then naturals). Second: if a red three is flipped over as the first upcard, the discard pile is frozen. Third: if the first upcard is a black three, there is no obligation to flip over another card (this only applies to wildcards and red threes).
Ok question: the rule about taking the discard pile is that you cannot take it unless you can start or add to a meld with the TOP card, correct? My boyfriend is arguing that you can take the discard pile if you know that a card underneath the top card would complete the meld. So for instance, if the top card was a 9 and I have one 9 in my hand, and I know that there was another 9 discarded previously, then I could take the pile making a meld of three 9s. Is this correct?
Not according to the rules, as I understand it. anytime the discard pile is taken, it has to be a natural meld. or you have a meld of that already laid down.
Hello. What's the rule around adding to an existing meld? Do you need another meld of min 2 natural cards + 1 or 2 wild cards to add to an existing tabled meld? Or can you add a single card? In this game it looks like you added a single card to existing melds.. thanks, Jack
@Hollywould thanks mate. I was getting stuck playing because wasn't sure if I could add a single card to existing meld. The rules I have say that a meld is minimum 2 natural cards and NOT more than 2 wild cards. So I guess that would be 5 natural cards and 2 wild cards to make a mixed canasta! Cheers!
As long as it's the top card. When going down you can only use the cards in your hand and the top card in the discard pile. (You can add other discarded cards to the meld but they can't count toward the point requirement.)
+Shyloh Chavez A player is not allowed to meld his/her final cards without a canasta. The player will have to discard without melding in order to still have cards.
If a pile is frozen with a wild card and a king has been discarded on top by the next player and then it is my turn. My meld is at 50 points. I have not drawn any cards from the draw pile. Can I pick up the discard pile after I have placed two kings and a wild from my hand down, for total meld of 70 points?
Are there any card games where 2 players each use their own deck of cards against the other player? I'm thinking of something where it's a heads up style game with your own piles. I am asking if this style exists to keep the piles separate. each player doesn't touch the other players cards. Thanks.

I'm Vietnamese, and I've played so many card games that build melds like Phỏm so this is easy to understand
Thanks for the upload. I now know how to play canasta in a good way. One of the best card games in my opinion.
Great explanation. İ play slightly different rules where you need two melds to finish, eg 2 Clean or a Clean and a Dirty.
very nice explanation for such game with full of rules and exceptional cards. We play this game much different here in India.
How do you play it then?
It's very similar to two games we play a lot here in Brazil: Buraco and Tranca.
Excellent description!
