the copper dissolved into the silver because it alloyed with the silver. its all about eutectics...I once was trying to use a 14kyg bezel on a silver back. I was using silver solder with it and I was never able to get the solder to flow but the gold bezel sank through the silver back, like as if it was a ghost that sank through a floor. the Bezel came all the way through the silver, intact...for the future, use gold solder when trying to marry gold and silver...
