Kunzite Mining at the Oceanview Mine, Part 2 by GIA. This video offers a glimpse into the Oceanview Mine in San Diego, Californian, which is 600 feet from the surface. Jeff Swanger continues his in-depth account of mining for gems at the Oceanview Kunzite Mine that he discovered and started mining kunzite gemstone from. He also speaks frankly about the formidable challenges that miners face with depths below 600 feet, such as ventilation and addresses questions regarding the mine’s discovery and various mining processes. Viewers may be intrigued by Swanger’s detailed yet concise explanation of the length of time it takes to clear a pocket of kunzite, as well as several other interesting facts about kunzite crystals, and the overall profitability of the Oceanview Mine.

The Oceanview Mine is a pretty cool place to visit. They have some buckets that tourists can screen to find some little pieces (I've got a few gem quality spodumenes from one such bucket). I've also found a gem quality rose beryl from the mine. If you're in the San Diego area, the drive out to the mine is worth it.

@@huskyfluffy Yeah, it's open to the public. I'm going there for vacation really soon, and am super excited. I think I already caught gem fever! LOL XD
It'll be my first time gem hunting, and I hope to find some kunzite myself. But there is also tourmaline, aquamarine, morganite, garnet, and quartz that you can find in these areas.
Also there are several locations in the U.S. that have open to the public mines where people can dig and hunt for gems and other precious metals and minerals. All depends on what you're interested in finding. Like New Mexico has place where you can find geos or gem eggs. In Arkansa has a farm field where diamonds are found. And yeah, it's a literal farm field where a farmer discovered diamonds and turned it into a tourist attraction.
And most these places is keep what you find, just pay the fee to visit. You might pay something like only $60-$80 something dollars at these places, but you can come home with a 15 carat gem worth $5000 or even $50,000! And such things have happened before.

Just curious as I'm learning about these gems, IF that crystal turns from Green to Pink in the sunlight, does that mean it is a Hiddenite and becomes a Kunzite..?
I absolutely LOVE Kunzite, but it is very very expensive here in Australia

He already said in the video that even though it’s green it’s not Hiddenite

If Cali is producing gem quality kunzite, then why is so much kunzite sourced from Pakistan and Afghanistan?
