  • Krzysztof Meyer (b. 1943) (Poland)
Symphony in D in the Style of Mozart (1977)
    Dir : Jozef Radwan
    1- Adagio - Allegro (8.16)
    2- Andante con moto (9.27)
    3- Tempo di menuetto (4.29)
    4- Finale : Allegro (4.52)
The premiere of this work took place on 1st April 1977 in Poznan. Apparently, apart from the conductor (Renard Czajkowski) and the announcer, nobody knew it was not a Mozart symphony (even the musicians!). It’s only after the performance of the work that it has been revealed it was the work of Krzysztof Meyer.
In this recording, the symphony is performed by the Polish Radio Orchestra of Krakow under the baton of Jozef Radwan.

Very good, I hear little bits that are taken straight from his works and other bits that sounds like music he might have composed if he had lived longer, very entertaining.

Love when 20th and 21st-century composers exercise their tonal craft by writing period pieces (works "in the style of"). It seems to me the value of such works goes beyond the "educational, academic." It's also a means of "re-imagining," of re-composing the music of previous composers. It's very likely a difficult thing to accomplish well ! Wonderful Symphony !!!!

The one Mozartean trait this symphony completely lacks is catchiness. Except maybe for the opening gesture of the first allegro, I heard not a single sonic event that I could recall three bars later...

if Mozart had not died in 1791 what would he have written after Jupiter-Symphony? ;-)
