      cool and congrats. definitely taking her advise. I have no credit and want to build credit fast. I opened a secured credit card and want my utilization to be excellent. I'm sticking between 0-9%..don't care what anyone says different.

      renee p I just opened up a secured credit card I only put $250 on it so I should only spend a little less than $25 on it month to keep my utilization good?

    Awesome video and great information. I would like to add that if you pay off your card 3 days before the due date and don't use it for 3 after the due date, they report it as 0% utilization. The 3rd day after the due date is usually when they report. So you can max out your card every month as long as you pay it off 3 days before due date and don't touch it for a week. Your credit score will continuously go up and you will be approved for higher limits faster.

      So what you're saying is pay off the amount owe 3 days before the due date and don't use it for the next 3 after the due date?

      Austin Harris that's brilliant I didn't know that

    • @CALDAMN
      @CALDAMN 7 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      yeah, but I thought 0% utilization is not good because it means that you're not using your credit card and not using your credit card at all doesn't improve your credit score. Am I right?

    This was very informative and simple to get! I finally decided to FULLY understand how credit scores work so I can utilize certain benefits of having a credit card and you got straight to the point! No chalk boards with a bunch of scribble scrabble and confusion like some other videos I've seen lol. I have a better comprehension now and will watch more to learn. Keep doing these vids and thanks!

    thanks! simple enough to be quickly understood and detailed enough to be helpful.

  • @Eljanny
    @Eljanny 9 ปีที่แล้ว +107

    Great advice! But one thing you forgot to mention was that if you do need to make a pretty big purchase like you mentioned which will put you over the "0- 9%" you can still go ahead and make it as long as you pay it off right away or pay off enough to keep it below the 10% before the statement closes. Ex: $500 Credit limit. Buy item worth $400 puts you at 80% but then you pay $355 for it and let the statement close.. you'll b left with $45 bringing you down to 9%. Because the percentage that's reported is the amount in your statement. Then pay it off when you get it and rinse and repeat :D

    • @missbehelpful
      @missbehelpful  9 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Eljanny True. Thanks for pointing this out :) Although, If you have the cash to pay it right away I don't think you would need to charge it on a credit card, but I guess if you have a student loan check coming or a paycheck coming in a few days and you really need something in the meantime - then this is a good tip to fall back on.

    • @Eljanny
      @Eljanny 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +MissBeHelpful That's very true and that's where credit cards come in handy :D. Though i'd still go ahead and put certain transactions on my CC mainly for rewards that my CC has and many others do so too either cash back, points, traveling etc... (which you should make a video about :) ).

    • @wiseman4256
      @wiseman4256 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +MissBeHelpful so is Eljanny right about if you use more than 10% but then make large payment before bill statement, and then owe only 8% of your limit on bill statement, then that's what will be reported? Because this video makes its sound like if your at 80% of your limit ever, even for just one hour from paying for hotel ect your in trouble?

    • @buildingwithjosue
      @buildingwithjosue 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      +wise man the banks do not report to credit bureaus every hour, they report once a month. So yes, Eljanny is correct and so is MissBeHelpfull. Some people just prefer to take advantage of those rewards that certain cc offer. Just remember that if you are going to hit the card with a high balance, pay it off to where you are at a 10% again before the bank reports to the credit bureaus. Hope this answers your question.

    • @wiseman4256
      @wiseman4256 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks! good to hear i'm on the right track.7% or less on the first bill statement is best.heard 1% is perfect percentage.Of course paying your balance in full one day after first bill statement will stop someone from having to pay any interest.Rinse and repeat every month.And owing small amount on the first bill statement is best for your credit score.Not paying interest is best for your credit score.Owing nothing on any of your bill statement is bad for your credit score.

    Great vid! I agree! Very informative, clear and concise information. You're definitely one of the major players in regards to anything credit related. Credit Utilization (which is 30%) is one of the 2 major categories (payment history which 35%) that make up a huge part of our credit score.
    I've experimented with different credit utilization percentage and that was probably the first time I noticed the biggest jump in my credit score. Thanks for always providing great content.

    Great vid! Im an old person who has been working diligently on my score for about 4 years.I went from around 530 to 690. After my score passed 670 or so, I got offered credit cards-good ones! 0 interest for 18 months etc. I paid off my house and began to remodel...and promptly maxed them all out. :) 3months passed, and when I checked my score I was horrified to see it had dropped 111 points! I had no idea how much utilization mattered AND that there were levels. Thank you!

    Thanks for being Informative! So does it hurt your credit if you pay what you spend before the statement closing day or is it better to wait to pay the full amount on the day of statement closing?

    • @missbehelpful
      @missbehelpful  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't hurt your credit to pay early but you want to at least leave a little balance there for the credit card issuer to report to the credit bureaus. Call your card company and find out when they report the balances to the bureaus for your card and then you can make sure to pay it down to 10% by that date and then pay the rest off before the due date. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      Cut the cards up and pay cash for everything.

    • @pinky1933
      @pinky1933 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +awakeminds That will get you nowhere. Kids can pay cash you just break you piggy bank run to the corner store. I know people with 6 figure incomes (yes I am jealous but I am still in school myself) but they use credit cards. Credit cards simply because if you are going to pay 5k for a vacation to the Bahamas, use the credit card to earn 2% cash back. When you get home, after all the transactions clear, pay it off in full from your regular checking. Then you are the one getting paid to spend your own money. You use your debit card and you spend the same 5k and get nothing in return. I have a shit ass security job yet I have just under 7k in combined credit availability. I am responsible enough to use them for what I need until I get my degree. Then I can loosen up a bit. Paying cash is a sure way to keep you out of debt because you only spend what you have, but responsible credit card users spend only what they know they can afford. Like the video says, pay your bills, raise your credit.

    • @awakeminds
      @awakeminds 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    My credit limit is very high ($6,500) with a low interest rate (8.24%). I use it to charge my textbooks, and then I pay off my credit card bill in full with the money I've saved up for upcoming textbooks. You can negotiate with creditors for a higher cash limit and lower interest rate. If you have great credit, you can ask for a higher cash limit or a lower interest rate, and they'll pretty much always give it to you, especially if your credit card is with a credit union bank. And, if you're between the ages of 18-35, in college, and female, you are seen as a statistically error if you have phenomenal credit. Creditors will love you.

Its super helpful for forgetful people like myself. I do this for my phone and credit card.

    This is false. You do not and I repeat do not have to limit yourself to using a fraction of your credit limit per month as described in this video. You have a $500 limit and you're only going to charge $46 all month? Does that seem reasonable to you? Your utilization only needs to be at that small fraction on your limit on the close date of your card. That's right only ONE day per month dies your balance need to fall within the 0 to 29% range as described in this video. I use my card for everything all month. I make multiple payments to pay it down and off by my due date. I'm only limited to the small balance described in this video from the day after my due date to my close dates. For me that's the 22nd through the 26th of the month. My statement closes on the 27th. Whatever balance I have on this date is the balance that is reported to the credit bureaus. This and ONLY this ONE day. You can use ALL your credit ALL month long except during this period. This video is false.

    • @StraidGaming
      @StraidGaming 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Faye Sikora So could you help me out to understand this? So I just recently got a capital one card and got a $300 limit, my due date for my payment is on the 27th of this month, so what you are saying is that I have to pay off a certain amount right before the 27th to get to the "excellent" range she was talking about so that way on the 27th it shows as I only used a small percentage? So then basically my utilization is reported to the agencies ONLY on the 27th in my case?

    • @fayesikora3433
      @fayesikora3433 8 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      JoKeRR Ogie you want to pay your card off by or on your due date to avoid interest charges. You need to have ideally 10% but no more that 30% of you limit charged to your card on your cards closing date. Your balance is only reported on your closing date. So that means there are two dates you need to be aware of on your card. Your payment due date and the statement close date. Both are on your bill but you can call the issuer and ask if you don't see it. The day after your due date until your statement close date is the period during which you need to keep your balance between 10-30%. For example, my payment due date is the 21st. I make sure my balance is 0 on the 21st having made the number of payments I need to to pay it off so I don't get charged any interest. My statement close date is the 27th so between the 22nd and the 27th I don't charge more in that 10% of my limit. Then on the 28th through the next month I use as much of my limit as I need to and make the payments I need to get it paid off again by the 21st. I use my card to do everything then I use my cash to pay off my card. I maximizes my funds and earns me points I can use towards airfare and cash back.

      I appreciate you clarifying this because I wondered if what this video was teaching was correct. My due date for each of my cards are the 20th and the 23rd. I also make several payments throughout the month to ensure that by the due date, my cards have 0 balance. I don't know when the statement closings are but I will find out and use this method. Thanks again!
