legioners were originally recruited in switzerland and at that time the swiss marched at 1/2 cadence then regular troops maybe it had something to do with going up and down the mountains. anyway out of tradition the legion continues to march at that cadence and as a result they are always last in any parade.
Hi aramificate, in answer to your question, I believe these are the Men of the engineers Corps. Most of the guys in this section are allowed to grow full beards if they want to.
to aramificate ref legioners with aprons. it goes back to the 18th century each company had a pioneer who was expected to march at the head of the regiment and clear the way for those who followed. they carried axes to cut trees and wore aprons to protect their uniforms and they were permitted to wear bears as in warfare their task was considered more arduous. many of them became qualified carpenters.
@julien0540 I beleive that the reason for the 88 steps per minutes is for adaptation for extended marches in desert condition...such as walking long distance on sand.
French Foreign Legion was created in 1831 by the king of France. The first legionaries was recruited in Paris, they was european foreign refugees in Paris, and some criminals. Their cadence isn't 1/2 of the regular troops. They march at 88 steps/minute, the rythm of the french monarchic troops. They have conserved this tradition. The republican troops march at 122 steps per minute. Legionaries were never recruited from swiss. Created by french king and always recruited in France.
Danke sehr, Ralf
