Hi Max. Love the video! Ihave owned an FT-891 since April 2020 and I love it! You can adjust the NB setting by accessing menu numbers 05-01, 05-02 and 05-03. 05-01: NB WIDTH 05-02: NB REJECTION 05-03: NB LEVEL. Just play around with those until you get the settings you like. A full explanation is in the Advanced Operations Manual available as a free download (PDF) from the Yaesu website. The manual that comes with the radio is really just basic stuff and seems more keyed to the CW operator.
Thanks, Yes. All good useful info. I have the extended manual. I have this little-big Radio set up well. Excellent Audio Reports without asking etc. Cheers
I have variable voltage power supplies on the house current. I set mine to 14.50-51 volts. That front plate mic socket has a switch on the backside of the faceplate too so you can get mono speaker or two speakers that are the same mono sided speaker jack option as well. If you go into one menu a lot you can go to that function and then hit another button on the bottom row and lock it onto that function so anytime you want to go to that functions it automatically goes there so you can change it quicker skipping a function key. You can thank surface mount components on the circuit boards to help make the radio smaller and just as functionable. Still a nice video I learned some stuff that I can use for setting mine up when it gets here.
I have one in my Toyota and love it. In the USA the 11 meter band is CB and ham radios will not transmit on that band without the MARS mod. I had the MARS mod done on my 991A when I purchased it and I wish I had done so on the 891 as well.
It is a great wee box. Watch my recent Videos on it to see how I have it installed in my Jag. It serves it purpose well. In my opinion all HF's should be opened for general coverage TX , for most it is just a diode snip, some a wire snip and some top of range rigs it is only a menu job. Why not? Cheers
That’s a cracking wee radio, the receiver and filtering is amazing.Having to go into menus to change things is normal for radios of that size so personally I don’t think it’s a hassle.
There is an alternative fast way to go to LSB ! Program memories to a few of your fav bands /frequency/ mode (USB and LSB/FM /CW etc . Use the memories as VFO . So lets say you are on mem 1 ; 27.405 FM you can simply turn the vfo to move up or down. You can have channel 2 : on 27.555 USB and again tune up and down. If you want to go to 27.315 LSB . You can have 27.500 LSB preprogrammed in channel 8 . You simply go to channel 8 then turn to VFO to 27.315 LSB . I have that system in my icom 7300 and 7200 it works on the ft891 in a similar fashion. I preprogrammed my rig with a few channels on medium wave all the way up to 4metre with various frequency and mode on each band using the memories as 100 different VFO channels. Just move the memory to the channel that is on the band and mode you want ,then adjust the VFO and you are spot on . Once you set up a few memories fav frequency and mode you will never need VFO A/B again ? EG : channel 1; 693AM channel 2; 1.830cw , channel 3 1.920 LSB ,channel 4; 1.957 LBS , channel 5; 1.977AM ,channel 6 ; 3.560 cw ,channel 7; 3.760 LSB , and so on **** channel 60 ; 26.965 USB , channel 61 : 27.315 FM , channel 62 ;27.315 USB . Channel 63 : 27.7812 FM etc . You get the idea . Have a go with setting up 20 or so favourite frequency and mode ,you might find this is a useful shortcut?
Thanks for the detailed info, you probably just sold me on an ft891, I was set on buying one but that difficult band switching method put me off, I was sure there must of been s simpler way and hearing yours workaround has deffo made my mind up for me, cheers 👍
green led this changes the function of the outer knob from RF Gain to Squelch. RF Gain, along with IPO and ATT, all directly affect the receiver gain. your radio is in squelch. not sure your a ham or nor but your not fully understanding the radio controls and what the functions actually do. bit of homework and you'll discover how the radio should work.
Thanks. Yes, tried alot of stuff at home for first 2 months before installing in my cars and now have it exactly as I want it. I am aware of all you say but for FreeBanding it is at it's best for me. Cheers
Alright Max hope all is well i just picked one of these up thanks for the video , not been on the rig for over 25yrs , i take it you done the mars mod ? All the best Willliam Scotland
Use the jack in the side of the control head. Also make sure the dip switch on the rear of the control head is on PH not SP. congratulations you now have stereo headphones
The mode question has been mentioned max on various forums what I do to get round it max and to avoid going into menue I add the freq and lsb mode into quick memory you can activate or deactivate in seconds rather than going the long winded way round to change mode
Great video, which led me to order the 891, the shop has also expanded it for me, it’s arriving today and can’t wait for it to arrive, one thing I would like to ask you is, do you use the compression feature and have the tx audio equaliser switched on and setup to your own personal settings, and have you done any other videos on these or other settings, as I would like to watch this, thanks in advance 73
Thanks. I have a few Videos now with the FT891 being my mobile unit in one of my cars. Nowadays I have a Technofix mic on it and so changed the settings accordingly. I do use the Comp on it. The Audio (TX) settings would very much depend on situation... The room/vehicle... Your voice... The type of mic... if there is a linear amp in use or not... + many other factors which is why I haven't done a Video on exact settings as this would therefore be irrelevant to most folks. When I bought it I used it (switched) at home next to my FT450D and both radios were set up for TX Audio using Marshall Noise-Cancelling headphones and thus nailed. I get Audio reports/compliments without asking. Check out my more recent Moxon Videos with my Jaguar and maybe you will pick up a few hints there. Many thanks for that, worthy of a full response. Enjoy your new "toy" Take care Cheers
MD-100 plugs straight in but I found the standard MH-31 mic had better quality audio when the menus are fully used to "tune" the TX. I am OK with this as ultimately my FT891 is for static-mobile use. Thanks again 73's
This was done when I bought it. If you are handy enough in-the-back-of-a-box then there are plenty how-to videos on TH-cam. If not some radio shops/repairers can do it fairly cheap although worth noting that to go General Coverage TX can void any warranty. Cheers
It can warm up a bit but for me not excessively. The fan keeps it cool and you can also set it up in menus from normal to contest mode where the fan comes on more aggressively. I haven't tried this as I haven't felt the need. It is a fantastic little rig for mobile once you have played with it a bit and got used to it. Very few folks if any say anything really bad about the FT891. Cheers
I bought one specifically for the car. Tired of busting ass and never having anything to show for it. I bought the ATAS120 Antenna as well and it’s an unbelievable combination. Buy it…just BUY it !
@@anonyninja7737 OK, never really bothered me, but can you suggest another option when spending a good few hundred bucks on a piece of kit that should be fully capable of achieving what it was bought for? (SWL & FreeBand). Thanks for the info. Some may be unaware. Cheers
