Thanks for watching as always! And the comments. I should add With the Pentacon Six the mirror is only down when the camera is in advanced position. If it is not advanced the mirror stays up and the curtain is exposed behind the lens. When I left the camera on top of my bag and not advanced the lens (with no cap on) was pointing up to the sun which burned the pinhole into the curtain. (Like a magnifying glass on paper). It's common on Leica and Fed cameras. If you have a Pentacon Six just be wary of this. Maybe a good practice is to advance the camera after each exposure so the mirror comes down and protects the curtain. Something I will be doing from now on. I hope my error has helped others. ❤
I have a Cycle Poco camera built around 1900. I was intrigued by the "Cycle" in the name, so I did a little research. It turns out that cycling and photography became popular at about the same time. Many early portable cameras were marketed with "Cycle" in the name, intended to be used exactly the way you did in this video. So, looks like cycling and photography have been a "thing" for over 130 years. Love the videos!
The farm implement at 11:13 is a field cultivator. The front teeth are "sweeps" and the springs are a safety mechanism. If the sweeps hook something in the ground, like a rock or root, they fold up and back and the springs reset them. The sweeps come in many different shapes and sizes depending on your soil. The discs behind them basically just even out the furrows they leave. The two things in the back are "rolling basket" cultivators. (You folks across the pond probably have other names for all of this.) This is used for final preparation so that the soil will be ready for planting. There you have it - more useless farming trivia than you probably needed, or even wanted.
I did that with my flash in Africa (equatorial sun in Kenya). I was using a Fresnel lens on the flash unit (Better Beamer) and had the flash lying on the floor of the Land Rover facing upward. It melted the face of my flash unit, though it still works fine. The plastic sleeve that you keep the Fresnel lens in says all over it not to point it at the sun!
I haven't watched the whole video yet or read any other comments, but I'm guessing you burned a hole in the shutter curtain from the sunlight. These cameras don't have quick return mirrors so there is nothing protecting the shutter curtain from sunlight if the lens cap is off.
Great video Roger! I’ve heard of holes getting burned in cloth shutters but have never actually seen it. I will be more careful with my cloth shutter cameras. I’m glad you were able to easily fix it. P.S. I always get a smile from your videos.
Thanks Tom! Appreciate the kind words. With that camera the mirror stays up if it's not advanced. Not everyone will know that. Hopefully the video will stop more burning out.
You’ll have a super strong thumb after a day of using the Pentacon 6, Rog, as there’s a lot of resistance to get over, to pull the film winder fully over to the next frame. That camera is built like a beast and an absolute beast to shoot!
On those cameras like the Kiev 60, pointing the lens towards the sun without having the mirror down is a sure way to burn a nice hole in the cloth shutter. Now, the camera is sure to be due for a full service!
It was the last thing on my mind when thinking how as I usually have the cap on. But the only reason I could logically think of. Then I saw the curtain.
A common problem with all curtain shutter cameras. That's why a SLR camera should always be cocked immediately after shooting in order to let the mirror protect the curtain.
If you can't get the shutter curtain replaced, you can use some liquid rubber to patch it. You will have to redo it eventually. I have s Zorki with the same issue 😀
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss It can look messy indeed. But if you apply the rubber carefully with no excess using a fine brush and leave it to dry ( or maybe cure?) before moving the shutter curtains, you will be fine. Also take note of the way the curtains are wound up on the mechanism. To reduce the possible stresses on the rest of the cloth (and maybe changing the speed of the shutter) the patch should be parallel to the roller they wind around. I had some experience with my Fed 2 camera a couple of years ago. It still works as "new" with no signs of further deterioration. edit: I should have finished the video before comenting🙃
Range finders are prone to this problem, many of my purchases had pinprick holes, for those I find a fabric felt pen can be used to fill them in and return the camera to useable again. I note that your shutter had a hole larger than the fix I mentioned above would most likely not been sufficient.
Try an e-bike and some padded cycling shorts also you may be able to recharge your GoPro from it. It takes about 4 weeks to get your bottom broken in for cycling. I use an e-bike and a motorbike you can stop anywhere on them. keep up the great work. The funny thing is the only time I was in the Isle of Wight was when I cycled there from Hull when I was 14 years old by myself I then went on to Lands End.
Cloth shutter curtains and direct sunlight shining through the lens is a no no. All those guys with Leica M film cameras also take note. If the hole is not huge, it may be possible to repair it.
Yeah it was a bummer lensman! I've patched it up and so far so good! I'll just keep my eye on it each time I shoot make sure it's not a loose patch. It shouldn't come loose but I don't fancy that getting into the rollers.
The cloth shutters on those cameras are really thin and fragile. I tried fixing mine with some liquid rubber paint, and it sort if worked, but now two of the shutter speeds are gone😆 Tricky cameras!
Wow..Glad to see the Pentagon 6 is still alive and well. I had one about 50 years ago with the 180 f2.8. Fantastic lens and shot local soccer and rugby on it. Always an great option in the day. Did you know one of the cheap tricks with 35mm gear in those days was to get great Pentax lenses (standard 42mm thread ) and put them on a Praktica L body. A super little camera with a metal vertical plane shutter which also gave a flash sinc. of 125 iirc. Really enjoyed your video..many thanks for the walk down my memory lane.
Anyone with a barnack Leica knows you don't leave your camera pointed at the sun without a lens cap on or you will burn a hole in your shutter curtain.
yep 4:25 you did not transport the flim and the mirror stayed up so your lens projected the sun in the shutter and burned it ...... Bay the way I'am Dutch and almost born on a fiets (bike) So I made a photography dadicated city bike and use it for allmost 30 years . Not the same bike of coarse last year I have a new bike with a low frame . I'am now allmost 68 and still love my bike .
Exactly that reason! A lesson learned here. Advance the camera after each shot so the mirror comes down to protect the curtain! Nice to hear you are active on your bike I can imagine you have some wonderful photographs 👍
Your copy of the lens is an older version (it is also the one with torium in it) I have got the black finish one and it’s pin sharp at f2.8, I don’t see any edge softness.
You can buy silk curtain cloth (for cameras) online, or... you could buy an old wrecked cloth curtain camera and cut the cloth out. And a bit of fabric glue. Others use liquid rubber to paint over the holes.
Don't you just love it when people see you off your bike and think they need to dial 999 just incase you think your gonna die or something? BTW, is the Pentagon 6 the camera used in the Sister Boniface Mysteries? It kind of looks the same. Great video!

You have hit the nail right on the head there Russell. Only yesterday my right knee started to hurt really bad! So bad now I can't put pressure on it getting up from a seated position! I shall let it rest but it did make me research seat position. So thank you for your observation. Appreciate it.
I think most know that burning a hold in the shutter curtain is a thing with Leica rangefinders, as there is no mirror to protect the shutter curtain. But with your Pentacon, isn't that an SLR? And shouldn't the mirror protect the shutter curtain? And even if the mirror was in the up position. wouldn't the sun burn a hold dead center of the shutter curtain? It seems that the hole is off-center. Nice video though. I enjoy all of yours. Steve (New York).
Yes very common on Leica. It is an SLR Steve. But the mirror on that camera is UP until you advance the camera. And I guess it depends on the angle of the lens in relation to the sun.
The hole will be burned in the location on the shutter where the sun would appear on the negative (its position in the field of view). The lens is basically focusing an image on the shutter curtain instead of on the film. The position of the sun in the frame is the spot where a hole will be burned.
