    I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that 00 was partially written as a response to what was going on in the middle east since it was written during the height of the war on terror. This is why the show deals with a lot themes much closer to the real world, like peace through violene, interventionism, and energy concerns. It was the first Gundam show I really watched back when it aired in the SciFi channel when they had an anime block. I loved it and was really the first tv show in general that I actually paid attention to the story.

      One can see the influence in the plot. Energy wars waged primarily in the Middle East, three major houses battling for control of energy and space (the solar rings and space elevators) - easy to be replaced with America, China, Russia, if one wants to - and the very first episode: "We fight this war in the name of 'god'". Don't get me wrong. I am a believer in Jesus Christ. But the idea of some "god" who demands the death of those who do not believe in him/ her/ it, is just alien to me. I know it is a thing, I was told that I needed to die for refusing to change to worshiping a guy's god, but that is not the God I worship.

    Well lets say that season 2 will be more character driven. But I'm just a 00 fan boy who loves it.
    Most of the disparity in my mind comes from the lack of Technology, the three superpowers are fighting with muskets when Celestial being has automatic rifles and better body armour. Once the GN-X rolls around the technology hurdle is overcome and the Gundams are tested.
    The movie shows some thing that no other Gundam series to date has: "Mother fucking aliens!"

      Well I think 00 does a lot for the series as a whole, I feel it really embodies the spirit of what a Gundam (XD Setsuna). It follows different point paths that other Gundam haven't done and I love that about the series. And you're right the movie does so much amazing thing with the build up of what Gundam 00 is. The Human race need to stop fighting against each other to actually deal with greater issues such as an example with the state of our world right now. It's amazing.

  • @AntoineVello
    @AntoineVello 4 ปีที่แล้ว +101

    00 is my favourite and IMO the gundams being these overpowered destruction machines has to be the case for what the show is trying to accomplish.
    People will go to war. Stopping war is an ordeal. You can't be slightly better than someone if your goal is to stop all war.
    People lose battles every day. People have Pyrrhic victories every day. Both sides of a battle are not ever put in a situation where someone comes and slaughters both of them and the governments running them are told "Stop going to war and you will stop losing millions if not billions of dollars,"
    Celestial Being can't have mobile suits that are just slightly better because that won't suffice. A slightly better robot than yours can be pressured and can be beat, this means you can still go to war with it. But a suit so much better than yours standing on your neck and saying "*I* will let you up when you promise to stop going to war, and not a moment sooner," that forces you to make a hard choice. It makes the choice to face Celestial Being suicide and the government's choice to throw away lives and money and get just get voted out by someone saying "We've lost too much fighting Celestial Being, let's not," While this doesn't happen in the anime, it's the intent behind fighting anyone going to war with great overwhelming force.
    The options have to be death or failure and that's what will stop war. Not people understanding each other, the understanding that if you go to war you will be spanked, humiliated and fail.

    • @barrybend7189

    I think the worst offender in term of initial invulnerability is Wing and the worst offender in end-time invulnerability probably SEED... though newtype piloted psychoframe machines of the UC (like the Unicorn) are also guilty of this.
    In 00 in the beginning Gundams massively outperform anything else, but can be overcome with enough effort. You either need a super-talented pilot (like Ali Al Saaches) or a whole load of lesser units (like the HRL attack on the Ptolemy and especially the desert engagement where they needed to be saved by the Trinities), but it CAN work.
    And once the other factions get their hands on GN tech, it's a far more even playingfield.
    In SEED the suits are only semi-invulnerable on a timer, but run out of energy at some plot... I mean point. That is until they bring in the nuclear-powered suits and ruin the whole dynamic... also the rules of when certain weapons can penetrate active and charged phase shift armour are... shifting as the plot demands. Sometimes beam-sabers cut right through PSA, sometimes they glance off without damaging the suit.
    In Wing the suits start out literally invulnerable. Even shooting a Gundam for hours with regular guns will do nothing more than give the pilot a headache from the shacking and clangs. And once beam-weapons become widely used... which are for the most part used on AI controlled suits that are inferior to Human pilots, thus leaving the feeling of threat to the "hero-mech" duels.
    Out of the three series, I'd say 00 handled it best... if you ignore the movie. The movie is really different beast and I can see why some people like it and many do not. Though the way the movie start off was a brilliant idea in my opinion, which I wouldn't spoilt for the world. :D
    One thing that I found a refreshing change compared to other Gundam series though is that 00 didn't retread the usual "Earth vs. Colonies" foundation to the story that pretty much every Gundam series is based off of.
    I also like how there are far more factions. Apart from the usual setup of two major factions, plus the hero-faction and occasionally a neutral kingdom (like Orb), 00 has three major factions and multiple smaller ones like Caylon and the middle-eastern countries..
    In those two regards 00 really breaks the mold that all the previous Gundam series have made.

    • @jamavra
      @jamavra 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Agree with this, they introduced a lot of different things to the franchise. The team aesthetic of CB and the tactical strategy they employ for every battle highlights their superiority. The suits in S1 are all the same central powered GN drive suits with different abilities that compliment each other. By S2 the suits evolve to be more adaptable to all kinds of combat... You see the Raiser, Archer Arios, Seravee and Seraphim, even Cherudim and moving shields.
      They also lost a lot.. They lost IN S1 ultimately with Lockon Neil dead and Allelujah captured WITH setsuna lost by himself

    • @Norbert_Sattler
      @Norbert_Sattler 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@jamavra Now that you mention the tactics:
      Something that many people seem to overlook in light of the far flashier technological superiority of the Gundams are is Sumeragi's contribution.
      In the beginning the Gundams easily mop up enemies by taking them by surprise. They know exactly what to do and have precise plans and back-up plans and contingency plans for every conceivable situation, while the enemy is just thrown into the cold water, not having a clue how to react.
      And even when they know that a Gundam attack is like to come, they are still outmanouvered and outsmarted, in addition to being technologically outclassed.
      The best example is the attack on on Monaco... erm I mean Moralia. The Gundams are not just charching in like Berserkers, but following carefully layed out plans that maximise their impact in each area. And when something unexpected happens (i.e. Setsuna's clash with Al-Saaches) their tactical forecaster alters the plans and makes them switch to a different set of pre-prepared plans or sometimes even improvises later in the series.
      Thanks to those plans the Gundams are able to constantly keep the enemies on the backfoot and prevent them taking full advantage of their numbers. They even "disappear" for a time to surprisingly turn up right at the enemy's headquarters, bypassing at least some defenders elsewhere, again minimizing the effect of the enemy's superior numbers.
      How big of a component those tactical forecasts really are can be seen when they are matched in this field by Sumeragi's role model.
      Prior to that the Gundams only got in trouble when they didn't follow her plans.
      Real tactics being used is something that doesn't happen all that often in Gundam shows... or at least not something that's drawn much attention to. Most fights are all about the main characters smashing up other enemy units.
      Which is something that's both nice and not so nice in SEED. Because they have all those different weapon systems on the archangel and different ammunition for the missile launchers, opening up many tactical options and sometimes that leads to exactly that... but most of the time it's just shouting out technobabbel to re-used bits of animation.
      I really loved the episode where they did a silent run with La Flaga's sneak attack and almost took out the enemy ship with the positron beams.

    • @jamavra
      @jamavra 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@Norbert_Sattler I guess my take is that these are still shows for teens and a young demographic and all the lessons Gundam teaches us the atrocities of war and how people should be able to communicate better. That's always been the core of any Gundam really.
      These nuances with tactical forecasting just makes the show a bit more mature and deals with some more adult problems.
      That and the team aesthetic and the way the show gives the team options to win but also the possibility of losing is there.
      That final Ribbons Vs Setsuna standoff was a stalemate really. Until the last charge, they both had a 50-50 chance of winning or losing. Remember, all the S2 Gundam's were beaten up by the end of that intense battle.
      Unlike Wing where you know Heero had the last shot of the Buster rifle going through a falling Libra debris. In Endless Waltz you knew that the last shot of the Buster rifle would end the Barton rule in an instant. Yes the other 3 were beaten and Nataku had an identity crisis lol

    I enjoyed how 00 chose to go with a more modern vision of the future, from its use of the AD timeline to having multiple superpowers and independent states all on Earth to involving the politics of energy. While having all of mankind unite and colonize the far reaches of the universe is really cool and I enjoy a lot of shows and films based around that idea, nobody really sees that as a world that's right around the corner anymore.

  • @androyus

    Just a future hint: Celestial Being trying to eradicate war and usher/boost the unification of the different world-nations in Season 1 is just one stage of Aeolia's grand plan. Season 2 will show you that there will be (big) bumps on the road of the said plan and then the movie will be the payoff of the plan. 00 has two things going for it that you probably don't have context for, as you had to "be there", but-
    1. It came out after the crushing disappointment of Seed Destiny, it basically had to restore the "good name" of Gundam and it succeeded by most measures (aside from commercial success in the West, but Gundam was already pretty nearly dead commercially overseas at that point anyhow.)
    2. It's basically a better version of Wing. Remove nostalgia from the equation, and you can pretty much see that 00 does virtually everything Wing does, but much better and more believably. Wing is held in pretty high regard in most corners, but I feel like it's only because what it had to say about Gundam was new AT THE TIME. And it was the majority of the West's first exposure to Gundam as well, so of course people still love Wing. That said... again... 00 hits virtually all the same story beats and character archetypes as Wing and with a few exceptions, handles them with much more care and attention to detail.

    00 had some really good beats for me, though admittedly it was a let-down in many other ways.
    "Allelujah is just a good dude with some baggage"
    a staggering amount of baggage, really, and the split personality makes sense here, and lets him be that good dude, compartmentalizing what would otherwise be the utterly unviable amount of trauma he's been through
    My favorite part of S1, and what really ended up being the point of the whole season, was when the Meisters were almost, nearly denied total victory due to some absolutely brilliant strategy and crack piloting on the part of the opfor, which led every single one of them to nearly have a nervous breakdown as they had believed (justifiably) that they were utterly invincible. This leads to the actual secret reason for the existence of Celestial Being, that being to force the world powers to quit their petty squabbles and work together, the Meisters just had no idea that the plan was to force them to unite in order to stop the rampaging Gundams.

Every step has some sort of consequence that can impact the story in one way or another. Another thing to note is the antagonist, there are some shows that people would like to see the antagonists be very difficult to deal with/kill. I am a big fan of 00, but even I can see the issues many have with it. Some are valid, and some fall into the difference of opinion. Either way never hurts me to hear someone say "Eh 00 isn't for me.". I think a lot of us in the West CLAMOURED for something better than Seed Destiny and that is probably what made 00 so hot in the U.S. for a time, even if in lieu of Toonami it was on SciFi channel and prone to edit cuts due to SciFi's abundant commercials, and run-time restrictions. It was still publically accessible without buying the DVD's first and of course the fan-sub community was hard at work as soon as the series launched.
    I think 00 tried to do some great stuff, but I think like many Anime doing the split season stuff back in the late 2000's, it wasn't handled well and executive demands on certain changes kind of mangled some of the storytelling. Not unlike Code Geass R2... seems Sunrise should notice this damning pattern.

    Gundam 00 is the kind of series I like most... As you said, "A matter of taste I suppose". I very much like the sense that a character can change the world around them. This doesn't mean the 00 style is the best way to do this, but its a start.
    The ideal setup, is not for characters to produce change on their own, but to instead create what could be considered an "Alliance Victory"... They win over as many allies as they can to defend against the enemy, and then start winning over the enemy's allies by instead of demanding something of the loser of the war, offer to help rebuild.
    The best ending for a war, is for those in the opposing faction who want what's best for their people to turn on those in their faction who merely want war.

    Resulted their "copy-paste" method. It saved resources, and whatever they could recycle from previous Mobile Suits, they did.
    It took them 250 years to get ready for ther introduction, and even scouting a proper team took them another 30 or so.
    For me. That's what I liked. That they were doing what they were doing, with what they had and making decisions. Hard decisions leading up to Season 2, on how exactly they were going to spend those resources.

I love the concept of starting off with characters that are kind of hard to like and rough around the edges that we start to learn more about and grow with over time (looking at you Heero you murderous bastard). For both wing and 00 the ones who kept me invested early were the down to earth nicer members of the teams, duo and lockon. The shows then began to spread out with the politics and world views of the opposing factions and protagonists in a way that drew me in and made binge sections where I had to know what happened next. Season 2 of 00 I really enjoyed as well, though fav moment overall is from season 1 when setsuna and tiera team up against the Thrones. That marked the moment for me where I was fully invested in the show and hyped as all hell for the gundam meisters. I havent seen the movie yet, mainly because I really liked how the show ended and felt like anything past that would just kind of be needless tack on (same for endless waltz, also dont like the waltz versions of the gundams). Overall 00 provided an experience that I thoroughly enjoyed and would watch again, it's a shame I started Seed right after lol.

    I was only 2 years old when this show aired in Japan and safe to say I love it despite many flaws like the lacks of focus for other characters like Sergei or Soma and the Gundams is basically more super robots than real robots but I still love them nonetheless.

    As someone generally new to Gundam (honestly I'm mostly here for the gunpla), I came to a lot of similar conclusions about the series overall quality. The in-depth politics and reasonable actions among all the different characters and factions puts me in mind of all my favorite parts of my favorite anime of all time, Code Geass. One of the big sticking points between Gundam franchise and I is that Gundam plots tend to get melodramatically sanctimonious about war being bad. From where I stand, war is just organized fighting, no more, no less. So to specifically state that fighting is particularly bad only after exceeding a certain threshold of scale and coordination often seems to miss the point that small "wars" happen all around us and yet no one bats an eye until it starts looking like a nuke went off (hmm...).
    So on one side you have Celestial Being essentially taking the theme of Gundam to its logical conclusion and literally declare war on war. But then the world immediately distrusts them and responds to their actions in ways that you could actually see happening if somebody tried to pull that same stunt IRL. And yet the members of Celestial Being remain sincere in their desire to make the world better for highly individualized reasons. All those ideas put together in the same series makes this the first Gundam series I've tried to get into that seemed to understand that fractures in the convoluted web of globalist politics aren't gonna' go away overnight with a few kumbayas and worldwide hand-holding. Try to take over the world, no matter how noble your reasoning sounds, and you're gonna' get some push back, and not even from necessarily bad people. What kind of idiot trusts an independent orbitally-stationed PMC with exclusive access to experimental technology powerful enough to glass a third-world country? It's like the writer is saying, "sure, war is bad, but what're *you* gonna' do about it, genius?"
    SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2 BELOW
    ...Less insightful was the ending that suggested that, if humans only had psychic powers, we would never go to war. Laughs in Warhammer 40K, wherein the most dangerous and powerful warmongers in the entire series are either extremely powerful psychics themselves, employers of extremely powerful psychics, or the eldritch anthropomorphism of emotions that manifest in reality via extremely powerful psychics. ...Well, except for the Tau, who have no psychics at all and make up for it with their army of giant robots- okay, NOW I'm beginning to see the Gundam parallels.

    Technological superiority can mean a lot. If we were to pit a modern jet fighter against, say, the Red Baron(as one of the most infamous fighters in the past), there's good odds the modern jet fighter would likely murderstomp the Red Baron. And that's a difference of only two or three decades.
    Gundam 00 is essentially what happens if we dropped a well supplied modern jet fighter squadron in the middle of WWII and told them to just "kill everyone, run before things get too dangerous".
    EDIT: That being said though, you may hate Season Two. It's a lot more Super Robot from that point forwards.
    EDIT 2: Oh, right, Setsuna is bog standard normal in Season One, and Tieria... That'd be spoilers for Season 2. Allelujah is the only "Super Pilot", but even so, it isn't really apparent until the end.

      EDIT: So I just looked them up, and even saw a comparison between the Mitsubishi Zero(which, to be fair, isn't fair, since the Zero apparently started calling behind it's other WWII contenders) and the F14 Tomcat... Yeah, just two or three decades is enough to create quite the tech gap.

    But the one thing that bothered me was the allelujah/hallelujah subplot
    Like i was hoping this split personality was going to screw up a mission that will haunt celestial being later in the series
    And then they killed off hallelujah but later brought him back to life and was only brought up for intense one off fight

    I am a big 00 fan and 00 is my favorite in the Gundam series. In my personal tastes, it hit all the right marks and made me truly love the series. It was my 4th Gundam series to watch after Wing, then G Fighter, but in between those two was the 3 part movie of Gundam 79 (original Gundam, I call it that cause it came out in 1979 and took place in U.C. 0079). Then I watched S.E.E.D. and S.E.E.D. Destiny... Lockon is the greatest character, the best bro, the greatest guy you will ever meet if given the chance. I really enjoy MOST of the cast for the A.D. era. Again, MOST, there's a reason why and you shall...sadly see it when watching season 2.
    Fun fact, Setsuna is Amuro, Dearka, and Quatre. He really likes potato chips...for some weird reason.
