You can just chain 4 patterns. But also don't forget that you can make a single pattern sound like more than 16 steps with different Active Steps per part and probability.
I love the fact that for most people, the favourite patch on the Drum Machine appears to be the least drum-like one! It can store 16 kits and 16 patterns (programs, actually - pattern + the kit that's associated with it).
Oscillator Sink Each kit can have 16 patterns? So 256 combinations in total? You are providing 16 kits and 1 pattern each? And how many steps in each pattern? 16?
@@valdiskrebs566 no, it's 16 patterns, 16 kits, it's just that each pattern has a kit associated with it. I'm providing the 16 kits, you'll have to provide the patterns 😉
Oscillator Sink Every piece of gear seems to have its own terminology... and I am not a Volca person. So, for any of 16 patterns I create, I can choose one of 16 kits, and I can change the kit as the pattern plays? Your 16 kits replace the factory kits from Korg? (The machine can only store 16 kits?)
These are awesome. But my, they will take a long time to transcribe. Is there a mega cheap MIDI interface anyone recommends that would work for loading these on?
Thank you for your work, these sound awesome! I'm having a bit of trouble getting them across to the Volca though. I am running the latest firmware, MIDI RX Short Message is On, running on split channel 1-6 and using a Keystep as an interface. I've tried both Chrome and Opera with them both yielding the same result - I'm only getting 2 of the sounds per kit across while the others seem to be somehow "lost in translation" and completely different from the ones in the video. For example, on the Vyla kit the sounds associated with 1 and 5 work as intended - 2, 3 and 4 are various stages of white noise while 6 sounds like a rimshot. I'm missing something here but not too sure what. Help grealty appreciated!
It sounds like the Keystep is struggling to keep up with the CC messages being sent (it doesn't manage the DX7 sysex at all). Do you have another midi interface you could try?
@@OscillatorSink Unfortunately this is the only way I can send midi across for now but that's fine, it means I have some exploratory knob twisting ahead of me! Cheers for the reply :)
Hello, I am a complete beginner. How do I connect my Volca drum to the Windows PC to transfer a patch? thanks for any help. Congratulations to oscillatorsink for these patches.
You will need a USB midi interface. If you have an audio interface with midi, then that will work, otherwise you can get something like the Roland UM-ONE mk 2. There are cheaper options, which are sometimes fine, but I'd stick to something reliable like the Roland.
Yes. So there'll be one or two factors playing into that depending on the pattern: 1. Some steps have probability applied so aren't firing every time the pattern repeats 2. Some parts have patterns with different numbers of active steps so there is some polymeter stuff happening as they roll over each other.
I don't have a Volca Drum ( yet ) but it's so interesting to hear what you have done with it. Great !!!! Most of them are perfect for ... rhythm meditation ? ;)
Huh. I'll have to check that later. If the others are working for you then it might be worth trying to send it again - sometimes interfaces aren't keen on the sudden blast of cc messages.
@@OscillatorSink It was definitely my midi interface (s) messing around with cc, one of the ghost in the machine moments. Why only two parts out of the whole kit, that is a strange one. Basically, part 2 and 3 sounded super heavily folded and messed up. This tool you are using btw, is amazing for creating your own patches and having nice visualisation of what you are doing on the interface. So false alarm, sorry.
@@earlsfield all good - glad I hadn't messed up the patches! I think I need to throttle the rate of the midi messages a bit. There's even a comment in the code wondering if that'd be a good idea.
@@OscillatorSink This is happening to me 2 years on. OS soft 1 parts sound nothing like what you have in the video. All other kits sound just fine and in line with your video.
Well, you can chain patterns, but that's not what I'm doing here, I'm making use of the per step probability, so some steps don't always play, giving the illusion of a longer loop.
Hey man, thanks so much for this. One question: is there anyway to export a kit that you have already saved on your Volca Drum to the editor (or anyway to back those up to a computer in general if that's not possible)?
@@OscillatorSink Lol well that makes sense. What a bummer though. One quick question, if I save a patch from the editor as a midi file, how do I then load that back into the editor later?
@@user-kx5fs9jy1g you can't currently. The best thing to do is create a sharable patch link and stick that in a text document or spreadsheet. That link contains the whole patch and going to it in your browser will load it in the editor.
I've just spent two hours trying to transfer your patch to my Drum via Chrome. I tried using a minijack-to-mini-jack, a Midi interface (Focusrite 2i2) and also midi directly to the compute's headphone in. I tried the sync and the headphone in on the Volca. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance :)
I don't think the Focusrite 2i2 has a MIDI connection? You need to use a midi cable (a 5 pin DIN cable, not an audio jack) into the Volca Drum's midi in and the other end into a Midi interface of some kind. By the sounds of it you might not have a midi interface?
I'm a total noob to synths. How come with Vyla, which sounds great, you did not input any steps if that is the right term? you just showed us the sounds you made in the kit. Leaving it to us to make the pattern? thanks for all the work! I have a volca drum coming in a couple days
@@OscillatorSink good idea, especially with those sounds I think. One other thing OS, I just connected my yamaha mixer (has usb) to computer. I dont have a volca yet. But your website was saying "could not get midi access". There is no midi with the yahama mixer (that I was going to use as the interface to save money). So if this won't work, should I just get a cheap midi to usb adapter (if they exist) or should I spring for a read audio interface? thanks! (ps I'm thinking I just have to wait until the volca arrives and plug that into the yahama mixer; got confused because technically, nothing on this end is midi, meaning the volca or the yahama mixer, but I guess your download is midi info; told you I'm a noob)
@@OscillatorSink im trying to be DAWless so that's why i dont want to buy an interface. I'll see if i can make it work with the Yamaha. Im not being cheap (i ordered a dfam, strymon big sky and timeline). Just dont want something im going to use once. The mixer i use for guitar/bass. Ps that Roland thing is reallt cheap lol, I'll get that if this doesnt work, thanks again!
You always needed one, you just didn't know it yet. I think you'll really dig it though, genuinely; the synthesis engine is just super focused by flexible within that framework. Really good fun.
They are so very, very different, almost doesn't make sense to compare them. I'd choose the Volca personally, but what kind of drum sounds do you want? What sort of music are you making?
@@marcoagius6926 personally for those sounds, I would look at something that you could just load samples of those machines into - maybe something like the Elektron Model:Samples if this is the kind of price range you're looking at. You definitely don't want the Volca Drum for those sounds and the SR16 is probably too hi-fi for that kind of sound too. Loading your own samples into something will definitely be the way to go at this price.
Hey man I am a noob to making electronic music, really appreciate the sounds! I'm having trouble getting these onto my volca drum, its hooked up to a Focusrite Saffire 6 MIDI interface (which is selected as you say to do in the instructions) but when I click send it does nothing?
Make sure your Volca doesn't have a midi channel selected (ie it's in the split channel mode) and that the "Midi RX Short Message" setting is turned on in the global settings. Just to rule other stuff out - I'd suggest not running any DAW software at the same time and if you have another MIDI cable try that. Oh and also try moving the sliders in the interface - can you see that change parameters on the Volca?
@@OscillatorSink hey man im so sorry to have wasted your time, I realised i had to connect a MIDI cable (im such a noob) its working now though, thank you so much!!
It is either: You need to have your Volca set to split channel mode. Go into global settings and turn off which ever midi channel is set up. Or You aren't running the current firmware.
I don't have a Volca Drums/Sample/Beats yet. I'm leaning towards the Sample partially because I can load African percussion sounds on to it. Do you think you could get reasonably close to the sound of a Djembe with the Volca Drum? I haven't found a good example yet and music stores that sell Volca's are far away. And another question, I think most Volca Drum demo's sound a little on the harsh side. I like the metallic sound, but I'd like to roll off some high end. Can you set a Low Pass Filter per sample?
I'm not sure if you'd get a really convincing djembe, but it does do good general "percussion" sounds if you want. What you need to remember is that the Volca Drum isn't playing back samples - it's a synthesiser and the sounds are being created "from scratch". There isn't a filter per part (well there is on the noise sources, but not the overall part), but if you synthesise a mellow sound, then it'll be mellow. I think a number of the kits in this pack are pretty mellow, but maybe you disagree?
@@OscillatorSink Oh it doesn't have to be convincing, but it would be nice if you could make something that resembles it. There are some very nice sounds in this demo that sound pretty mellow, I especially like the OS-Reso1 and OS-Deep2 sounds. It's just that in general when I hear Volca Drum demo's I often hear some very interesting sounds that I would just like to make slíghtly less harsh. It just seems to be the overall character of the Volca Drum I think. Thanks for the quick reply :) I think I'm going for the Volca Sample first (and the NTS-1), but the Drum is also definitely on the list of stuff I want to own eventually. That reminds me, do you think you'll get the NTS-1? I'm very hyped about it, even just as an effects processor it seems like a lot of bang for the buck and the perfect Volca companion.
@@ericcroupe oh yeah, I can see that - I'm using the String physical model wave guide to provide a great deal of the sound there, so that whole prepared piano vibe makes sense.
@@OscillatorSink any plans for an in depth digitone+volca drum video? Would love to see someone setup a midi macro that acts like a ctrl-all for the digitone and external hardware at the same time
What's the easiest way to connect Volca Drum to my iMac? I just realized my old Presonus audio interface doesn't even work with the latest version of MacOS.
There are simple USB Midi interfaces which should work. I usually recommend the Roland UM-ONE mk 2, but make sure that there is support on macOS right now because frankly, you never can tell!
Dang it, it didn't work for me even with Chrome allowing MIDI and the volca drum firmware updated to 115. But at least I can manually copy the values of each parameter to get the sounds.
Do you have the Volca set to a specific midi channel? It needs to be in the default split channel mode. That's the usual cause of issues. Otherwise it's usually a problem with the midi interface.
@@OscillatorSinkyou're right you superstar! It was the MIDI interface. I changed it and got everything to work. Great patches, thank you!! Now the question is how do you use a MIDI controller or DAW sequencer with it? I don't know why each sound is on a different MIDI channel. That makes it tough. You must have to rewire something in a DAW.
You can set it to work on a single midi channel (details in the manual) - just bear in mind that it won't work with my editor in that mode. On the DAW front, not to brag, but as a Reaper user, the drum per channel makes no difference to me as that's easy to do on one track 😎... But yes single channel mode might he easier for you.
I’m transcribing these manually and some just do not sound the same as your video. They’re close! But off in like tone. I’ve checked the model type, send, and wave guide settings etc.. any advice..?
Thanks for the fast reply. So an example is part 6 on chip1. Yours is higher pitched and fuller sounding, with a few like arcade game feel. Mine has the same strike and tail off but it’s almost entirely a bass sound, low pitched. Your part 2 is almost like a gun sound or a balloon pop, mine is more like just a noise strike. I’m going to double check quickly.. Scratch that, I’d missed the processing settings on part 6.. I’ll review part 2 again.. it must be me. Thanks so much for this, these are great sounds and good for learning how to use the machine. And spot your own mistakes, apparently..
hi i want to download these patches into my volca drum. there are no links to download I saw: if I understand correctly the transfer happens using yours online editor by connecting a midi interface from the pc to volca drums’ midi in. i don't have a pc but only an ipad. if i use a midi interface compatible with ipad like the Roland UN-ONE MK2 can i pass the patches to volca drum?
@@apanebia yes but you'll need to use Chrome or a browser based on it like Opera. The problem on iOS is that *all* browsers are actually just frames around Safari.
@@OscillatorSink I've tried both... I've currently got the Volca in single mode on channel 10... The CC values of the first 6 pads (36, 37, 38, 39, 40 and 41 as shown on custom drum map) are selected for the corresponding pads on the Controller Map section and in this section I have the MIDI channel for the pads set to 10 and the mode is set to CC...

Oscillator Sink Sorry for the many questions... can the Vyla kit be tuned to a specific scale, like C minor?
Nice Work!
Thank you!
@Guglielmo.Fratticioli just trying to find time to record it between a young baby and my day job getting super busy. It's coming though, I promise!
These are awesome. But my, they will take a long time to transcribe. Is there a mega cheap MIDI interface anyone recommends that would work for loading these on?
Roland UM-ONE mk 2.
oh wow
Thanks man, its cool
great!
Thank you very much for your help. I will order a usb interface. Have a nice day.
Just watched it again...are the patterns varying when they are repeated?
Yes. So there'll be one or two factors playing into that depending on the pattern:
1. Some steps have probability applied so aren't firing every time the pattern repeats
2. Some parts have patterns with different numbers of active steps so there is some polymeter stuff happening as they roll over each other.
@@OscillatorSink that's really cool, thank you for the explanation!
I don't have a Volca Drum ( yet ) but it's so interesting to hear what you have done with it. Great !!!! Most of them are perfect for ... rhythm meditation ? ;)
Rhythm Meditation is my Brand.
I thought I'd ask the expert. Do you think the Volca Drum is capable of making a Middle Eastern percussion kit? thanks
Is there a way to move an instrument part between kits? such as moving/copying the "snare" of 1st kit to 3rd kit etc...
Not on the current firmware sadly.
btw OS soft 1 - for whatever reason it does not sound even close to the demo, maybe something happened on its dedicated page?
All other kits sound just fine and in line with your video.
wow the Vyla patch was immense like being hit by a train
late to the party but nice patches! how to you get the volca to play more then a 1 bar loop ?
Well, you can chain patterns, but that's not what I'm doing here, I'm making use of the per step probability, so some steps don't always play, giving the illusion of a longer loop.
Could you recoment a cable to connect to PC? Thank you!
For midi? Roland UM-ONE MK 2.
You are amazing!
No, u.
@@OscillatorSink 😆
do i need a midi interface to download the kits to my korg, or does an midi to usb work?
MIDI to USB is a MIDI interface - so you're all set!
Hey man, thanks so much for this. One question: is there anyway to export a kit that you have already saved on your Volca Drum to the editor (or anyway to back those up to a computer in general if that's not possible)?
There's no MIDI output on the Volca Drum, so no, not to my knowledge anyway.
@@OscillatorSink Got it. Thanks!
how I can download it if have a Mac?
Install and use Chrome as your browser. It's cross platform, but you need a browser that supports midi (Safari doesn't).
It was just because it felt better to improvise a part rather than press play - that's all!
Oh, and enjoy your Volca when it arrives - the Drum is my favourite of the lot!
@@Raven_of_Doom if you just want a good, cheap USB MIDI Interface grab a Roland UM-ONE mk 2. No worries about the questions!
Ps that Roland thing is reallt cheap lol, I'll get that if this doesnt work, thanks again!
cool, now i need a volka drum
You always needed one, you just didn't know it yet.
I think you'll really dig it though, genuinely; the synthesis engine is just super focused by flexible within that framework. Really good fun.
same here! this sort of thing is exactly why I want one! great work again OS
when i click on the different packs, synthmata.com opens with default drum settings.... any help please!
What browser are you using? Have you allowed midi permissions?
@@OscillatorSink ahh ye! used chrome and thats all what it needed. feeling stupid now
thanks for the quick response!
I did everything like you said but it seems to be sending me completely random patches.... any idea how to fix it?
Is your Volca Drum in split channel mode (each drum on a separate midi channel)? Are you running the up-to-date firmware?
Hi! Which drum machine would you choose? This or the alesis sr16 drum machine? Thanks
They are so very, very different, almost doesn't make sense to compare them. I'd choose the Volca personally, but what kind of drum sounds do you want? What sort of music are you making?
@@OscillatorSink more like synthwave. Any drum machines these days that have that 80's simmons drum sounds?
@@marcoagius6926 personally for those sounds, I would look at something that you could just load samples of those machines into - maybe something like the Elektron Model:Samples if this is the kind of price range you're looking at.
You definitely don't want the Volca Drum for those sounds and the SR16 is probably too hi-fi for that kind of sound too. Loading your own samples into something will definitely be the way to go at this price.
@@OscillatorSink thanks for your reply!
@@OscillatorSink hey man im so sorry to have wasted your time, I realised i had to connect a MIDI cable (im such a noob) its working now though, thank you so much!!
i also appreciate the incredibly fast reply, keep up the amazing work man
exxelent...cheers
Are you using a standard usb in-out midi converter cable to use the editor?
Yes. Well, actually here I'm using the midi on my audio interface, but most USB midi cables should work fine.
Awesome! Thanks for your quick reply.
I dont know why but when I send the patches some times 1 or 2 of the parts sound nothing like the video. Anyone have any idea why??
It is either: You need to have your Volca set to split channel mode. Go into global settings and turn off which ever midi channel is set up.
Or
You aren't running the current firmware.
you said browsers that support weppidy? I really replayed that word a couple dozens of times, and have no idea what you said!? help me out!
Web Midi
So that's Chrome and browsers based on Chromium - Opera, new Edge, etc.
@@OttosTheName I very much intend to pick up an NTS-1 yes!
nice!!
Cheers! 👍
Last tune sounds like a rendition of an Aphex Twin track
I'll take that!
@@OscillatorSink specifically sounds like one of the broken piano interlude ditties on druqs
I usually recommend the Roland UM-ONE mk 2, but make sure that there is support on macOS right now because frankly, you never can tell!
damn!
Thanks for sharing! You got a neutron yet?😉😁....(sorry😂🙌)
Not. Yet.
Gamelan sounds amazing! i'm from Indonesia hahaha
Thank you!
@@OscillatorSink thank you for making alot of synth content !!
Without hearing in what way they're off... I'm not sure what to tell you... "Off" how?
@@OscillatorSink hmm, part 2 does seem to be the same. Surely it’s me though.
@@brokenscart7989 sounds like maybe you missed the waveform type for that part? Remember that there are 3 different noise modes as well...

Can anyone help me with setting up the Volca Drum to run on the Beatstep Pro drum sequence?? I'm losing the will to live!!
What have you tried so far? Is your Volca in single channel or split channel mode?
@@OscillatorSink I've tried both...
I've currently got the Volca in single mode on channel 10... On BSP MCC I have custom drum map selected and all pads (or even just the first 6) set to channel 10... Drum sequence is set to send and receive on channel 10... The CC values of the first 6 pads (36, 37, 38, 39, 40 and 41 as shown on custom drum map) are selected for the corresponding pads on the Controller Map section and in this section I have the MIDI channel for the pads set to 10 and the mode is set to CC...
You want the pads to be in Midi Note mode, not CC.
Those values are the note numbers (C2, C#2, etc.), not CC numbers.
In split mode, just use any note on channels 1 to 6
