Thanks for the vote of confidence Marko but shit the T7 still scares me often and occasionally frustrates me. You'll be belting around thinking "this is an amazingly capable bike for it's size, I love it!" nek minnit you get it stuck halfway over a log 🤦‍♂️ But for a mid size all rounder ya can't beat it, the sales figures speak for themselves ❤ Looking forward to hearing the outcome of the meeting with the fun popo too mate 🤙

The T7 is an amazing bike; between weight, capability and cost it is usually the answer to any question.
But I bought a DR650 instead, for me, today, it makes the most sense while not making any sense.
I’m an average guy at 54, I ride alone and won’t be going on a RTW trip anytime soon.
A fully kitted out DR is about the pre tax cost of a T7; the accountant says DR for the win.
The DR is about 80 pounds lighter than the T7; the chiropractor says DR for the win.
The DR is mechanically simpler than the T7, anybody can fix it anywhere; the dealerships say T7 for the win.
The DR has an unbelievable amount of global aftermarket support, you can get everything from anywhere; again, the dealerships say T7 for the win.
The T7 has more power than the DR; the police say DR for the win, use any of that extra on road capability and they take your license and possibly the bike.
If you’re looking for a unicorn you already have it, if such a bike could ever even exist.
Small light bikes struggle with the long haul highways, big powerful bikes struggle with challenging terrain, few bikes walk the thin line between both.
The T7 is one but at the edge of that envelope, the DR is that envelope.
    Great video, thanks.

I had a couple of DR650s, and have considered getting a third. But I got a '24 T7 now and really have a hard time with the idea now of "going back" to the DR650. The extra power, better gearing, buttery smooth fuel injection, wind protection, ABS, modern lighting/clocks, and vastly superior stand up ergonomics would be hard to give up all in exchange for less weight.

I’ve got a DRZ400 and a T700 and it’s a great combo. The DRZ does feel like a mini bike after the T700 and I wouldn’t take the T700 where I’d take the DRZ. I wouldn’t want to be on the T700 in a pickle by myself but for longer distance and camping it’s the bees knees. I don’t reckon you’d regret the T700 from what riding I see you do in your TH-cam’s Mark. Anyway, half the fun in getting a new bike is the conundrum of what to get. Cheers.

We've been farting around on quite a few bike combos in the past years and here is what we think is the best unicorn. For the trail rides and smaller local trails, the DR is hands down the best option. Cheap parts, cheap maintenance, tough as a tank, etc... you know this better than any of us. But here is where it get's interesting. I used to own a VStrom 650. Great bike but....... on long trips, loaded with luggage, on highways that offered 130km/h Speed limits (in the US) and 110km/h here in Canada, that 650 VStrom was pulling hard especially fully loaded and going up steep mountain sides. All this was without a passenger. It was not the best to pass slower vehicles either. Now that I replaced my VStrom with a 1290 Super adventure a few years ago... totally a different ball game. There is no more HP issue when loaded. Also, keep in mind that if your big bike is to do long rides, the AT has cruise control whereas the T7 does not. That has always been a game changer. Yes I know the throttle lock works pretty good but it's not the same. If you would be ridding solo, I think the T7 would be a better all-around do it all bike.. But if you need a long haul bike and ridding with a pillion, the AT would be a better option.

Hi all, I have the T 700 since July 31, 2019 and a 250 WR R since 2017. 2 very different motorcycles. I thought buying the 250 WR R all do with ... but over long distances it's complicated especially on the fast portions of highways and expressways. baggage allowance as well. you end up putting your bike on the trailer. which forces you to make a loop and come back to the same place which is restrictive.
watch out for the T 700 or any other large dual sport weighing 200 kg or more.
when you've knocked it down on a big slope solo it can be very complicated to get it up. You need a good level of piloting to go everywhere off road. I'm happy with this bike. I am 56 years old, I measure 1.70m for 70 kg in good physical condition. it will be necessary to change the fork springs and rear spring.
install a carrier with large handles to raise the motorcycle. I think a 701 or a 690 KTM are more versatile motorcycles than the T 700 but with more vibrations on the road.
for the maintenance of the motorcycle, I do it myself. oil change every 5000 km if you do off road often. changing the spark plugs is boring on the T 700. I fell into the water while crossing a river "on a long off-road trip". air box filled with water and drowned candles.
3h30 of disassembly, reassembly and you're happy when the bike starts again. there is no perfect motorcycle for everything and the T 700 is no exception to this theory.

    Conundrum indeed Mark!
I enjoy honing the little skills i have on the small bike to use on the big bike. If you can call my 650 small And a little lighter to pick up when it all goes to poop.
But you need to call in the plastic surgeon to get the smile off my face after riding the big girl.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you can't decide, extend the shed. 😁

There is no way the T700 can replace a DR650 in terms of cost, weight, off-road handling, and simplicity. The best thing at least in my opinion, is to own at least two bikes; a true dual sport like the DR650, and a street bike for long distance road travel (like your Suzuki Boulevard). Maybe even a pure dirt bike too, for more intense trail riding. Just imagine trying to pick up that T700 if you dump it on the trails somewhere. Or how much would it cost to repair it when it falls down and breaks all that plastic fairing stuff.

Interesting predicament Mark. I have a 2018 Africa Twin Adventure Sport which I'm about to sell as I have bought a DR 650 and added all the goodies to it. I too am in Victoria and done a lot of the tracks you have and yes, the AT is absolutely superior bike on road to the DR. Why am I heading in the opposite direction to you? Mainly because I want to do less on road and more off road. So, if you want more on road and comfortability, definitely go the AT as it is (in my humble yet experienced opinion) a better all round bike to the Tenere. Cheers!

I have a DR650. I bought a Vstrom800 to do a Kimberly/Central Aus/home to Cairns trip. The Vstrom excelled. I did entertain the thought of taking the Vstrom through the Simpson but decided to return to Alice with the DR to do the Simpson. Glad I did as the Vstrom would have been just about impossible as a solo trip through that sand. Both great bikes but I'll probably sell the Vstrom in a year or 2 & keep the DR. The DR I've decided is very hard to replace. The closest thing is the Honda CRF 300.... but it still does not do what the DR does.

I’ve been toRn between the T7 and the Africa twin for a while. I live my drz but I want to go on longer trips on the highway. The drz sucks on the highway. It would be nice to go on the highway for a few hundred miles to find campgrounds and new adventures. I’m worried about getting bored of the T7 but also worried that the Africa twin is to heavy and too much for off road. The t7 looks amazing and sounds great too.

I think you have a greater liking for the Africa Twin, "it spins your wheels". The T700 is a closer replacement upgrade for the DR while the Africa Twin is a better replacement and extension for Harry. So to keep the DR you would be better off with the AT. If you are going to replace both the DR and C50 then the T700 might be the choice.

The power of 1000cc is better and since he wants to keep the DR650 it is less like the bike he wants to keep. Besides the DR is not worth that much so it is worth it to keep it.

I demo-rode a T700. It seemed like a great bike for riding all over, but it also made me appreciate just how good of a value my DR is.
I can get a cheap DR and ride it as I upgrade...DOT knobbies, gearing, suspension, carbing, exhaust, 5-8gal tank, big-bore, cam, etc. It can be shaved at least as light as 320lb curb, and modded for over 55WHP. Wide-ratio tranny gearing is available too.
A T700 can use some customizing too, but it's over $10K, just to start off.

Since you’re keeping Max, the Africa Twin seems a better fit. You’ll have to upgrade your off-roading skills to compensate for the extra weight. Either way the AT and T7 are top spec bikes, for their specific purposes. 👍🏼 😎 🇺🇸 🌎

Bingo! "The perfect unicorn is never going to happen." Single track is single track, fire roads are fire roads, and wide open roads are something else again. Add the variables of age, experience, available time to ride, and thickness of wallet, each of us will come to a different conclusion. For me it is a DR650ES. With proper tires it will single track. Offroad trails 40 or 50 miles from home I don't mind riding there. Riding destinations more than 50 miles from home and the DR gets to ride on the trailer. I'll be 70 in another month and I know that I just can't make a wrong turn in the woods on a T7 or AT. No problem when I was 35 or 40. But I accept my reality and ride within my ability to pick a bike up and/or drag it around to the desired direction. For street rides with my warden I have a Heritage Classic.

While I love seeing you play around with all your bikes, I do truly believe for what you do that the T7 could do everything comfortably. Save some money on registration, maintenance and make space around the place. How often do you take Nay out? Maybe the Africa Twin wouldn't get used enough? With the T7, you 'could' take Nay out when you like and be somewhat comfortable. You could tackle rambles and go basically anywhere the DR650 does. With the money saved maybe buy an old DRZ400 and do a budget build with that? Wouldn't make sense to have a T7 and DR650 (Sorry full pelt Pete!)

I rode a Tiger 800 XCX for 5 years. As an all road tourer it coped with outback tracks pretty well and was great for long tar sections. I would not buy the 700 because it doesn’t have cruise control, something you don’t miss until you have it! The weight and fragility factor makes you stay away from difficult terrain if you can. Sure there are plenty of riders who can make off road look easy on these big bikes, but for mere mortals imagine that point of balance failure and 230 kg falls with you hopefully not underneath it alone.

  • @ExpeditionAustralia
    @ExpeditionAustralia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I reckon you sell the cruiser and buy the T7 but keep Max. Give it a few months and see how it goes. See if you find yourself wanting for a lighter bike for the gnarly stuff and the Simpson. Then you’ve still got Max there. If 6 months down the track and you haven’t needed Max then you’ve found your unicorn. Personally I reckon the T7 for longer trips and a WR250 for gnarly trips is the best combo.

  • @CRFLAus
    @CRFLAus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

As a AT rider, and knowing what type of riding you do Mark, I'd probably say go for the T700. Most pretty good dirt bike riders seem to go to the Yamaha. But if you're 2 up going on long trips the AT will be better. Both the AT & T700 are going to be hard work in the desert, people do it but it's heaps harder. Keeping Max is a good idea for some harder terrain but then again Josh & Nat sold their skinny bikes and haven't looked back. I know Nay has to like sitting on the back but also what percentage of your riding will she be with you? Also, start doing push ups and squats because these things take some muscling around!

I tried a T700, but wasn't as impressed as much as I thought I would be. I think price is a factor. We can still get brand new DR650s in Canada and the T700 is more than twice the price (CA$14,500 vs CA$7,000 for the DR). It's definitely an upgrade, but not nearly enough of an upgrade to make me want to trade in my DR.

The DR650 is right in the middle and a true 50/50 dual sport. The only problem is that it's not great on the HWY and not great in the tight stuff. The KTM690 would be the modern DR650 but reliability of the KTM is the concern. You need to work out what you will do 80% of the time and suck it up for the other 20%.

The elusive unicorn does it exists ? For me personally it's horses for courses . I'm happy with the Dr for now, it ticks my boxes , however in hard single trail action or even a challenging trail it's like riding around on a house brick , a smaller lighter bike would do a much better job. But then I have to slab it home 500kms that's where those big twins with the extra gears would come in handy . Then there's the weight factor , so many options and opinions out there mate . Your decision you're choice . But choose wisely 😉

I had to stop and help a bloke pick up his t7 a few weeks ago it was his second drop in a few hundred meters.
It was too top heavy for him to pick up alone second time.
They feel very top heavy on their side.

I wonder if he was pretty tired or just weak in general? (not trying to be mean at all.) I’ve dropped one a few times in the same day and each time it was a breeze. It’s heavy but not that heavy to need help. I like the 701 better too.

First off this is a good video and I enjoyed it.
I own a XT 225,DR650,T7 and CRF1100L. Selling the T7. It is closer to the Africa Twin than a DR650 . I also own a MT07 so that and loving the AT more than the T7 for my Adventure Touring bike. Now if I did not own a AT I would probably be keeping the T7. I made it a nice Adv bike with touring amenities but it does not have the magic button. The T7 has a nice sound with slip on but rather the 700 motor in a MT07

I think a major issue is that you can drop a dr650 and not feel too bad about it. A used dr650 isnt worth much so you dont feel too bad pushing yourself or the bike. Id cry dropping a t700.

I am only 65 kg, but 5 11 with a 33 inch inseam (heel to groin), I have a licence killer MT09SP and need to tone it down a bit.
In boots I can just flat foot the T7 , not sure if this is enough for a top heavy bike in the tight/dabbly stuff, are your legs much longer?

  • @darrylpaterick3108

In the same mindset myself. Want something better on the highway and for two up, than my current DR. If I sell the Dr, and only have one bike (most likely), I would lean towards the T7. Having the option of 2 motorcycles in the garage makes for a harder decision.

I'm eagerly waiting for the Transalp. Never a replacement for the DR, but an addition. Actually, I'm looking to replace my VFR800 for a more adventure spec on road bike. The Africa Twin fits the bill....but $19k USD? The NC750X looks like a smooth middle weight at a very affordable price.

One ride will convince you , it’s a instant classic & Yamaha got the front / rear weight balance perfectly.. two up sitting on 130/140 Ks is fine.. doubling someone on any bike will kill the vibe somewhat , it will do it fine but won’t be as plush two up as that cruiser.

Supposedly, Suzuki is working on a new parallel twin to compete with the T7. Really curious to see what they come up with.

$2500 US for an old R1100GS. Two up with a full camp. Throw on some big block tires and you cannot go wrong. ABS and FI. No other frills. Now having said that. I have that and a DR and you cannot beat the big thumpers XR/DR for that fun lightweight grunt and shuffle!

Have a Dr in the garage. Great commuter bike, decent off road, sucks on the highway. Interested in the T7. More power, 6th gear, fuel injection, not too much electronic crap. Wish it carried fuel low like the KTM 790/890 and an aluminum frame would knock off a few pounds but overall might suit me.

@@BikerBits Thanks for the response. I am older (67) and haven't been riding in a long time and I am trying to decide on a bike for me. Currently looking at DR650 and KLX300 and leaning towards the DR650 since I probably shouldn't really be trying to do anything too hard anymore. I am in Las Vegas now, retired, and looking to enjoy some scenery and some desert roads maybe. I am probably 'dreaming' though about it. But may get a bike and try it anyway!

A DR can be fine for slabbing 2up with luggage. It helps if you're not big people, and if you do some ergo, power, and suspension mods. It's never going to be a Goldwing though.
I added touring pegs, pivoting bar-risers, Seat Concepts foam, lowering brackets for the passenger pegs, and a ButtyBuddy. I have upgraded suspension, 14/41 sprockets, and sorted carbing.

I don't know if this helps or not lol. Consider what the primary use of the bike is as in mainly tarmac, dirt roads etc then add into what you want it to do other than that. Light weight bikes are for the gnarly stuff, heavy weights for touring etc. Each bike type does 1 thing very well and with a little tweaking can achieve good results in others. So it's back to the primary use, right? A tough decision Mark. (Although I do feel your love for the AT my friend lol). take care. Oh yes any news regarding those nasty shiny bums at parks?

even tho the T7 is only a 700 i bet it goes way harder than a dr650 and just does everything better than a DR so imo it's a huge leap forward from a DR. i know id be more than happy with one. AT is too big n heavy imo. im forever watching people drop and struggle the big bikes but each to their own, some people can handle the big bikes really well.

Two people AT for sure .....I love it, so does wife so having two people around could eliminate the problems of picking it up when you drop it. Dirt is not a place for two up riding unless it smooth offroad period, you can tell yourself whatever you want but the back seat sucks off-roading. You should try and talk wife into getting her own bike. My wife occasionally rides with me but, NEVER offroad. Now..... we are....both over 65. The AT weight is a real issue for me.

  • @jimc778
    @jimc778 3 ปีที่แล้ว

The unicorn doesn’t exist! The KLR’s come close but the weight is tough in rough terrain. The Honda 300 rally is pretty close to what you are looking for but not sure about the long highway halls with an extra rider. Still the DR650 is a tank and you will always be able to get parts!

I have a KTM 790 S and it’s not a two up bike. Not enough motor for two in my opinion for average middle age people two up. Unless of course your wife weighs less than 125 lbs. I had a DR and have a KTM690 now. Those bikes are totally different than the heavy twins. I say keep the DR and strip it down for honest dual sporting. Then get the T7 and load it up with bags etc for when your trip requires more distance.
