  • Time for an ignition switch and lock cylinder. Key was worn, binding etc.. and door chime would chime always leading to a switch issue. Will it go smoothly?....

Hey! Thank you for sharing this! For me it will be super helpful, as someone tried to steal my car and damaged that unit... Now here is the question: How is that "bearing press clamp tool thingy" called? It seems it would be important for the job... :)

Hi I'm about to do this next week, I bought a new housing, lock cylinder, and switch. so when it comes off, is it fairly easy to put back on? just slide it on? and do you think all golfs have the 2 bolts holding the column in? i briefly glanced at mine, and they looked like rounded bolts that cannot be undone, maybe i'm wrong.

And i'm talking about the piece that you pulled off with the puller

@@markochrenst801 what ended up happening is, instead of doing this whole job because my steering column felt loose, a company called custom fab created a pedal stiffener, which makes the whole column stay in position so I didn’t do this yet, maybe when my ignition fails

Why are you pulling that? No one else did

In my 1991 MK2 I left the switch hold down screw off. I also broke off the hold down tab used to attach the switch. My steering wheel has height adjustment so I move it all of the way down for room to work. Now I unclip the wiring harness by squeezing the tabs. The switch just pulls out. The wiring harness connector holds on to the aluminum housing thereby holding the switch in. I keep a spare switch on hand. The removal of the hold down tab may contribute to earlier failure, but I can replace it in 5 minutes. The spare is in the trunk. In order to hold the switch and connector a little more firmly, I put a tie wrap around the base of the multi connector and the aluminum housing near the lock cylinder. It feels a lot better, holding both the connector and the switch firmly in place.

This will eliminate removing the steering wheel when the switch breaks again. I also use a steering wheel lock to increase anti-theft.
