    The light pollution facts are so depressing, and being an American (and not one of the lucky ones), I have *never* seen the Milky Way with my own eyes, even though I'm an amateur astronomer.
    And the thing is, I'm almost 25 now, and a true dark sky has never been available to me-but I'm a person who's at least _aware_ of what I'm missing because of my science-minded path in life. And as Fraser mentioned, 80% of all Americans can't see our own galaxy in their sky, so what troubles me more than literally anything else is thinking about _just how many_ millions and millions of people here, ESPECIALLY young people, don't even have a basic sense of what they're missing.
    That only adds to the dread this story gives me because it's like, if you don't know there's a problem, and you never hear that something is being _progressively, and _not even gradually_ taken away from you (none of the most consumed media in America is going to tell anyone, I can 100% promise you that), how can you possibly stop it?
    All I know though, as someone who does understand the night sky's overwhelming importance to humanity, and the part it played and continues to play in the development of human beings, is that I damn well need to get involved. Period.
    Thanks, Fraser.

      I grew up in a small town in Alaska where there is no light pollution to block the views. Now I live in a small city about 80 miles away. Every time I go back home to recreate I’m blown away by how much more visible the stars and milky way are there.

    • @sciencecompliance235
      @sciencecompliance235 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that it is depressing, but, at least in cities, it is a somewhat complex problem. Lighting at night in cities helps keep people safe from crime and drivers more aware of their surroundings. Whatever solution is proposed to this problem needs to take these factors into account.

    • @GamingXperience
      @GamingXperience ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@sciencecompliance235 Well, like Fraser said, its not that hard, point it at where its needed, and not just everywhere.
      Look at all the lighting on buildings that just goes everywhere, or the spotlights that are pointed upwards towards buildings, or just directly into the sky.
      The lights that are pointed at the ground like streetlights are the smallest problem.

    • @bobbyg9587
      @bobbyg9587 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm old enough to remember DSCH when I was a kid...Dark Skies for Comet Halley. Fred was saying these things decades ago...could we please just use lights only when we need them, and shine them only where they are needed?

    • @sciencecompliance235
      @sciencecompliance235 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GamingXperience That's not exactly true, though. The lights pointed toward the ground reflect off the ground and illuminate the atmosphere. Also, some amount of lights are needed on buildings for aircraft, and I don't see how you can mandate the removal of all decorative lighting.

    Wow !!!!!! I am super stoked that finally, FINALLY ! NASA are going to test a nuclear thermal rocket ! this is so long over due, but it is the start of serious propulsion systems, and it will, undoubtedly, impress us all and of course demonstrate that our solar system is within reach in months and not years ! I can't wait to see this thing go !

    I miss the good ole days of being able to see the Milky Way. I used to go camping for a week at a time in Henderson TX. I remember waking up at various times during the night and seeing that the Milky Way had moved. It got to where I always knew what time it was at night just from where the stars were. If I win the lottery tonight, I'm going to buy or build a home in the middle of nowhere so I can shoot my bow and look at the stars. For example with the light pollution part of the video.. here in Las Vegas we have the Luxor, which is the pyramid building on the strip pointing an incredibly bright beam into space for no reason. Light pollution is a MAJOR problem in Vegas and the stupid Luxor makes it even worse. No reason for it whatsoever. We should be trying to get the casino to remove it.

    The last segment on light pollution and LEDs is an example of Jevons Paradox, where an increase in efficiency should lead to less energy usage, but instead the energy savings create an increase in demand. This phenomenon is one reason why I and others have concerns about humanity gaining access to a cheap, abundant source of energy.

  • @Grim_and_Proper

    I'm assuming that the RTG design improvement is in components other than the source? I can't imagine there being much room for improvement of the source's size since it is already a dense chunk of material and its casing is meant to survive re-entry without burning up or breaking.
    That would mean that the bulk of the newly designed RTG is going to be the source with the remainder being impressively miniaturized.

I own an 8" Newtonion reflector telescope, however I can just walk outside and see quite a lot. I live on 4 acres next to, "The Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge," and "Fort Sill milatary base," (Oklahoma) Which is the largest field Artillery range in the world. That is why there is no light pollution here, except for Lawton, Chickasha, and Duncan, which have a small glow on the horizon. Even when I lived in the Rocky Mountains, in Durango, CO. there was too much light, unless I drove two hours away from Durango. Durango was not a no fly zone either, so planes were everywhere!!! Last night the differential and integral really struck: We "are" somewhere, we can "see" velocity, we can "feel" acceleration and "experience" the change in acceleration. To know about acceleration you need to experience, to know about speed you have to feel and to know about position you have to see. Then why do we have to be?

    Suppose the ISS adds a module that's a big room, a sphere for arguments sake, and you somehow found yourself in the very middle of the room with zero velocity in any direction. The walls are let's say 5m away from you in each direction. In this scenario, could you swim through he air and actually escape or would you be stuck in the middle since every action you make has an opposite reaction.
    Would this be any different if you were floating outside in the middle space, if you could not eject material, would you just be forever stuck in the same spot/orbit? Thoughts?

    In the 1970's a couple of companies experimented with putting nuclear batteries in pacemakers. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_battery#Pacemakers

    People have always been comfortable taking nuclear to space and off the planet 🌎 the narrative is skewed because of space nuclear treaties otherwise nuclear space propulsion is a misnomer for space based weapons

      @Tom's Cubes & Games Yeah I'm not sure what goes into making somthing human rated but I would hope they had a successful landing streak of 10+ on earth and maybe two landings on the moon before trying to land on the moon with people.
      Then again I doubt they did that for the original moon landings, so.. spooky.

    North Korea isn't polluting the night sky, but seriously. we should consider developing best practices for exterior lighting. Otherwise we'll get mandates

    Just watching a question show from feb 11, 2022 and it made me wonder if you think Hubble will be replaced. Would it not benefit us to have another newer version up there?

    • @spartanatreyu
      @spartanatreyu ปีที่แล้ว

      We already have newer "versions" up there. We will still want to use the Hubble as long as we can though, it's still useful.

    "Significantly, the lighting has been found to disrupt insects' reproduction. Researchers believe street lights deter nocturnal moths from laying their eggs and put insects at risk of being found and eaten by predators, such as bats.n26 Aug 2021". Light pollution is a big problem for the animal world as well.

    Since Webb keeps messing up the establishment theories, I think there are very good reasons why Webb keeps having problems... the findings will cost the scientists lots of funding.

      Ps. that asteroid that passed Earth, not concerned about atmosphere, but rather the movie gravity. One cascading explosion of satellites. We'd go dark world wide.

      You don't have to worry about gravitational waves, they're stupendously weaj. We'd be shot out of the Solar System by an astronomically unlucky passby of a black hole before we'd have to worry about that.

    Question: How does Venus retain an atmosphere if it has no magnetic field?

    • @frasercain
      @frasercain  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Carbon dioxide is denser than air so it sinks down and resists being blown off into space, but all the water was broken up and the light hydrogen was stripped away. Venus is bone dry.

    • @sciencecompliance235
      @sciencecompliance235 ปีที่แล้ว

      That seems like an obvious thing that should be regulated. Night lighting is unfortunately necessary for certain reasons, though, so it's not going away completely anytime soon. I'm hoping that tools like AI and advanced, ubiquitous sensors can help reduce the amount lighting used only to that which is necessary. I do think regulations (that are actually enforced) will be necessary, too, unfortunately.

      A temporary beam that only goes off sometimes is the wrong target for sure. The problem's gotta mostly be streetlights.
