A quick math check. 14.000.000 km2 x 1.6 km thick ice is 22.400.000 km3 of ice Converted to water that yields 20.608.000 km3 of water Spread over a total area of 361.000.000 km2 of ocean water, that gives an increase in sea level of 57 metres. It makes me a bit sad to notice that it's implied that, after the melting of the Antarctica, the land would be furiously drilled for oil and shit and the nice penguins would be eaten...
I saw a video of a newly discovered ecosystem that's separated from the ocean but abundant with life in the water under the ice. The oxygen levels are extremely high in these waters creating extra large forms of isopods and crabs, starfish. I'm hoping more exploration footage comes out of this unique ecosystem that is in this otherwise plain area. Oh and besides penguins don't forget leopard seals that hunt the penguins. They are fierce predators
I'm pretty sure they taste awful anyway. I found this quote from an antarctic expedition: “If it’s possible to imagine a piece of beef, odiferous cod fish and a canvas-backed duck roasted together in a pot, with blood and cod-liver oil for sauce, the illustration would be complete.”

The UN is toothless by design. The UN is principally tolerated because it acts as a mouthpiece for legitimising regime change wars.

essentially if water covered more of the earth - which would happen in this case - the sun would be able to cause more evaporation, thus causing stronger more violent rain storms/ Hurricanes. However, because Antarctica is still at the pole it would probably still refreeze over time, but much smaller.
Yes! At least every map claims this. The dark green areas of the map are tricky because if Antarctica melted, so would likely a lot of greenland and the arctic sea ice, so it's hard to constrain the map to just Antarctica melting, but that is what it should look like.

Because introducing foreign species into a unique ecosystem is TOTALLY a great idea. Is good because whats wrong with seeing rabbits breeding to the point where they eat all the vegetation and most of them die of starvation because they ate all the food, to destroy the said ecosystem because something ate all the eggs. Its a very great idea! (Sarcasm)
Central Antarctica would not have a proper established ecosystem anyway (Depending on how rapidly the melting and/or 'Isostatic Rebounding' were to take place in this scenario. If this were to happen very rapidly, it would be in humanities best interest to introduce species to this barren environment in order to create a place where we could survive. I'm not saying this would go well, and who knows if there would be any of these species left, but that doesn't mean it's a "bad idea". Edit: So I thought I would do a quick (And by quick I mean about 5 minutes and only a few links), I see people suggesting vastly varying suggestions on how long it will take factoring in raising temperatures and other variables. And even with rising temperatures this would take a fairly long time it would seem. Going for the middle suggestions of about 10,000 years, then over that time, life will have likely begun to lay its roots, so to speak, in these new areas of land that would be emerging. And assuming Humanity as we know it is still around by this point (Keeping in mind we only began to develop Agriculture 10,00 years ago so it's a hell of a long time), then, yes, introducing species would be harmful. Also this ecosystem is likely going to be populated by species that migrate from other places in the world due to the changing climate... which isn't actually a point against anything, I now realise, but is simply a neat thing to think about..
@@jordanf9257 I am from Australia. we have a unique variety of fauna here and many of these are suffering greatly due to the incursion of introduced species. The implication of the comments above is that when humans have introduced species to new lands it is done for selfish and/or stupid reasons, and always devastates the native ecosystem. In this context it would be both selfish/stupid and devastating to introduce predators to a continent with no native land-dwelling predators in it's current state. And it would be human.
@@maggsgorilla I'm mean from Australia too 👋 So I understand what you're saying and completely agree. I was just playing devils advocate since the assumption in the video (or at least what I got from it) was that this happens in a relatively short amount of time and that there would be no native ecosystem due to the land having only just being revealed (This obviously isn't entirely true, as the coasts and surrounding waters would still have their ecosystems (assuming they haven't been too disrupted due to the hypothetical scenario), and obviously some animals might migrate in land but even so there would yet to be any stability there).
Though even if my presumption of there initially being No Existing Ecosystem were true, then the introduction of species to try to artificially create one or jump start one, would be an incredibly risky and unpredictable decision. The Jurassic Park Novel is pretty much a perfect counter argument to doing this, but if Humanity was running out of other options, then that's where these hypothetical people could find justification in it. But quite a few assumptions have to be made for all of this.
The ice in the north pole is melting, but the ice in Antarctica is actually growing. This is mainly due to the fact that the northern arctic is predominantly situated over water-which is gradually warming, while the Antarctic ice is mostly situated over a dry continental shelf which is a desirable place for ice growth.
The one thing that this video didn't really touch on all that much that I think would drastically affect the continent is the changing global temperatures as a result of the losing all that ice cover. Since ice and snow have a high albedo (light reflectivity) these surfaces reflect an enormous amount of light energy that would otherwise strike the earth and be absorbed as heat energy, and since more snow means more reflection taking away an entire continent worth of glaciers would mean that the global temperatures are going to astronomically increase. I feel this video assumes Antarctica would become a tundra climate based solely on its geographic location at the southern tip of the world without considering the global temperature increase. Maybe the continent's soil would be garbage immediately after the snow melts, but given a couple thousands of years, desertification of regions along the equator, and societal devastation along the current coasts? I think Antarctica would become one of the few nutrient rich continents left on the planet with every nation fighting for control over it
@ Da Beast From Da Antartica: So the solar energy reflected by the white ice - exactly how does it escape the atmosphere? I can see how the ground would be warmer (obviously the ice is gone), but if I understand your point the energy never reaches the earth because it is "reflected". Since it is radiant energy I don't follow. Please explain.
@@1badtubeman Reflected light escapes the atmosphere in much the same way as it entered. Some light is absorbed by particles in the air during the trip in each direction, but not very much. A much larger proportion of the energy from the light (and thus, the eventual heat it will become), is determined by what it hits when it reaches the ground. Objects that are very reflective reflect much of the light they receive, so it bounces back out. We generally see such objects as being white, because that's what we see when you combine all the visible wavelengths our eyes are sensitive to. Some of the light energy that reflects off of objects on the ground will be reflected back again by the atmosphere or absorbed by atmospheric particles, but much of it will actually just pass back out into space. The darker the ground cover is, the more light it absorbs, and thus the more sunlight becomes heat. Water ice can be fairly reflective, by comparison, so worlds covered in ice actually absorb much less heat overall, and ice cover on Earth is helpful in reducing the overall heat absorbed from sunlight. As the world becomes warmer on average, there will be less ice, and thus darker ground cover will absorb more energy from sunlight, leading to an increase in the amount of heat in the system. It's one of many vicious feedback effects in climate change.

smh
Instead of the Great Emu War, it would be the Great Penguin War.
Australia would lose that too. Twice
We could move foreign animals there because that never goes bad. They will just live alongside the penguin and sing songs together...... dumb
Bad Guys...
U are probably the best thing on the internet. Thank u for sharing.
The ice in the north pole is melting, but the ice in Antarctica is actually growing. This is mainly due to the fact that the northern arctic is predominantly situated over water-which is gradually warming, while the Antarctic ice is mostly situated over a dry continental shelf which is a desirable place for ice growth.
no dumb*ss, it's because of the circumpolar current in antarctica
The ice at the north pole is not melting. Thicker than ever.
@@SaxonSuccess Nice tinfoil hat!
