Today we will be studying Item number SCP-769: Ancient Encyclopedia, Object class: Safe.
SCP-769 is a cup 10 cm tall and 12 cm across. It is made of pottery with a golden glaze. It is covered with a white residue. Several preserved parts from cephalopods and other sea creatures are stuck in the residue.
When a subject drinks from the cup (or water that has been poured from the cup), new information is written directly into the subject's brain. However, they lose memories they already possess, much like a computer's storage being overwritten. The memories lost are unpredictable, though usually comparable to the information gained. All water from the bowl must be drunk, or else the subject gains fragmented, unreliable information.

Yeah, it actually had a lot of emotion and meaning to it. The SCP itself seemed simple, but then the author pretty much turned the addendums into a critique of the entire foundation.
To the animals seeking means to kill that they fear, this was just noise.
Remarkable and profound? .. No, a waste of breath instead. Paraphrased as "You are going to die and all you do is fight against the loss of everything you love", Damn straight we do .. "Rage against the dieing of the light" .. To lay down and wait to die is the only other option, unacceptable.
"Lesson complete." this time, sounded more fitting than any other times.
Sounds like this SCP has a mnemonic info hazard built in by the last log.
Well losing parts of yourself to be filled with alien understandings...how is that not an info hazard? The last log was just the D class experiencing profound clarity about his situation as granted by what he learned. He gained wisdom, but at a terrible cost. Funny thing is he is right. The Foundation most likely did not learn from this wisdom and is quite doomed.
Does that mean only upon hearing it, it becomes self-fulfilling, or just like it's just existential dread inducing and unactionable, so it's a hazzard to know about.
That D class monologue at the end was beautiful....an indictment of classicism and the criminal justice system in our nation. We all bear a responsibility for anyone that dies imprisoned or in police custody.
SCP 769 is a great historical results should be all archive. In order to get the mind frame of how the technology works, we must learn what state of mind leads to the technology in question. Otherwise, you'll have big holes in how it functions. You'll be surprised how many things are hidden in the everyday.

A bio crystallized fossil data port! Now there is something that is only in sci-fi writings and is hinted about by ancient astronaut theorists. If the cup they currently have only has cultural information, is a good bet that there is a cup out there with genetic and military based information that they're looking for. Time capsule are curious things, they can tell you of the world that came before.

As bleak as the last log is. Know that the SCP verse is never certain. The foundation has many SCPs that claim in what will happen to the world. Some claim paradise, others its destruction. I don't know how the SCP verse will end, only that I know it's a base of uncertainty. This is.... The only light of hope one can have. I'm Sorry.

"Monthly termination" has been a rather controversial trophe amongst SCP writers. New ( and by that I mean since series 3) articles does no longer make reference to it. There's even an SCP written to explain it as effect of an anomaly. Me, personally, don't see why would such a proficient and thorough organization, in which some pencil pusher tried cutting corner with containment of The Deer, would be regularly wasting a limited resource like that. Luckily, the current "main" cannon is that the Foundation wouldn't waste a life for less than a just cause.

Yeah it's been interesting seeing how the SCP wiki has evolved. Back when these entries were made the foundation was more of a morally dark grey entity. Dead set on maintaining normalcy by any means, and more than willing to push the boundaries if they believed it would further their goals even a little bit. Heck there was a whole 001 proposal explaining why the foundation used to be that way and I think that's super neat
This was a good story--a little (imo) heavy-handed by the author, but the setup was good. I like a little more ambuguity and less insert-self-pov, so I think it would have been really cool to have the monologue inserted in the middle. Other than that, big thumbs up to whoever wrote this one.

I was wondering why liquids other than milk weren't tried.
Milk was a bad choice because first, humans haven't been drinking it as adults until relatively recently and second, I get the impression that the redacted civilization may not have been human and finally, what kind of milk did they use?
Red wine or olive oil or almost any other organic liquid a human can digest should have been tried, modulo information gained on the dietary habits of the redacted civilization.
