And how hard does Mr. Thapar try to get something from Prof. Damodaran that would put the govt. and Mr. Adani down. Prof. Damodaran subtly and so eloquently established his class much above the lesser agenda of this interview!! But the fact that WIRE chose to bring this expert for an interview, is in itself applause-worthy. Thank you WIRE team!

The 'con' here is the 38 odd shell companies with equity positions in Adani companies, to allow the Adani group to stay within the SEBI limit of 75% ownership - whilst in reality leaving the real float (v. the implied float) to well below 25%, perhaps even as low as 10 to 15%. As the investors (retail & institutional) - both domestic and foreign - got suckered into the stocks of these half-dozen odd Adani group companies, small demand would magnify to a hugely disproportionate increase in share price, leading to the momentum buying and feeding frenzy.
The survival of the Adani group - given the assets and their favored status as operator of many infra projects in India - is perhaps less at threat; it's rather their ability to continue to borrow and finance their growth with cheap money - is at risk now. This will then manifest in their equity valuations coming down to the more traditional P/E multiples (more like 15-20 v. 300-500) - again, making short-sellers like Hindenburg boatload of money on their short bets (assuming their holdings are some derivatives of Sensex/Nifty traded shares of Adani.

Good Point ....BUT : I am of the fervent belief that REAL CON is :
Our Public Sector Banks / Undertakings ( Like LIC with exposure of Rs 40K CRORE to the ADANI Group ) that RUTHLESSLY & MERCILESSLY ABUSE PUBLIC Funds - and there are NUMEROUS Near Recent Examples too .....Just My Humble Opinion

    • @sagarpal5746

Your analysis is absolutely spot on. Even if you look at the daily/weekly price movements of Adani companies during the past 2-3 years from a statistical point of view (from a quant trading perspective), it resembled a penny stock run by promoters and front runners rather than a well reputed mammoth conglomerate.

    Hello Karan!
Great interview with Dr. Damodaran who kicked the Indian Company Investors & Adani Groups in the belly:
"Greed will always triumph and Failure & Success will come & go more frequently. Take Risk and Play the Game as long as possible and finally get kicked in the belly."
And as he said it right "You just can't handle the TRUTH"!
As a Short Seller, Hindenburg was very HONEST and OPEN with his Analysis and Conclusion.
    So, Who failed?
Narendra Modi and his close friend Gautham Adani and the symbiosis these two have had for the past 10 years or so. What should happen from now on?
Indian Opposition Parties must keep talking about Modi & Adani Affairs till the end of Apr 2024 National Election and work for a clean up at the Prime Minister's Office.
RSS must think hard whether to field Modi as the PM candidate in the next year's Election, as a Third Term Candidate.
Short Sellers must run down the share price of Adani Companies to the Prestige of Penny Stocks!
Indian Economy is indeed very soft. We have to remind Dr. Damodharan that the Average Indian's Private Final Consumption Expenditure (aka the Take Home INCOME) is Rs. 330 per day (Per Capita Per Day) when the price of a 2000 calorie 3 meals cost Rs. 250 in 2023. How much money is left for housing, clothing, medical costs, transportation etc etc?
By sheer Population of largely unskilled 1400 million Population, India has $ 3 Trillion GDP. This figure in itself does not say much about the robustness of Indian Economy!
Foreign Investors must understand the Three Trillion Dollar Indian Economy more deeply before they invest in it.
Adani Saga has done something good: At least hereafter Foreigners will look harder at Indian Companies and their business fundamentals before investing.
    Wait & Watch!

My friend who is doing PhD in Banaras Hindu university is being harassed often by some professors who are Hindu, high caste because his topic is on Dalit literature, trauma theory. They pick every opportunity to pick on him personally and try to break him internally, oppress him, demotivate him. They traumatize him. It even troubles me and my friends when he told us about the incident so imagine how much damage it has done to his mind. Hello everyone plz go through this message. I have to say something.
How can I help?

Good Point .....BUT that happened very far into the success story of Korea ( The Early 2000s and ongoing particularly with the SAMSUNG Group ). The 'Chaebols' - which still exist there are doing quite well too. SADLY, The Indian Version of the 'Chaebol' ( For want of a better description ) will NEVER EVER Change as long as Our Public Sector Banks / Undertakings ( Like LIC with exposure of Rs 40K CRORE to the ADANI Group ) that RUTHLESSLY & MERCILESSLY ABUSE PUBLIC Funds by INDULGING the WHIMS of Our 'Honourable ' Netas whose agendas are driven entirely by megalomaniacal and monetary objectives. The BEAUTY in all of this is : The 5th Largest Economy with the Largest Demographic Dividend can AFFORD such for the Next TWO Decades - at least. As Prof Damodaran stated : " It is a marriage made in HEAVEN " - So VERY TRUE

Unless, this crony capitalism is removed from our Public affairs, we wil be no better than our neighbours in the subcontinent. Hindenberg is 'code red' for our Stick markets, Regulatory agencies and above all our ' Neta log'.

What did I gather is to remain honest clean sacrosanct gentleman' thirsty for following rules only and always be on high principles and clear morality .But to have all of them in our prayers ,we must set up an example which can be seen in realty as to condemn penalise and correct all those who don't have the above thus adani's mystery must be opened solved and corrected as an glaring example for others to follow.

No illegality has been pointed out as yet, and the government has no actionable item on its table for this "fiasco" which hasn't even stopped operations of the Adani group. They have paid all the interest on time too.
They're hardly anywhere near the scale of collusion the CCP has with its enterprises - using its business houses as tactical weapons to hurt other countries too! India has a lot to learn from them, and we won't learn those big tricks, thank God!
