    WOW!! Thank you so much Sue Martin. I have never heard anyone say that the outside leg needs to be behind the girth during the canter. I have always used the outside leg to get the canter started and put it back in "normal" position after the depart. This may actually explain some things. Thanks again.

      Yes! It is especially important with horses that know the flying changes or Tempi changes

    Hi Amelia,
    I have a little problem with my horse in the transition back to trot after canter...
    She is very strong on the bit after the transition when she is in trot.
    I was looking on TH-cam and there is not 1 video for this problem, I thought maybe you can make one😄

      Circling in the trot after the canter will get them off your hands and naturally help them slow and collect. The horse I ride sometimes gets rushed and heavy in trot after cantering, and 10m circles help to get her back to normal. Also, making sure you're not using both hands at the same time in the same way to ask her to slow, because that just makes them brace and get heavier. Your inside hand should be asking for the flexion and your outside hand squeezes and releases to support them through the bend and to help moderate her speed.

    Hi Amelia, I wondered if you would help me. I really REALLY struggle bringing my horse back after trot or canter. She transitions beautifully into both, however she is a 17.3hh Belgium Warmblood who is built like a machine and is so incredibly strong. Her bit she is in is the waterford dutch gag (snaffle ring) and she goes nicely in it so I don't really want to get her a stronger bit realistically, but when trotting she gets faster and faster. I have tried half halt and a stronger half halt, and engaging my core and rising slower but really when your horse is trotting almost out of control these things in an ideal world is so so hard to do. I have heard you say many time that you shouldn't pull your horse to stop them, and actually the more you pull, the faster they go. Well I totally get where you're coming from but not pulling on your horses who are beautifully trained (and don't run away with you in the same way) is much much easier but it just doesnt work. Please can you give me some pointers. I have tried bringing her back as soon as she gets too fast and then going back into trot, but the bringing back takes half the school sometimes. She is just incredibly strong, incredibly forward going and very very sensitive. When I ride her in trot I put my inside leg on which brings her rounder, but that makes her faster even though I collect the energy with my outside rein. Is it just about pulling up ugly in the beginning and being much more forceful with her to tell her that running away is not acceptable and hoping that the uncomfortable feeling of being pulled up sharply will over time dissipate because its not a nice feeling for her. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you xx

      Try bending and turning onto a very small circle until she slows down. That way you won't have to get so strong.

    My horse, an OTTB has trouble picking up the left lead which is odd for an ex racehorse. A lot of emphasis was put on how I was asking him to pick it up. I'm not a professional but I've been riding for going on 20 years so I'm pretty sure I know how to pick up a canter. Took my horse to the chiropractor (his vet) and found out it is weakness in him that contributes to the physical inability to pick up the left lead canter. Strength training and stretching is in order, nothing serious. But also something to consider if having trouble with leads.

Question: At the very end when you are coming to a halt, I see your hands raise and give a rein cue to halt, at least that's what I see. Can you expand on that for me? Is it because your horse is young and you are reinforcing the halt? Thanks again. :)

    It's interesting how terminology can be so different for the different disciplines of horsemanship. On the bit for to me means to ask for a soft feel. Although the horse's head set is a little different, for dressage, the idea is the same. My mentor would say to ask for a soft feel before making a transition. If the horse made the transition, say from a trot to the canter, but it's head came up, he would say well the operation was successful but the patient died. The point is that that no matter the discipline, the soft feel or on the bit is an important piece to have working. Its something I have to work hard at with my thoroughbred, getting her soft without pushing her into hardness.

    Rider needs to strengthen her legs. Way too much leg movement all over the place. Equitation ♡quiet hands and quiet legs make a quiet efficient rider.
