Initially when I set up my first tank I was torn between nerite and mystery snails, but then I had a hitchhiker bladder snail on one of my plants. I was debating removing it but it’s a strangely delightful little critter. They’re so much fun to watch float around and defy gravity 😊

    • @cathyhendrix7552

I love my bladder snails. They do an excellent job keeping the tank clean. They even eat fish 💩 poop. I prefer the bladder snail over the pond snails. But with either, they keep me from having to vacuum the tank so much. I know they breed like rabbits, so when I get to many, I just scoop a bunch of them up and put them in the creek out back. They earn their keep!!!

I had purchased a Chinese algae eaters many years ago for my betta aquarium. The pet store person said it would be fine. Like you said, as they mature, they no longer eat algae and become more of a scavenger fish. They also crave protein. To my horror one morning, I found it had taken a huge chunk off the side of my betta fish! That Chinese algae eater was re-homed immediately! I treated my betta with aquarium salt and he did heal and lived out his full life.

Wow! First channel that I've seen who talk about piranhas as 'just a fish' (since that's what they are) and not something weird to own. They are gorgeous fish with very nice colors. I did not keep mine in a school because only one made it to adulthood - got tired of spending so much for 'friends' that he thought was dinner. My guy was super simple to keep (considering I - and few others - knew anything about fish back then, in the 70s). He was very friendly - knew me well - and never skittish of family. As you say, they tend to get lazy as they age - so even keeping him all his life in a 20 gallon tank suited him fine. He just hung around until he got hungry for the feeder fish he had with him to eat when he felt like it. He survived 3 moves and died at 15 years old.

Just a warning to folks Silver dollars can get really really skittish as well if they feel cramped. I actually have a relative of the Filamatosis barb and that is the Rohani tear drop barb. Probably my favorite fish I own.

Thank you for this video. Fortunately I am usually pretty good at not impulse buying at the pet store, and have avoided a lot of these fish, but when you see them so small and cute you almost got suckered in. The only 'mistake' I would say I made was buying tiger barbs. I bought a large school of about 15 for my 75 gallon, and they were model tank mates for the first year, then as they got older it has turned into a constant struggle. 1 by one they pick on the weakest link until they kill them. It's impossible to catch them too in a densely planted tank with other tank mates. When I rescape in the spring, I'll try to fish them out. It's so unfortunate because I really love their activity levels and they are beautiful but I couldn't recommend them. I also have had 9 gold barbs and they are very peaceful in my tank (although they eat like little pigs). Just wanted to post my experience on a fish that is commonly sold, and you might want to think twice on. Your mileage may vary. Hope you two have a great New Year. Take care.

Totally agree with all the replacement fish. I didn't find piranhas particularly difficult to care for but I was surprised how easily spooked they were. Buy a heater guard and watch sharp decor they will eventually run into everything in the tank at full speed. As far as electric blue jack Dempsey most of them in the hobby unfortunately have terrible genetics. I did not have any success until I found a dedicated knowledgeable breeder. If you ever want to raise some to their full potential I can point you towards a good source. I have never lost a single eb from a good breeder

Love the replacement series! And by the way happy Monday 🥰
I have tried so many fish over the years without knowing behaviors or the sizes they get, so thank you for bringing us some better alternatives!!
I have been wanting German blue Rams but have been afraid that maybe I couldn't keep my parameters and tank temperature perfectly.. I honestly thought that the Bolivian Rams were the same? So a ram is a ram is a ram but not necessarily 🤣 That is amazing and I think they are a beautiful choice!
I'm glad I haven't gone through the piranha stage yet 🤣 Although I have had silver dollars years ago I'm going to go with the junior version of the piranha.. the white skirt tetra 🤣 I believe that will be as close as I'm going to get 🤣
I remember the days of having Chinese algae eaters too I've always loved the golden ones and didn't realize until recently how they can be fishy jerks 🤣 bristlenose for the win 💪
On a different subject and speaking of plecos someone has offered to send me some snowball plecos and I'm kind of excited about that ♥️
I'm going to have to see if you have a species profile about them to check it out!
I hope you all have a wonderful and blessed Monday and thank you so much for the video!!🙏🌿🐟🌿♥️😁

Another option for next time you guys make a video of this series would be a molly/platty vs a goldfish. Similar colors, tons of personality and much smaller. My son wanted a gold fish so I got him a sunburst platty, and a silver molly. They're super friendly and he loves them so much and he always reminds me to feed his fishies breakfast and dinner.

Several months back I put four Electric Blue Jack Dempseys in my planted 125. They were about 1/2 at purchase. I selected two light blue ones and two dark blue. The dark blue grow much faster they are now a little over three inches the others about half. They are aggressive eaters to say the least. I also had about ten three to four inch Tilapia in that tank. The survivors had to be removed. Really beautiful fish but off the chart crazy when feeding

Thank you so much for making videos like this! I have seen Bala Sharks in every pet store I have been to and was considering one, but had no idea they got so large. Great suggestions! I would have mentioned the Siamese algae eater as a replacement for the Chinese. (in fact I think your initial video sample was in fact a SAE and not a CAE). They give you the same look and actually can often be confused with each other. They also continue to eat algae much longer into adulthood than the Chinese one. Also, they are much better tank mates than Chinese algae eaters.

It is standard in the hobby to do a slightly colder water change before a storm to trigger a spawn. Is it possible we have been doing it wrong and we should be doing a warmer water change? Glad I came across this video as I was considering a German Blue Ram. Thanks for sharing!

My super red bristlenose is really aggressive. He HATES my cories, and will chase them around the tank any time he spots one.

Piranha are boring. I had three when I was a kid. Not knowing what I was doing at all my Jack Dempsey outgrew his tank so I put him in with the piranha. He was the dominant one over the piranhas. Ultimately I gave the 6” piranhas to the pet store. They are very boring fish.

Your list of fish or the ones that get bigger. They are all sold at pet Co, an pet smart. With no knowledge of what someone is getting into. It's 2022 there is no reason these paces are still selling these fish and the common pleco. There are so many different species of fish that stay small. Perfect for the size tanks them stores sell.

Although highly aggressive, but I just admire the Green Terror and Texan.

I like this series quite a bit.Keep them coming.I agree with all your recommendations also.I would perhaps say that the roseline shark can be a center piece fish. I have 4 in a 65 community and they are truely spectacular .I think they get passed up in the stores as they get more color the older they get. When they hit 4 or 5 inches whoa look out!

My Ebjd is stuck at 3” it seems like for the past couple months. I’ll probably just do a green terror (golden) when he dies, he just seems off. He was aggressive at first but not really now, my algae eater and catfish punk him.

That’s what happened to mine too. They grew to about that size, started showing deformities and eventually all died.

Jason I think the SAEs are a very go substitute for the CAE’s. They continue to eat algae well when they mature. Also for those with smaller tanks that like the Piranha look may be interested in the Colombian Red & Blue Tetra.

I'm picking up some new fish tomorrow at a local PetSmart. They have new fish come in on Tuesdays

Love these videos. I'm setting up a heavily planted 20 g long and have decided on a Bolivian ram (butterfly) for a centerpiece and panda corydoras for the bottom. Haven't decided on the schooling fish, though. Would like to keep the tank with South American fish, so lots to think about.
Thanks for all you do. You've helped make my return to the hobby a lot easier.
