  • Salary Sacrifice Car Leasing Explained - What is Salary Sacrifice and how does Salary Sacrifice Car Leasing differ from standard car finance?
A salary sacrifice lease car is a scheme allowing staff members to drive a brand-new car for a portion of their salary. So salary sacrifice basically means that you give up a portion of your salary to have it used to buy a benefit for you. The main benefit of it is that you are not paying tax and national insurance on that income in the first place meaning that an electric car salary sacrifice scheme can potentially be very attractive to a 40% taxpayer as things currently stand.
In this one we compare a hypothetical private car lease against a salary sacrifice car lease. These salary sacrifice car leases often make most sense to 40% taxpayers and above but then it really needs to be an electric vehicle or EV to make it worth while. Salary Sacrifice on an EV is a great idea for a lot of people (but not all) so we also examine those cases where it may not be the ideal choice. UK salary sacrifice schemes and EV salary sacrifice schemes are becoming very popular with higher rate taxpayers in the UK right now. Salary Sacrifice deals are becoming popular alternatives compared to traditional company car schemes and makes a lot of sense for those with car allowances too although you will need to pay company car tax on anything you get via one of these schemes. We look at a deal on a Tesla Model 3 in this video - would a Tesla Salary Sacrifice suit you? I think it would suit me so maybe Salary Sacrifice Car Leasing is something we should all carefully consider?
I do lots of simple car finance tutorials on my channel including a lot of lease vs buy car comparisons so please keep watching.

    Great video very informative.
The issue I have is that although my employer has a salery sacrifice scheme/Green car scheme, the majority of employees (including myself) are priced out of it... it is just simply to expensive.
Buying or leasing a new vehicle is fast becoming more and more of an exclusive club, as wages continue to fall behind living costs. Yet at the same time the public is being strong armed into buying Ulez compliant cars they cannot afford.
    Sorry for the rant 🙏🏿😊

Great video, thank you. I’ve found the same issue of not being able to get figures for salary sacrifice deals. My company is starting a scheme soon and I was looking for a rough indication, which as you say isn’t easy without being actually in a scheme. I still found the video and explanation very useful. The net cost seems high at first, but not when you consider it’s an over £40k car, insured, fully maintained with significant fuel savings it’s definitely worth considering.

Question for anyone using the salary sacrifice scheme - do you claim money for mileage as you would for normal company car and what is a typical rate given for an electric car. For me an electric company car would leave me 5ppm (pretty low but its based on HMRC guidelines) on the other hand if i took the cash in place of a company car i get paid 28ppm..

I suspect it will drop from 12.5 percent to 9 percent as I'll dip below the amount where it gets increased. But as well as that does this mean less pension is paid in due to the lower salary too? I'm guessing what I'm asking is will I pay for doing this later in life?

Hi Paul, I'm in a similar situation. If you have a car that reduces your pensionsble pay to below the threshold of £47846, then your contribution should drop from 12.5% to 9.1% and you will therefore pay less pension contributions each month. The lease car calculator will show the pension savings, along with Tax and NI savings. The pension you will get when you retire will be less, but it is not based on your monthly contributions. Each year, your pension accrues at a rate of 1/54th of your pensionable pay. This figure is then increased annually and will be shown on your Total Rewards Statement. You will definately get a reduced pension, but if it moves you into a lower contribution tier, then the total savings make it very competitive. I'm getting my Tesla Model 3 LR delivered on Thursday and can't wait :)

I have a choice between using my company car scheme, doing a salary sacrifice or just getting paid my company car allowance in cash and providing my own vehicle. Salary sacrifice is not worth it even with the tax savings because it reduces my pension and the cars aren't competetively priced. The company car scheme is OK, but BIK is a killer unless you get something designed to outsmart it, like a token plug-in hybrid. Even then I feel BIK is one of those con taxes we pay just because they can get away with it - it's hardly a benefit if you pay for it! So I'm going to take the money next time and provide my own car. Sure, that money will be taxed, I'll have to do my own tax and insurance and the car won't be as fancy, but I will get 45p per mile I drive which will add up to thousands per annum in my case. If I'm clever about it, I can break even or maybe even draw a small profit - then it'll be a benefit!

It’s tough now unless you have a full EV. I’ve got a car allowance myself (although only get 25ppm as a result) but would go for a salary sacrifice or EV as a company car if they were available but personal use case and electric charging availability/convenience etc are big factors.

Hey Mate. Really good videos. Unique position for me .. my employer is offering car allowance and also opened up salary sacrifice to most of the company to access sponsored car leases, fully insured and maintained. In a crude way with salary sacrifice could I assume that my car allowance value say is £500 and my salary sacrifice value is £500 would I be breaking even on this ? . As the money in the allowance is given to me and then taken away from me before tax in consideration of the salary sacrifice value …. If this makes sense 😂 thanks for any feedback or thoughts that you have ! 👍🏻

Do you know what? I have no idea but the folks running the salary sacrifice scheme should be able to tell you and give you a breakdown of exactly how it will affect you 👍👍👍 I’d be happy to hear how you get on.

I believe that you would be liable for income tax and NI on the £500pm allowance and BIK on the car, I’m not an expert but fairly sure this is what happens

@@bennop1485 Hi , I agree that in normal circumstances a car allowance would be taxed etc , but as my option is under a salary sacrifice scheme I am advised that you don’t get taxed as it’s taken by the employer before tax is calculated on PAYE for example . The same way in which a pension payment would be taken if on a company scheme.

@@alexp8924 it’s just car leasing but can be a good way of doing it, especially for higher tax payers. You can probably drive a new car with no bills other than fuel for a couple of hundred quid a monthly depending on your company scheme. Can be a very cost effective way of driving a new car. You’re not buying it. Watch my recent car leasing explained video if you want to understand why that may be a good thing for some people.
