- Video of a 70km tramp/hike along the first route ever discovered over the Southern Alps with Jeff Knewstubb and crew. Browning Pass was discovered in the 1600s by the Maori woman Raureka and her slave. The pass still bares her name on maps. It became the first greenstone trading route between the east and west coasts before being abandoned in favour of an easier pass. The video also features Urquhart hut built in 1933.
Thank you for sharing this. Raureka was my ancestor and it's impressive to see the route she discovered and to think of how she navigated it without the modern gear of today.
