Omg finally someone said that multi-level marketing is a corporate cult. Too many people think cults are just religious and therefore super rare. Also, I love how Scientology does everything in their power to prove they're not a cult. It's ridiculous.
So many people fall for the MLM and religious cults. There are many good documentaries about those. I've watched ones about Scientology, NXIVM, Jim Jones, Charles Manson, Heaven's Gate, etc. Many cults still exist today, even those where the leader has died.
When I was in a cult, I told a few others it was a cult. The leader said I was insane and told everyone a series of lies before having them vote me out. I'll skip the long story, but if any of you are reading this, thank to those old friends who contacted me to apologise after that cult collapsed.

I'm a hindu and really admire the Sikhs. The difference you talk about is prevalent everywhere and one can understand its existence in sikhism coz the religion fought wars and were known as the warrior class of ppl and even in those days had female warriors which is commendable considering how the west still feels about homosexuality & gender equality, the socially & economically exploited Asians are catching up faster than you think.

Not to forget the cult I was raised in. The doomsday cult called the Jehovah Witnesses. Every word you spoke sounded like a dicription of them. I am so ad I escaped and woke up.
It’s all relative to what country they are in.. in western world they are a cult, in the eastern countries they are extremist terrorists. But according to this video, they aren’t dangerous, they are not a cult - no one is forced by fear to be in that religion and anyone can leave anytime - they don’t have a human cult leader they believe in God. they don’t spread hate reforms and stay away from politics. South Korea the men go to prison for not joining the army. They do not use front groups or thought reform, anyone who wants to join uses their own free will.
@@hippiechickite no Jehovah's witness is a cult. If you leave, you're shunned by the rest of your family who is also in it. They do infact spread hate, especially against LGBT people and religious groups outside of it. It is extremely authoritarian. They make it clear that you will be punished for doubting anything. They are pretty much textbook cult, and to say otherwise is simply legitimizing it
They most certainly are a cult. The shun, they judge, and more. If you leave then your own children or wife can no longer even talk to you. They say differently, those who have seen it know.
I was part of the cult Nuevo Acropolis/New Acropolis, they pose as a psychology and philosophy course as a front to get followers, Then when you become a true member you start to do ceremonies and rituals, you dedicate everything to the cult, family becomes a problem, the encourage relationships but mostly with the members. I am glad I got out of it!

I have to be honest, I grew up in a Christian-based cult. I know when I tell people that, they think of me as some kind of freak, and who can blame them? The word "cult" has so many misconceptions behind it. This video definitely showed the reality of cults. Obviously, I am no longer involved with the cult, and I feel very sorry for the other children I know who grew up in the cult. I'm also glad that this video mentioned the long lectures because if it's anything he got right in this video, it's this. Every Sunday we go to "fellowship" which is basically church on drugs, which is an hour long, and has absolutely no substance. However, every year there is an "advanced class" that has lectures that last 6 HOURS at a time throughout the ENTIRE DAY. They also have a "foundational class" which is meant for teens when they turn 13, which includes lectures that last 3 hours on the weekends, and you're supposed to go every weekend for 6 weeks. Cults are complicated and cruel, and they left my parents poor, and robbed me of a childhood. I hope this helps give some perspective on this topic.

VERY well done. (This from someone who's been in several =and= had several years of post-graduate, formal education on all the forms of cults described here.) Kudos to the writer and producer, for sure.
When Cogito was describing signs of cult activity, it honestly just made me think of society in general. You've got to be careful who you even minorly complain about your job to, or they'll guilt trip you or get your co workers or boss to punish you. Even if you agree with someone's political stance, having criticism or doubts of a particular part will get the conversation shut down at best and collectively criticised at worst, even if talking about non controversial things. Not having the right interests can get you ignored or even ostracised. Coming from or being born into the wrong background in life makes you an inherently bad or inferior person... the horrible list just goes on.
I think this is how people get sucked into actual cults. A lot of it is just shitty stuff humans do naturally, but exaggerated a bit and being deliberately exploited by one specific leader.
At an old job of mine (food service) we had a policy of giving out leftover food that was still good but was destined for the trash to local homeless folks, and I got the chance to get to know several people who had abandoned their families and support networks to join a local cult here, and when they got out they had nowhere to go and no support network. They were all sad stories, but the one I most remember was a fellow named Jacob who was a genuinely smart, funny, good dude. He was who taught me that it's not just gullible hippy types that go in for cults - after stress or trauma (in his case the death of someone close to him) the human mind wants to find meaning and support wherever it can, and even someone with good critical thinking skills can fall into that trap. After fice years in the cult he'd cut off his entire family and didn't have any other friends outside of it, so he ended up on the streets. I honestly don't know what ever happened to him after I left that job, but I hope he made it somewhere better, I liked the guy.
I agree. Almost anyone can be susceptible to them under the right conditions. I've seen a friend with a PhD in Biology and another friend with a BA in Psychology completely change who they are and start believing really weird stuff because someone manipulated them when they were at their most vulnerable. I have a degree in marketing communications. When people claim they're not susceptible to marketing, I have to bite my tongue to keep from saying, "Marketers have spent decades analyzing the psychology of audiences down to the specific color schemes they use in restaurants. You're probably more susceptible to marketing than the person who openly admits to buying a Taco Bell burrito hours after seeing a commercial."
The isolation of family abuse works similarly. Cults are like abusers who decided controlling their household was not enough and went for a 'grander' scale. I can also say there are cult-like facets to cop culture. Being raised in the big blue family is a trip when you finally get enough distance to see it...
Yes, abusive families are often described as mini cults. You see it with family members sharing secrets amongst themselves, excommunicating the people who stand up or leave, everyone deferring to or repeating the statements of the controlling family member, etc.
A few years ago I had the opportunity to meet some moonie "missionaries" in the american southwest. That gave me some serious flashbacks to my mormon days. It is important to always be vigilant. Pay attention to the things groups say and then see what the people who left them have to say. The most important thing is to know yourself. Be aware of your feelings. If you have even the slightest doubt, or feel pressured, step back and say "no thanks."
That cult accusation that get tossed around about Stefan is weak. You don't have to be running a cult to encourage people to cut ties with abusive family members. That little piece about "defooing" lacks context everytime I've seen it mentioned by people. But I get it, nuance is hard.
@@GunnerSabotTankFire Yea, but encouraging to cut familial ties is very suspicious. The case to justify it needs to be very serious to even consider it. I certainly don't know the details of it but if he's just giving it as general advice, that is incredibly suspicious and honestly harmful.

Some people think that a certain amount of abuse should be swept under the rug if it comes from family members. I think that family members should treat each other better than how they treat non family members. But some people allow their family to treat them in ways they wouldn't stand for from non relatives, and use the family connections to justify accepting abuse.
This further justifies how love is in fact the most important and source need of humans. Love motivates, but when it becomes oriented for the service of a few rather than everyone; the problems begin...

I got sucked into a religious cult when I lived in Seoul, Korea 3 years ago. I got out once I reflected on what was happening. It was scary. When I stopped showing up they came to my house to try to "love bomb" me and get me to come back. I missed my free time. Then I started researching about their church. To anyone visiting Korea or visiting beware of The Church of God who follows "god the mother". But they have locations in other countries too. Be careful. I've been wondering if I should make a video about my 2 months with them. What do you guys think.

I know they have churches in most major American cities. I remember from the videos they showed me while trying to brain wash me. They showed me how one of rheir churches in Atlanta does a lot community work. Also, I remember they were telling me how I should go to their church in America. But, my city doesn't have one. I'm from Indianapolis, IN btw, the crazy thing is that the nearest church was in Chicago and they wanted me to go all the way to Chicago for church every week. I live in Japan now, but I also remember that they have a church in Tokyo too.

I think most groups can veer into cultishness. As soon as independence and individualism are looked down upon, it's cultish to me. I had to walk away from a friend group where people were not thinking for themselves and one person was serving as "glue." The control that one person exerted was so strange to me. Their sense of humor was exclusively putting the others down and that seemed to bring them all closer. Loyalty was heavily stressed. It was like watching trauma bonding in slow motion and gave me the ick. 🏃🏾♀️💨
There's no real distinction between a cult and 'normal' human interaction. It's all relative. We're all in the cult of the mind until we learn to withdraw from the content of the mind and be independent of concepts and words themselves.

I have encountered cult front organizations two times. Fortunately I have learned these characteristics, and decided to leave those groups - early enough to not get any problems.

I wasn’t ready to watch this video until now but I’m glad I did. The distinction between NRMs and cults is useful too, being one of degree, exclusion, other “activities” tacked on, leader worship, etc.
American society has a great deal of cult-like elements, especially Trump worshipers, who can somehow pretend a compulsive liar speaks truth. (The old Republicans were never so insane, but this is where it is now.) Not all societies are cult-like, though.

When I was in college, I had a Biology teacher who was an EST graduate. She played Werner Erhardt tapes on class time, yelled at us to "get OFF it! Get fucking OFF it!" Out of the blue, forced us to sign up for the Hunger Project or not pass the class, and told us we would be kicked out of the class if we ever stayed home sick be we supposedly "created the sickness intentionally". I had a miscarriage, and missed a day of class. When I came back she tried not to let me in, saying that I had "created" whatever had been wrong with me. I looked her right in the eye and said " are you saying that I intentionally killed my child?" She paused, thought about it, and backed off probably thinking she might lose her job, and let me back in. It was a horrible experience. I was only 20 years old and didn't think to report her, I'd never let her get away with that stuff now.

I don’t think Stefan Molyneux encourages people to dissociate from their families. He thinks that people don’t have obligations to families they didn’t choose and that if those relationships are negative or abusive, that is when it makes sense to disassociate.

@username I've watched his content for a few years. Not a cult. Everyone is free to disagree with him, not forced to donate (or shamed for not doing so). He can be a very over the top personality, but is very clear on being your own person, making your own decisions etc. To be clear, I dont agree with a lot of what he says, he just has interesting content most of the time.

@Mycel they call my grandmother the matriarch, anything she says goes and I'm not allowed to negotiate, and I've been told that I'm the lowest ranking family member. Examples. I apologized to my grandmother about my nearly mute friend being unable to speak louder and explained they wave every time. The next day I was handed a list of rules that included "people will speak when they enter" I asked to bring friends that I consider family to dinner. I said they could bring food. I was told I am allowed my fiance. Family dinner is for my grandmother's family and everyone else gets +1 Edit: fixed typo

I really appreciate this video. My beliefs are Rastafarian, I won't go into the details, but I am not part of an organized Rasta group. It's great to avoid stereotypical thinking. However, teachings that isolate, separate the individual from their own reflections on information, reward the "right kind of questions" while asking the "wrong kind of questions" lead to pre-pandemic social distancing. I say to people "seek truth, I can't tell you what that word means. Whatever you believe is between you and the Creator. It is not my place to judge how you think of intangible things. We have traditional stories, that have been embellished, but your choice of morality is how you show the character you desire. Treat others as you want to be treated. None of this is new information. If any one person seems to have all the answers, pause and reflect. Don't make idols out of random people. When you meet your heroes and learn the details of their lives, you might not like what you find. Learn math and physics, if you have no access to anything else you know is true. If you feel oppressed, seek help because pride or arrogance on a solo mission of revenge will only remove you from your own morals. Prolonged anger leads to justifying regrettable actions." I say a lot, but my words are less important than people's own methods of finding a community where they benefit from some kind of mutual aid.

In 1970 I was in a Yogi Bhajan ashram. A directive came down from the guru that all women had to wear turbans. All the women quit that very day, and all the men quit the next day. Only the subsidiary guru and his wife were left. Within a couple of months the ashram had filled up again--with people who wanted to be ordered around.

I'd really like to see a video about how children born into cults find their way out of them, as this is the case for both me and my husband. My husband was born into and raised in a cult, The Worldwide Church of God, that exactly fits all of the criteria in the definition of cults. He left in his early 20s. I was born into and raised in... well, I really need a name for it. It was something like a cult, very leftie, hippie, a bit like The Children of God. Bu, as far as I knew, there was no leader or even a centralized leadership. It was rife with drugs and child sex trafficking, with extreme violence, and extreme mind control techniques used on the children to keep us from talking or rebelling. We were taught that we were enlightened, and the outside world wasn't, so we couldn't tell anyone from that outside world what was happening to us because "they wouldn't understand." We were also taught that, if we left, we were likely to be in terrible danger. But there was no leader! Is that a cult? I think so! But it doesn't fit the classic definition of cults. Whatever it was, I got out at 17.
You mention that cults aren't just religious but can be political and economic. Good points. But, I think that all religions are cults, along with all economic and political ideologies. It makes a lot of sense and it explains how those too far into any one of those become deranged and isolated.

After researching cults, I found out there are some people who do not believe in mind control (thought reform). I hope those people will still take measures to protect themselves from cults, as cults can and will use this ignorance to their advantage.

Yeah I didn't think it was a very relevant talking point when it comes to the subject of cults. Assuming some sources were a bit off, but anyone who watches Stephan's content regularly knows he gets a bad wrap from Wikipedia etc.
@Seth Greenberg that’s just the thing isn’t it? Genuine help groups can advise people leave abusive family or spouses, while cults tell everybody that they all have abusive family and spouses.

The one criticism I have with this video is that not all cults are run by a single charismatic leader. Cults can also be run by a group of people too.

Not to forget the cult I was raised in. The doomsday cult called the Jehovah Witnesses. Every word you spoke sounded like a dicription of them. I am so ad I escaped and woke up.
It’s all relative to what country they are in.. in western world they are a cult, in the eastern countries they are extremist terrorists.
But according to this video, they aren’t dangerous,
they are not a cult - no one is forced by fear to be in that religion and anyone can leave anytime - they don’t have a human cult leader they believe in God.

@@hippiechickite no Jehovah's witness is a cult. If you leave, you're shunned by the rest of your family who is also in it. They do infact spread hate, especially against LGBT people and religious groups outside of it. It is extremely authoritarian. They make it clear that you will be punished for doubting anything.

I was part of the cult Nuevo Acropolis/New Acropolis, they pose as a psychology and philosophy course as a front to get followers, Then when you become a true member you start to do ceremonies and rituals, you dedicate everything to the cult, family becomes a problem, the encourage relationships but mostly with the members.

I have to be honest, I grew up in a Christian-based cult. I know when I tell people that, they think of me as some kind of freak, and who can blame them? The word "cult" has so many misconceptions behind it. This video definitely showed the reality of cults. Obviously, I am no longer involved with the cult, and I feel very sorry for the other children I know who grew up in the cult. I'm also glad that this video mentioned the long lectures because if it's anything he got right in this video, it's this. Every Sunday we go to "fellowship" which is basically church on drugs, which is an hour long, and has absolutely no substance. However, every year there is an "advanced class" that has lectures that last 6 HOURS at a time throughout the ENTIRE DAY. They also have a "foundational class" which is meant for teens when they turn 13, which includes lectures that last 3 hours on the weekends, and you're supposed to go every weekend for 6 weeks. Cults are complicated and cruel, and they left my parents poor, and robbed me of a childhood. I hope this helps give some perspective on this topic.

When Cogito was describing signs of cult activity, it honestly just made me think of society in general. You've got to be careful who you even minorly complain about your job to, or they'll guilt trip you or get your co workers or boss to punish you. Even if you agree with someone's political stance, having criticism or doubts of a particular part will get the conversation shut down at best and collectively criticised at worst, even if talking about non controversial things. Not having the right interests can get you ignored or even ostracised. Coming from or being born into the wrong background in life makes you an inherently bad or inferior person... the horrible list just goes on.
I think this is how people get sucked into actual cults. A lot of it is just shitty stuff humans do naturally, but exaggerated a bit and being deliberately exploited by one specific leader.

At an old job of mine (food service) we had a policy of giving out leftover food that was still good but was destined for the trash to local homeless folks, and I got the chance to get to know several people who had abandoned their families and support networks to join a local cult here, and when they got out they had nowhere to go and no support network. They were all sad stories, but the one I most remember was a fellow named Jacob who was a genuinely smart, funny, good dude. He was who taught me that it's not just gullible hippy types that go in for cults - after stress or trauma (in his case the death of someone close to him) the human mind wants to find meaning and support wherever it can, and even someone with good critical thinking skills can fall into that trap. After fice years in the cult he'd cut off his entire family and didn't have any other friends outside of it, so he ended up on the streets.
I honestly don't know what ever happened to him after I left that job, but I hope he made it somewhere better, I liked the guy.
I agree. Almost anyone can be susceptible to them under the right conditions. I've seen a friend with a PhD in Biology and another friend with a BA in Psychology completely change who they are and start believing really weird stuff because someone manipulated them when they were at their most vulnerable.
I have a degree in marketing communications. When people claim they're not susceptible to marketing, I have to bite my tongue to keep from saying, "Marketers have spent decades analyzing the psychology of audiences down to the specific color schemes they use in restaurants. You're probably more susceptible to marketing than the person who openly admits to buying a Taco Bell burrito hours after seeing a commercial."
The isolation of family abuse works similarly. Cults are like abusers who decided controlling their household was not enough and went for a 'grander' scale.
I can also say there are cult-like facets to cop culture. Being raised in the big blue family is a trip when you finally get enough distance to see it...
Yes, abusive families are often described as mini cults. You see it with family members sharing secrets amongst themselves, excommunicating the people who stand up or leave, everyone deferring to or repeating the statements of the controlling family member, etc.

A few years ago I had the opportunity to meet some moonie "missionaries" in the american southwest. That gave me some serious flashbacks to my mormon days.
It is important to always be vigilant. Pay attention to the things groups say and then see what the people who left them have to say. The most important thing is to know yourself. Be aware of your feelings. If you have even the slightest doubt, or feel pressured, step back and say "no thanks."

@@GunnerSabotTankFire Yea, but encouraging to cut familial ties is very suspicious. The case to justify it needs to be very serious to even consider it. I certainly don't know the details of it but if he's just giving it as general advice, that is incredibly suspicious and honestly harmful.

Some people think that a certain amount of abuse should be swept under the rug if it comes from family members. I think that family members should treat each other better than how they treat non family members. But some people allow their family to treat them in ways they wouldn't stand for from non relatives, and use the family connections to justify accepting abuse.
This further justifies how love is in fact the most important and source need of humans. Love motivates, but when it becomes oriented for the service of a few rather than everyone; the problems begin...

I got sucked into a religious cult when I lived in Seoul, Korea 3 years ago. I got out once I reflected on what was happening. It was scary. When I stopped showing up they came to my house to try to "love bomb" me and get me to come back. I missed my free time. Then I started researching about their church. To anyone visiting Korea or visiting beware of The Church of God who follows "god the mother". But they have locations in other countries too. Be careful. I've been wondering if I should make a video about my 2 months with them. What do you guys think.

I know they have churches in most major American cities. I remember from the videos they showed me while trying to brain wash me. They showed me how one of rheir churches in Atlanta does a lot community work. Also, I remember they were telling me how I should go to their church in America. But, my city doesn't have one. I'm from Indianapolis, IN btw, the crazy thing is that the nearest church was in Chicago and they wanted me to go all the way to Chicago for church every week. I live in Japan now, but I also remember that they have a church in Tokyo too.

I think most groups can veer into cultishness. As soon as independence and individualism are looked down upon, it's cultish to me. I had to walk away from a friend group where people were not thinking for themselves and one person was serving as "glue." The control that one person exerted was so strange to me. Their sense of humor was exclusively putting the others down and that seemed to bring them all closer. Loyalty was heavily stressed. It was like watching trauma bonding in slow motion and gave me the ick. 🏃🏾♀️💨

There's no real distinction between a cult and 'normal' human interaction. It's all relative. We're all in the cult of the mind until we learn to withdraw from the content of the mind and be independent of concepts and words themselves.

When I was in college, I had a Biology teacher who was an EST graduate. She played Werner Erhardt tapes on class time, yelled at us to "get OFF it! Get fucking OFF it!" Out of the blue, forced us to sign up for the Hunger Project or not pass the class, and told us we would be kicked out of the class if we ever stayed home sick be we supposedly "created the sickness intentionally". I had a miscarriage, and missed a day of class. When I came back she tried not to let me in, saying that I had "created" whatever had been wrong with me. I looked her right in the eye and said " are you saying that I intentionally killed my child?" She paused, thought about it, and backed off probably thinking she might lose her job, and let me back in. It was a horrible experience. I was only 20 years old and didn't think to report her, I'd never let her get away with that stuff now.

It's funny... Whenever I hear about cults, I think of Telltale's substantial collection of vids detailing them.
I don’t think Stefan Molyneux encourages people to dissociate from their families. He thinks that people don’t have obligations to families they didn’t choose and that if those relationships are negative or abusive, that is when it makes sense to disassociate.

@username I've watched his content for a few years. Not a cult. Everyone is free to disagree with him, not forced to donate (or shamed for not doing so). He can be a very over the top personality, but is very clear on being your own person, making your own decisions etc. To be clear, I dont agree with a lot of what he says, he just has interesting content most of the time.

@Mycel they call my grandmother the matriarch, anything she says goes and I'm not allowed to negotiate, and I've been told that I'm the lowest ranking family member.
Examples.
I apologized to my grandmother about my nearly mute friend being unable to speak louder and explained they wave every time. The next day I was handed a list of rules that included "people will speak when they enter"
I asked to bring friends that I consider family to dinner. I said they could bring food. I was told I am allowed my fiance. Family dinner is for my grandmother's family and everyone else gets +1

Most Muslims and Evangelical Christians tick most of those boxes. If they were smaller groups we would certainly count them as cults but because it would offend a large group, we don't.

I really appreciate this video. My beliefs are Rastafarian, I won't go into the details, but I am not part of an organized Rasta group. It's great to avoid stereotypical thinking. However, teachings that isolate, separate the individual from their own reflections on information, reward the "right kind of questions" while asking the "wrong kind of questions" lead to pre-pandemic social distancing. I say to people "seek truth, I can't tell you what that word means. Whatever you believe is between you and the Creator. It is not my place to judge how you think of intangible things. We have traditional stories, that have been embellished, but your choice of morality is how you show the character you desire. Treat others as you want to be treated. None of this is new information. If any one person seems to have all the answers, pause and reflect. Don't make idols out of random people. When you meet your heroes and learn the details of their lives, you might not like what you find. Learn math and physics, if you have no access to anything else you know is true. If you feel oppressed, seek help because pride or arrogance on a solo mission of revenge will only remove you from your own morals. Prolonged anger leads to justifying regrettable actions." I say a lot, but my words are less important than people's own methods of finding a community where they benefit from some kind of mutual aid.

In 1970 I was in a Yogi Bhajan ashram. A directive came down from the guru that all women had to wear turbans. All the women quit that very day, and all the men quit the next day. Only the subsidiary guru and his wife were left. Within a couple of months the ashram had filled up again--with people who wanted to be ordered around.
Very interesting it's exactly the kind of videos I wish I could do about cults. I disagree with the leader criteria. Non charismatic person can also become cults leaders.

I'd really like to see a video about how children born into cults find their way out of them, as this is the case for both me and my husband. My husband was born into and raised in a cult, The Worldwide Church of God, that exactly fits all of the criteria in the definition of cults. He left in his early 20s. I was born into and raised in... well, I really need a name for it. It was something like a cult, very leftie, hippie, a bit like The Children of God. Bu, as far as I knew, there was no leader or even a centralized leadership. It was rife with drugs and child sex trafficking, with extreme violence, and extreme mind control techniques used on the children to keep us from talking or rebelling. We were taught that we were enlightened, and the outside world wasn't, so we couldn't tell anyone from that outside world what was happening to us because "they wouldn't understand." We were also taught that, if we left, we were likely to be in terrible danger. But there was no leader! Is that a cult? I think so! But it doesn't fit the classic definition of cults. Whatever it was, I got out at 17.
You mention that cults aren't just religious but can be political and economic. Good points. But, I think that all religions are cults, along with all economic and political ideologies. It makes a lot of sense and it explains how those too far into any one of those become deranged and isolated.

After researching cults, I found out there are some people who do not believe in mind control (thought reform). I hope those people will still take measures to protect themselves from cults, as cults can and will use this ignorance to their advantage.
