Seriously, how many singers can match this incredible interpretation. She is absolutely IN the song. As she was with all of her songs. Heartbreaker; heart opener. One of the finest albums ever produced.
My god, what a perfect song to close this masterpiece by the greatest english female singer ever ! It is simply AWESOME ! Perfection is a weak word to describe the performance ! Thank you Madame Dusty Springfield !
With everything else that is so terrific in this song - Arif Mardin's string arrangement - particularly at 2:38 and then from 3:17 through the fade-out. Perfection.
Dusty was born with a one-of-a-kind voice, unmatched to this day. But, she also worked until she had an impeccable technique. Her phrasing is as good as Billie Holiday's and her attention to detail is unerring. On top of that, Dusty's gift for reading the song and finding layers upon layers is absolutely masterful. Should there ever be such a poll, Dusty would likely get my vote for the greatest pop singer of all time.

Agree Phil
I feel the same about this album. I bought cd's for my sisters and they just didn't "get it". Love Dusty!
Perfectly put....

I honestly thought Pig Iron were the only group to record a cut of this beautiful song. I am thrilled to hear this!!
Check out PJ Proby’s earlier version. Also terrific (arranged by Jack Nitzche). Still, I think this Memphis version by Springfield might be the best.
Dusty in Memphis is a record everyone needs to hear. One of the great female voices of the 60's.
Great song - spectacular singing by Dusty 💗
the series "Looking" brought me here
The way she phrases "so lonely" and "soul" kills me every time.
this is a great album ❤
What a gift Dusty had...her voice!!!,.ktf.
One beautiful song sung by the legendary Dusty whom I saw and met in the 60s. Rog.Pacific Sunset Records.
Britain in the sixties had two iconic voices based there in Dust Springfield and Scott Walker sadly gone but not forgotten.
We looked as Scott as a US singer as he was American
@@stephennoble7955 Technically you're right Scott was American who took up British Citizenship .
@@andrewkeppler1000 Did not know that. They were both great. Good to meet you

What an artist. ❤
I didn't know that song....really beautiful as well arrangement and late dusty springfield and her backup's singers sang well that hard musical piece
Im saying that i need you… 💞Dusty…how proud I am. I was so happy there. Love the lyrics. And the sound. Her voice is just heavenly.
God only wants the Best. why he took Dusty.. Just sad that we on planet earth now have memories. R.I.P; Dusty.
PJ Proby did a killer version, but Dusty absolutely owns it. A much missed soul Queen, globally respected as an all time great!
That intonation 1:08
Otherworldly
maria mackee did a good cover of this. great song perfectly sung by dusty.
Aw Dusty. Ur voice breaks my fuckin ❤️
I feel like I need to hold on to something when she sings the word "soul." Grief counselors should be made available.
Dusty Springfield and Karen Carpenter
