I like and use neovim. It’s fun to play with lua. But knowing vimrc is still super super important as a lot of times you will not have access to neovim. Neovim feels like a tasty icing on a cake, but you still need to know how the cake is made. Also, someone mentioned “stow” as a tool for managing the symlinks without a custom bash script and it’s been really neat to run with that.
