u do realize 5160 spring steel is a popular choice for sword making and u usually only see spring steel on small knives in the $200 price range add bucks amazing heat treat i think this is an amazing value...thanks brother great reveiw!
How did I miss this? Ever tried the Talon Machette? I think that might be some of the most impressive chopping footage from this sized blade. Looks like one hell of a tool there. Wish I could still get one. I'll have to settle for the TOPS Storm Vector, which is also unreal from what I've seen. This is the only other knife that has dropped my jaw from the chopping footage.
Thanx for tge reply, really helped, since I ordered the Parangatang with the Potbelly and I'm planning of giving my Rodent Rucki a rest and I will be using it sort of a summer Long Knife in my bush, and I have a pretty good chopper with my SP-53, but I do like that Buck Froe, Thanx Israel.
Since you mentioned the Woodsman Pal, I wonder what your thoughts on it are? I got one and was expecting exemplary quality, but was disappointed. The grind on my Pal is uneven from side to side and it came fairly dull. The fit of the wood to the metal was amateurish and I really debated sending it back, but opted to tweak it myself instead. This looks good, and I've wanted a froe for a while. The stock on this looks much thicker than the Pal, too. I was kind of surprised by the Pal, being US made, I had my hopes up high that it would be legendary. Sadly, this Buck looks like it would be more along what I was expecting. Did the Buck come sharp at least?
traderjoes The Pals do still kinda have that "stamped out during wartime rationing" look sometimes. I sharpened the end and the base of the blade on mine to give it more sharp edge length.
Did you find the grind to be on the heavy side? It didn't seem to bite as deeply as you would expect given the weight. Have you compared it to leaner brush axes like your Woodman's Pal or a Fiskars? Thanks for the review.
Hi Israel I checked up on the Froe only to find out it's a 3 pc Series, a Froe, Hatchet, and Knife, I just wish Buck used more red, heh heh heh.but I liked it, Thanx Israel.
I finally got my Winkler II Spike belt knife and the tomahawk with rubber grips. I love em and if you really want to know why Winkler knifes are so good just get one in your hand. They are so balanced and crafted like a custom more then a small production.
Awesome review, as always. I just have a quick question. I'm stuck between this, the Ontario SP8, and the Ontario SP53. I like the 5160 of this blade and the SP53 (though I don't mind the 1095 of the SP8 by any means), and I like the "sharpened pry bar" utility of this and the SP8. I've heard many reviewers say the SP53 is comparable to hatchet/hawk in terms of chopping capability. However, I really really like the sharpened end of the SP8, plus I found if for under $43. Lowest I've found for the SP53 is $82, and $89 for this one. In a perfect would I would get all three, haha. Sharpness out of the box isn't a factor, I'll put a good edge on it. Which would you reccomend for a heavy duty chopper and bottoner, and even shtf blade
Keith Kacanek If being heavy duty is the main thing, I'd go for this Buck Froe, it is thick and heavy and the handle is more durable than on the Ontario knives.
they go to the trouble of having the "Buck anvil" cut out, yet they can't put in a lanyard hole? For something so heavy duty, I think that a more secure grip with a lanyard would be useful.
And heres an oddball review request out of left field...have you ever looked at those Fox Champagne Sabers? It isT5MoV, is this junk stainless steel or could you actually use the Fox saber to actually cut things? I haven't seen anybody on youtube or the web evaluate these for anything other than opening bottles. It would be cool to see a knife guy actually test one as an actual cutting implement. I've almost bought one a few times but $150-200 at most online retailers is a bit much if its only good for popping bottle tops, lol.
Excellent video Israel, in your opinion how does that Buck Chopper size up against the O.K.C. GEN2 SP-53, I have tge SP-53 and I think it's a "Sharpened Hammer" would you do a face off to me it would be like the Heavy Weight Fight of the Centry, I would like to see it to make up my mind whether to get that Buck, Heah Israel tell Buck they need to use more red, heh heh heh.
That Buck Compadre is an interesting blade. Truthfully, at first look it took my breath away. Kind of dangerous looking but, oh, so handy. Though I believe that Becker designed the BK-9 with the idea of chopping in mind, I also believe that knives should not be used for this purpose. However, something like the Buck Compadre seems to me to be the perfect tool for such tasks as batonning and the like. An unusual blade, but I like it. I think its colour is kind of neat, also. Good video!
I've been eyeing this, but the price keeps putting me off. I don't have a specific need for it, afterall, and for the same price I could get like, a Condor or 2, so that's the route I usually go(side note:when you gonna get that new Condor Duku parang, it's awesome, and I know you like you some parang!). Still keeping my eye on these though, watching and waiting for a deal to pop up.
That's a COOL Looking Blade! Think ill need to pick one up to test! And of course ill have to sand blast that Powdercoated off her. Local shop has them onsale for $80.00 Cad :)
It chops like a longer knife would, since the shape lets you chop right to the end of the edge, so it chops like a 2-3 inch longer knife would, which is pretty good!
Ahhh I just love it when the bigger blades come into the play :) Really interesting design and thickness, I see some modding potential like giving it a point + making it lighter but cutting it in an angle from the spine, kinda like a parang... but I guess it would lose a part of it's charm then. Awesome video ;)
I realy need to stop watching your videos Becaus now i have another one to add to the list of stuff i cant live without Its one BADASS WOMPER CHOMPER I need to get one
the red coating also makes the froe highly visible. In a camp setting that can be a huge plus. A lot of people lose a knife or a hatchet in plain sight because it blends in with the ground so well. especially when you throw in a walnut handle. thats why a lot of people wrap a bright orange band of tape around their axe and hatchet handles.
Yes before there was "batoning" there were what was called a froe. A froe actually had an eye where the handle came out at a right angle. It was designed to make wood roofing shingles. You basically would split short boards from what looked like a firewood chunk. Like this th-cam.com/video/-FjpmFwVLtM/w-d-xo.html
I have never really been a fan of knives where the handle curves down lower than the blade, IMHO I think I would be worried about hitting my knuckles when chopping with it !
Buck describes this product in this way: "The 108 Compadre Chopping Froe is among the Compadre Series of outdoor tools that boasts the latest in design and innovation. Buck's New Product Development team set forward to create a heavy-duty, durable, multi-purpose wood working tool that would be ideal for outdoor activities. The Compadre Chopping Froe is designed and engineered for a multitude of outdoor tasks. Composed of 5160 steel, the 9-1/2" blade is perfect for clearing, heavy chopping, splitting, and batoning. Weighing under 2 lbs. and with an overall length of 16-3/4", the Compadre Chopping Froe is the right size for all outdoor tasks. The unique, red powdercoat finish on the blade adds style while protecting against rust and corrosion."
machetes like this are made for chopping and batoning but the problem is now all these people think any machete made should ba able to be batoned through a log and survive. i watched a guy try to baton a gerber gator jr. through a log and claim it was a piece of shit because it broke. people need to know the limitations of their tools and what they were made for, thin machetes are for brush clearing and thick ones are for chopping/batoning
5160 not a particulary expensive steel?? Sorry but look price of all machete whit 5160 carbon steel....is high price.....just aranyik machete is cheap but really good blade.
+WeAllJuggleKnives Good saying bro :P What can you say about the knive brand "RUI" ? Did you know them ? When not look at these knives , they make a solid impression :) Sorry for my grammar and spelling xD
You always find the craziest stuff to test, awesome playboy
***** Thanks, bro, I have a couple even crazier blades coming up.
***** ... Surprised you haven't tested this yet playboy.

Israel, your expertise is needed again, between the Buck Froe, and the Ka-Bar Johnson Adventure Parangatang, which one would you suggest ?
paulie 4x I like the Froe better, but it's kind of apples vs. oranges because the parangatang is a lot longer.
Nice Froe Bro. I just received the Compadre Camp knife... I couldn't resist the RED!
cyclist01222 Looks like an awesome knife in one of my favorite carbon steels.
WeAllJuggleKnives
I hope so. I was hung up on 1095 so this is my first 5160. So far so good.
That is bad ass!!!!!
I want & need that for splitting with baton method
This is one of Buck's best and toughest blades, I believe the current one have a better color scheme, but still awesome.
Unique color! Man, that's a monster! Very nice machete.
Armed Rogue Thanks Roguester!

I miss these old school knife beatings.

WeAllJuggleKnives would you be able to put some paracord through the the small hole by the handle or would that be impractical and/or not safe?

That's easy the children that weren't the milk man's heh heh heh
paulie 4x Those were the pizza guy's LOL
Too funny,,,
That thing looked like crap on a website, but that thing is a little monster. Great vid
River Pastella Yeah totally! The website pics don't give a good feel for the mass or how thick the spine is!

***** Man, seems to me that the blade's colour is one of the more interesting things about it.
Yes , Red is cool
But would not look good with my other gear
Yes, that is a consideration.
I like it. Kind of like a competitive option for the silky nata
thenextarcher full tang!
I've been thinking about getting an Aranyik K-1 or an aeof kukri. Which would you recommend?
Andrew Fife Can't go wrong with an Aranyik K-1.
Radical blade man. Looks like something a viking would use
NotAHappyCloud Seax relative!
Good review...that looks like buck got it right. Nice to see Buck realized there are other steels besides 420hc!
Jerry Morris Yeah this Compadre Line from Buck is a good development, one of their most promising new lines I'd say.
Do you have an Ontario SP8 to compare it too?
I'd like to see that face off
Do you think this chops and splits better than large blades?
It chops like a longer knife would, since the shape lets you chop right to the end of the edge, so it chops like a 2-3 inch longer knife would, which is pretty good!
@@WeAllJuggleKnives do you still own it??
@@WeAllJuggleKnives thank you!!! Do you still own this knife? Also seen the new ones?
this machete will be in my collection

renemanjr123 Womper Chomper would be a great name for a blade!
I get royalties HAHAHAHA
Say Heah Is, Thanx You for sharing the Froe/Chopper. ,, .
The red coating is so the blade won't rust away over night if you leave it out while in the woods or camping
the red coating also makes the froe highly visible. In a camp setting that can be a huge plus. I saw this at a gun show and it's crazy man
What's tougher than 5160? I'm asking.
3V steel is pretty tough! Bit more expensive though.
very nice not bad at all I would buy one..
whats the name of the other machete you compared it with?
+anarchism That one is called The Woodsman's Pal
Cool blade! why can't I like your video's xD
MISTER AGB You can Like them, unless you're on a mobile device like a smart phone.
WeAllJuggleKnives a bug maybe? I can't see howmanny likes-dislikes, or is that just something you have disabled?
MISTER AGB I can see them but others can't. Currently there are 116 Likes and 3 Dislikes.

2:50 what's the machete that's over the red one?
BloodRedWing
woodsman’s Pal
Not a novelty at all. A beast made for demolishing wood.
PowerMadHeadBanger yeah bro!
Great video, dude! Keep it up! :D
Sawyer Simmons Thanks, bro!
When I have:
-the Wetterlings #115 hunters hatchet
-the ka-bar becker bk9
Im afraid I don't need this 10 inch long peace of awesomeness :S
Great machete!!!
ivaudio1 thanks for watching!
Kind of surprised you didn't pitch it as a zombie killer.
awesome dude
Joshuah Moran Thank you, Josh, I like your channel!
WeAllJuggleKnives sweet man, I dig your too, you give honest reviews, and you're a waterbottle serial killer :)
I watched bucks hoodlum break when being battoned then I was told they wouldn't warranty it??
that was the early models....dont be detoured because of that i have been using bucks spring steel for years...best knives i have ever had
That's because of the notch on the blade's spine.
One frickin' cleaver!
Bob Wampler yeah!
Awesome.
Sergio Arriaga yeah!
A froe isn't intended for chopping. It's meant for splitting logs into shingles, slats, and boards.
Buck describes this product in this way: "The 108 Compadre Chopping Froe is among the Compadre Series of outdoor tools that boasts the latest in design and innovation. Dodge can market the Ram as a supercharged sports car but at the end of the day it's still just a pickup truck.
That is true. But you could still race with it at a given speed.
but it technically isn't a froe even if they want to call it that. a froe has a handle that is perpendicular to the blade
$62 Amazon prime!
Wanna hear a good one? As of today, this is $282 on Amazon Canada. 😂😂😂😂
Ok, the Froe or Jess X.

+kydd666 That's not a machete, it's a froe with a knife handle. A froe's main purpose is to be batoned through wood.
+kydd666 yes it is true but people are sometimes silly that they use and comment without thinking

did you see gideonstactical ripping on this knife said it was shit man i hate that guy lol
It looks like a lawn mower blade with a grip screwed on one end.
lawn mower blade with a wooden handle attached.
I've never seen and more ugly machete like this :0
But good video , love from germany
+Rock Charles Yes, Froes are pretty ugly and the red coating brings out more ugly LOL.
+WeAllJuggleKnives Good saying bro :P What can you say about the knive brand "RUI" ? Did you know them ? When not look at these knives , they make a solid impression :)

Lol. Check out the skrama.
Bos heat treated 5160 vs stump of truth...
The fore in vid chops like poo! Edge refine required. Buy it, but learn to sharpen. A good learner.
I'm glad they invented paint stripper. That red just looks wrong to me... God damn ugly.
Yo Adrian It's a powder coating, but I'm sure it can be removed anyway.
I dunno it look quite nice to me
They make it in black now
