Using flight modes for flaps takes out the guess work on the flap settings. trim it once and your done. then no issues for landing if you guessed wrong.
GPS- Not Radar, so take it with a grain of salt. And yes, flight modes for flaps. Always. Any configuration that changes your flight characteristics- I.e. flaps, wing sweep, air brakes, etc, you should use flight modes in order to be able to trim the aircraft in whatever the current configuration is. This ensures any time you change the configuration your plane continues to fly straight and level.
