This song was written, composed and released by country singer Jimmy Dean in September 1961, shot up to Number 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 by November, and played on our local radio stations all through the 60s while I was growing up.
I had your same reaction as a kid, sad and upset for John, wondering why they didn't go back and save his life after he'd saved theirs. My grandfather, a miner, explained how it was just a story, in which the mine had collapsed, John held if off of them long enough for them to escape, they had tried going back down with equipment to save him, but it was too much for him to hold. "But, but..." I kept saying, having been raised on TV plots with satisfying endings, insisting there must have been some way to dig him out or something. I remember him and my grandmother patiently explaining how sometimes there's just too much material between rescuers and victims to get through, even if anyone was still alive. Trying out of their love for me to make a child feel better about a character in a song, when these were in fact very real fears they faced on a daily basis every time he went off to work. All this over a fictitious song, mind you, but I was _invested!_ It left quite an impression on me, for a long time. lol
Then in 1969, when I was 10, Jimmy Dean came out with a breakfast sausage, which is still a staple on our breakfast table today. We never were quite sure how singing and sausage were related, but it was good stuff nonetheless. :)

Great reaction, Maria! This song was written, sung, and made extremely popular in th 60's by Jimmy Dean (yes, THAT Jimmy Dean of "Jimmy Dean Sausage" fame!). Your reaction to Geoff is very similar to a LOT of other women reactors, lol!

Most fun I've seen Geoff have is the VoicePlay cover of We Don't Talk About Bruno. Which would also be a great introduction to VoicePlay for you if you haven't come across them yet.

There is a Voiceplay mini called Peaches (originally done by Jack Black for the Mario Bros movie) that will show you all the Voiceplay members being very silly and over the top! And the one they are dropping in a couple of weeks is ridiculously funny!

I always felt Big John was a gentle Giant who would go out of his way to be helpful, but at the same time didn't know his own strength and might have been a little mentally challenged.
Once the mine collapse with all the toxic air, there would've been nothing anyone could have done. Its one of the hard truths of mining and why they'd take parakeets, canary, or other small bird down with them. It's a very dangerous job and still is.
I do like how Geoff honors the song. Looking forward to the next reaction 😊

They were taking timbers and all to prop it up to get him out when it crashed around him. Jimmy Dean (of sausage fame) wrote and sang this song. I grew up with Jimmy Dean, Marty Robbins, Hank Williams, Sr., Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash. My adopted dad had all of those and the stereo to play them on. Love the ballads. If you want to see a comic side: Way Down, the Monster Mash. If you just want to hear his voice, check out his Little Mermaid narration as well as Poe's short stories (The Telltale Heart, Masque of the Red Death, more) or poems (Raven, Annabelle Lee and more).

This is one of Geoff's first solo videos after Sixteen Tons.
Geoff has a 5+ octave range.
Geoff and Tim sang together (sorta) alittle in Just Sing by Voiceplay. Done during the covid lockdown. All money from it went to charity. Have the captions on because it tells who each person is and their relation to Voiceplay.
Geoff has a tons of awesome videos to choose from. My first was Ain't No Sunshine.
High and Dry. I See Fire show his range very well.
He will be releasing his new video this Saturday, August 5th. He rented a whole freaking prison for this one.
Voiceplay will probably release their new video next Friday, August 11th.
Make sure you watch to the very end. They have a little surprise after a brief pause.
What's better than 4 drunken sailors? 6 drunken sailors of course. This one is alot of fun.

The only song that I know of that has both of them is Voiceplay's cover of "Just Sing". If/when you do it, be sure to turn on the captions. They included information about who everyone is, as well as a few snarky remarks.

The other miners did try to save John; they started back down with jacks and timbers to prop up the beam that had broken and put everyone in danger. A rope wouldnt't have worked, because John would have had to let go of the timber he was holding up to grab it, and the ceiling would have collapsed on him. Unfortunately there just wasn't time for a rescue...his strength gave out before the others could reach him.😔But he redeemed himself and was remembered as a hero, hence the memorial. Coal mines were horrible, filthy, insanely dangerous places to work back in the day, the companies that owned them were brazenly cruel to their workers, and the body count was very high. (And I have no doubt whatsoever that even with modern equipment and regulations, the job is still no picnic today.)

As people were trying to explain, John "redeemed himself from what crimes he committed" by sacrificing himself to save twenty other men. Mineshafts as such were often miles long, so getting from point a to point b was never an easy task.

  • @Badger77722
    @Badger77722 ปีที่แล้ว

Sounds like you didn't really understand the story being told. If you go to 06:58 of your reaction video and listen to the lyrics, the miners started back down into the mine with tools and equipment for repairs, but the mine collapsed before they could get back down to John. It's a sad story, since John doesn't really seem to have been the "big, bad" dude that his reputation was all about.
On the other hand, it does reflect the actual hard work and danger involved in mining back then (and still today, to a somewhat lesser extent for the danger), because often the mine was the only job available in many smaller towns, and the owners and managers could pretty much dictate working conditions as they saw fit.

Listen to the original, and then this one again. I disliked the original intensely for the same reason that you reacted- I felt John was poorly treated. (I was a fairly young kid at the time, with Strong Opinions, lol.) When Geoff announced that he was covering this song, I was actually kind of disappointed, because my initial response to the song was so negative. But Geoff's handing of the material is different, and John's death feels as though it was given respect in a way that I felt was lacking before. It redeemed the song for me entirely, and it's not the only time Geoff has done this. Monster Mash was the same way, and now it's one of my favorite songs by Geoff. You want to see his goofy side? That's actually a great example of it. And he dances! Both as his clones and as himself, with Kathy, his wife. Kudos if you spot her before her 'entrance.' 😉
