  • Adding a window or a recess to a book cover or a box is a little challenging but can really add another dimension to your project. This video will show you a few ways to deal with the challenge. In addition, you'll see a few ways to embellish the covers of your projects.
Here's the regular Crop-a-dile you see in the video...

...and here's the Big Bite Crop-a-dile:

    Lots of eyelets :)

This is my very favorite source for archival Washi tape:

Here is a great source for the bookboard, or binder's board, used to construct the boxes and book covers. You can get it in several different thicknesses.

And if you're tired of cutting bookboard by hand (particularly the thicker bookboard used for making boxes and slipcases) this inexpensive guillotine works wonderfully and is a real time and hand-saver. It also makes trimming your textblocks a snap.

Here's a link to the soft weights you see me using in the video:

Also a great source for PVA adhesive:

If you are making your own bookcloth, here's a source for the rice paper you'll need:

I'm not sure how often you check your TH-cam comments, but I just wanted to thank you for sharing all of your knowledge. I took a book making class years ago (a very expensive one!), and your videos and website have not only reminded me what I had forgotten (basically everything) - but taught me so much more! 💗

My grandson love legos. I have to make a box to hold the legos that he can build on, fabulous idea. Thank you.

A box to hold legos with a lego lid... that is a fantastic idea! Why didn't I think of that?? I'd love to see a picture of that when you finish it! (My email is in the description up above.) :-))

Instructive, clear, helpful video - no frills, only mastery to solve a problem rarely addressed by other people.

Thank you! I know I have been a little lax and lazy about making new videos lately. I got a 3D printer, so I've been busy making bookmaking tools with it. :) I'll have a video about that coming pretty soon. ;-)

loved this video! would you consider a similar one but for round windows? i'm curious about how to fold the bookcloth over the edge of the cutout for a rounded shape :)

I always enjoy your videos. Great information and easy to follow. I am interested in the ruler you used about 1 minute in.. Is it from Talas?

    • @KristiWarrenHandmadeBooks
      @KristiWarrenHandmadeBooks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes! :) I have two of these, a two-footer and a four-footer, although they don't seem to have those sizes right now. (www.talasonline.com/Safety-Edge-Cutting-Guide) I bought them after carelessly slicing off part of my thumb while cutting bookcloth! :-O

A most excellent tutorial, thank you! I have made fabric and paper covered photo frames and try to deal with those pesky inner corners; I love the washi tape idea. Where do you find archival washi tape?
LOVE your projects with Legos. I am a mom of four boys, now grown, but there are still plenty of Legos around here!

    • @KristiWarrenHandmadeBooks

Thank you, Joyce! Marilyn Book, in a post up above, had the idea to make a box to hold all the legos, with the embedded lego platform as the lid. Brilliant idea! Concerning the Washi tape, I have been operating under the belief that it is all archival, but I just did some research and can't find where I got that information originally. I think the paper they are printed on is archival Japanese rice paper (usually Gampi, I think...), but I'm not sure now about the adhesive and I can't find any information about it. But it's so fun to use, I'm going to use it anyway. LOL! If you really wanted to be 100% sure then it would be better to use regular rice paper and your own archival glue (PVA, wheat paste, Nori, etc.)

Hey Joyce - I just contacted my favorite source for Washi tape (wintertimecrafts.etsy.com) and she assures me that the paper and adhesive of her custom Washi tapes are acid free. All of the tapes that you see me use come from her awesome shop. :)
