  • So after giving it some serious thought, I finally bit the bullet and picked up some KMC XD229 Machete Crawl Beadlocks for my 2015 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. There are a lot of benfits to running a beadlock out on the trail and in this video I share with you thought behind picking these wheels and some of the pros and cons.

    I personally like the polished aluminum. Seems everyone has black these days and the polished wheels really make you stand out. Nice choice!

      There are more black rims on Jeeps than polished aluminum for sure... Thank you!

    Just wanted to point out that you only air down in snow if the snow is *extremely* deep and you want to float over the top. If it's medium to light snow, you want to run normal pressure; this allows the tires to cut through the snow and make contact with the surface below.

      This is also an advantage of running narrower tires (though still tall) in the winter. It is a trick for a lot of old school 4X4 guys in snowy areas. If your footprint is too big you can become a sled and actually lose traction in the snow.

    • @IronskullGM
      @IronskullGM 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I live in Vermont on a class IV road. It's not uncommon to have very deep drifts.
      I always run 40 psi in the winter. Under the snow is ice, usually glaze ice. I've never had any benefit of trying to drive on top of the snow. It's a very difficult task to do, especially when driving uphill or sliding downhill. The key is gearing and shifting. Let the engine do the work and keep the wheels turning to maintain traction. Which means avoid the brake as much as possible. Now if you are going to air down to ride the top of the snow, beware of slides and objects under the snow. Also do not use knobby tires in snow, go for a nice all season or winter tire with lots of sieves and small grooves. Studded tires are more for places that have a lot of ice. Glaze Ice is some scary stuff. For that you need chains and studs.

    I was full intent on going black But when they Method 106 beadlocks came out i fell in love with the bronze and couldnt resist ordered as soon as they were available they are sitting waiting for my tires to get here and get installed.

    Polished aluminum bead locks look awesome, it’s nice to see that look come back, I grew up with Crager wheels on our hot rods and those classic American wheels, I’m considering getting bead locks at the time of writing this, the hard part is going to find a shop that can balance them out for me, and you are correct Northridge 4 X 4 is awesome I’ve been dealing with them for many years.

    Great looking wheel on a great looking Jeep. I ran beadlocks on my TJ rock crawler and they performed exactly as they were designed. My only problem with beadlocks is that they are a PAIN IN THE ASS to clean. Getting the mud out from behind the bead ring is an exercise in futility, to say the least.

    Love watching your videos on how your jeep build is transitioning. The new wheels look great. I'm a big fan of the chromed/polished wheel also. Can't wait to see the new bumpers and fenders, that will make it all come together for you. Should give it a very aggressive stance. Thanks for all the work you put into your videos, I really appreciate it. Because of your videos, I am going to get a couple of Auxbeam light bars for my truck, thank you for all of your product reviews. I'm a big fan of your live car/off road shows and videos and rig walk around S that you do.👍

  • @ForensicPI
    @ForensicPI 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Those looks GREAT. I have black pro-comps, and today they look terrible with all those gouges, so one day I will do this. And the bonus is you can replace the rim if they get real bad. One thing I noticed was the tire guy in the video. Since these wheels are aluminum I’d be concerned that someone would be too quick with the mounting, and strip-out the threading with the air gun. Aluminum is much more sensitive to cross threading, especially with an air gun. In other words, I would surely want them to get each bolt started by hand first.

    • @TrailRecon
      @TrailRecon  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are so correct, starting each both my hand is essential. These beadlock threads have steel liners and with 3/8th inch bolt they are pretty solid. Something we were discussing while he was installing the last wheel. He said he has has some of the smaller 5/16th bolts break on him in the past. Thanks!

    I like the blacked out look, but for me, I didn't know, until I started watching your channel that this style of wheel was so you could deflate your tire to get better traction over rocks and deep sand! I did have a man tell me how he was stuck in mud in a 4x4 and had some decent tires on, and he had to deflate them to almost flat and walked it right out. His reasoning was that, instead of the mud filling up the tire tread, it would push out as it turned because of the way the rubber of the tread would "buckle" (for lack of a better way of describing it) and push the mud out. I had no idea people were deflating their tires to go off road in sand, mud and rocks.
    What do you do do get better traction in snow and ice? Do you do the same? I'm pretty green when it comes to off road like yall do!

    Those look fantastic with the Silver color of your rig. I think you made the right choice.
    I swapped out my stock factory aluminum rims on my TJ for MT Classic III's in black and it really darkened the look, even though my TJ is yellow. It made a huge difference that I'm not all that happy with, but there they are! Anyway, I think the aluminum finish with the beadlocks look great. Good luck with them and lets see them run some trails. Beadlocks will be a real advantage for snow, at 5psi!

    • @mariodesmo

    Well Brad, definately look great. And most definately (I ‘think’) the HARDEST choice for me would be deciding between the Black vs polished aluminum. They BOTH would look great as long as the BACK color wasn’t a ‘glossy’ gloss. I aslo would have liked you to SPEAK MORE ABOUT the “disclaimer” and ‘why’ there not considered for “highway use” specifically. ‘Course I can do the leg work I suppose...just would’ve been a nice topic to your vid. Great job though!

    Looks is always debatable and I am very happy for you Brad, seeing you proud like a kid. Can you still go through the squeeze at AB DSP? I had issues already with 4.5" of backspacing. Also, welcome to the world of dirty Jeeps now. Every puddle will likely cause you to close all windows or a dirty elbow.at least. You drive with closed windows anyways? Ok, then the door handle can be so filthy and dirty at times that is simply becomes a nuisance. I still have normal wheels and always go down to 15psi and never popped a tire from the bead. Would love extra protection from the ring though as I recently ripped off a valve stem. Changed now from long TPMS valves to simple, ordinary but short valve stems. Thanks to J&T Tire Pros in Borrego Springs for helping us after their office hours.

      Ya, as I was posting that clip of the squeeze I was asking myself the same question. I'll be doing it again after the weather cools, guess we'll see. That sucks to hear about your valve stem, a great benefit of beadlocks is that the valve are very well protected.

      Brad, I trust you will be widening the squeeze for all of us now with your new protected wheels ;-)

    What about upgrading your spare tire carrier? I don't think waiting to long would be a good idea. I think a Teraflex would be a reasonable option.

      I think I have been putting it off too long and now that I added a few more pounds back there, I need to get that sorted.... good suggestion!

    Perfect Jeep! Like these color combo combination. I just pick up 2016 JKUS Granite, with 2.8CRD (unfortunately i haven't chance to pick up a Rubicon this time :( ) and on mine are 18'' wheels. My first mod was to put some BFGT AT KO2 in 255/70/18 not MT's, because its my DD, but in the future, after maybe some leveling kit i will try to switched to 17'' wheels and some beefier tires like yours STT's.
    Anyway, i'm watching your videos, and progress with your Jeep. I hope that the bumper will not destroy this look (in my opinion standard bumpers are really cool looking, specially in US version - all steel)
    Best regards from PL!

    I personally prefer the darker colors on wheels, they look more aggressive and mean. Plus, scraping them only adds to the look of meanness.

    They look great and very functional, but I gotta stick with the black wheels, a little too shiny for me for a wrangler, great videos though, always enjoy watching them!

    I'm a black wheel guy but I have to admit they look awesome on your Jeep. Questions; what good are bead lockers if they only lock the outer rim but not the inner?

    Awesome looking wheel. I’m a bit partial to the polished look, though my everyday driver has all black wheels. (trendy thing for lazy people) “chrome won’t get ya home but a little style will make the mile!”...lol. That was dumb.

    The beadlocks look great! my only beef is trying to keep them clean. I live in Georgia so we dont have a lot of rock crawling here, mostly mud and clay so Im not sure if the beadlock is the right choice for me.

  • @ThatguyVal
    @ThatguyVal 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The hardest question I’m trying to get an answer for is do you have to balance them? Some people say no and some say use bb’s. I’m only concerned because nobody will mount beadlocks by me so I’ll have to do it myself but I don’t want them to shake on the highway if they’re not balanced. HELP PLEASE!!!
