Is it fair to compare the movies though? Ben Wheatly didn't set out to re-make the Hitchcock movie. He adapted the book. I thought Rebecca (2020) was kind of so and so, but far from terrible. I agree with (sorry I don't know her name) Deep focus lens that the movie lacks any sort of... point. Ultimately it didn't feel like a Ben Wheatly film, and that was my biggest dissapointment.

Cuckoos Nest might be my favorite movie ever. I saw the trailer for that show and wanted to wipe the trailer from my memory. I feel so sorry for anyone who watched the whole show.
What I liked about the original is how effectively Hitchcock dramatized how economic dependence (and sexism) can make an adult feel like a child. I'm not sure if that's going to work quite as well in 2020 as it did in 1940. The movie that really explored a lot of Rebecca's them in 2020 was Invisible Man with Elizabeth Moss.
Just by watching the trailer for "Rebecca" (2020), it just looks and "feels" like one of those generic, made-for-TV Agatha Christie adaptations : overrated drivel for quaint, Sunday-evening, domestic distractions.
Joan Fontaine's outstanding performance carried the 1940 Hitchcock film, IMO. But I also loved Olivier's troubled and angry portrayal of Maxim de Winter.
I first saw the original eons ago on a late night network movie showcase, as a budding teen movie buff. Commercial interruptions aside I was immediately hooked. At that time my only other Hitchcock experience was Psycho, and Rebecca was SUCH a contrast. I know it has problems, but AH's films---ALL of them---became an obsession. Was unaware of a remake until your video, but I love your brutal honesty here. The masochist in me wants to see this NOW, lol! Love your passion for film. Very insightful videos, always.

Didn't even know there was a new Rebecca. And I will soon forget that it exists. I absolutely love that instead of calling it the "Golden Age", you call it the "Old Period" (9:55 mark). That's a better term for the Hollywood of then; their studio moguls flattered themselves as modern Greek gods without taking note how primitively said gods behaved in those myths. Or that their own behavior fit those myths to a tee. (That David O. Selznick was a pain in the ass to creative personnel is my polite way of putting it.) So from now on I'm borrowing the less flashy "Old Period" term from you.
Deep, you are so right, "Rebecca" is an endearing classic. It had a ring of novelty and originality at the time (1940), and it has stood the test of time very well. I was a little curious about the remake, but I wasn't expecting very much from it. but still.... there are so many possibilities with that story for an imaginative director. But to even dare to touch to a Hitchcock as iconic as "Rebecca" requires real ideas, real talent, and actual ideas. The original succeeds at one of the best known aspects of his style: creating suspense. The tension about the real person under the image of the cold, weirdly odd and creepy governess (whose name I don't remember) is at timrs unbearable, and is an essential element of the story that should be developed as well in the remake, I hope, as it is so unique and memorable. Apparently, it didn't fall in the right hands .. I don't know if I'm even interested in finding out for myself. Perhaps.... if I'm bored and have nothing else to watch, which is virtually ....NEVER ?

I love the 1997 TV mini-series most. The one with Charles Dance and Emilia Fox (best known for the Silent Witness crime series I guess) and Diana Rigg. I have understood it wasn't received very well by critics, but I happened to stumble on this version in 2020 and really liked it. Edit: And of course, I like and remember the 1979 classic. Having been born in the former Soviet Union I saw it first on Finnish TV in the1980s. The 1997 version is much less of a crime drama, somewhat more low-key and introverted.
Mine too. The absolute definition of breath-holding suspense, and such iconic performances and wonderful chemistry from Ingrid Bergaman and Cary Grant. Among their very best, I think.

I saw Rebecca in the cinema... Me and some old folks left looking like ghosts What a fucking nightmare! The chemistry between the stars was like hydrochlauric acid being thrown in my face ... and wheatley’s directing had the charm of a rotting teddy bear at someones graveside. I'm glad you're pissed off too...

I'd be hard pressed to decide which was worse, Rebecca 2020, or Persuasion 2022. What is wrong with filmmakers these days? That said, I've always been so swept up by the Hitchcock film that it's hard for me to even see the flaws. The shift away from Ms. DeWinter makes total sense, though. I don't know if you'll see a comment on such an old video, but I am curious as to what else you see as flaws (besides the obvious Hays Code meddling with the ending). I love the mix of genres in the film, but I suppose it does have some pretty odd tonal shifts.

I watched the original film as a kid in 1974 and loved it. It also scared me. I watched this new remake last year and I fully agree, it's a piece of shit.
All I had to do was see the color correction in the movies advertisements and I figured it was some sort of trash. Just like the new "The Great Gatsby" Dumb colors beget bad films.

I have to say I agree with you entirely, especially about the second half of the movie. Hitchcock could have done a better job remembering whom his main character was. I would have liked to have seen more of the main finding her own kind of strength as a character. Her own strengths being her loyalty, her kindness and compassion. The strength she shows at the very beginning of the movie as she calls out to stop a total stranger from jumping from a cliff. Here is how I'd want to see it done. During the revised second half, as Maxim grows more exhausted, showing more vulnerability and hurt, she assumes the roll of protector. Because the point is she's not Rebecca. Rebecca may be glamorous and beautiful and be possessed of a shallow grace but the main is what Maxim actually needs. She is loving, she is strong. Rebecca is cruel and weak. We get hints of this during the second half, such as her fake faint in the court room when Maxim is becoming overwrought and self-incriminating. Also what if they changed up the burning of the manor and it's the main racing back afraid Maxim has been consumed in the blaze? Though upon thinking about it further, I wonder if the manor burning down in the end is even needed. I like the idea of Maxim just saying "Let's not go back. Let's start fresh" or something like that as an indication that he's done being controlled by Rebecca, by Mrs. Danvers and by Manderley itself. I see Rebecca largely as an allegory on escaping abuse. I like the idea of the final shot of the movie as Mrs. Danvers scowling out the window. She's won. She's alone at Manderley with Rebecca's ghost and no one to torture but herself because her victims just went NC. I think the reason the remake screwed up making the main more active is because in our modern dialogue on "strong female characters" 🤮we only recognize one way to be strong. And that is the "independent woman." The idea that a woman could be strong within the context of a relationship in which she is actually caring seems alien to so many screen writers.

Question: Is that glass of fermented grapes a reaction to the disappointment of watching the new Rebecca or are you a connoisseur of good wine to enhance your viewing experience? 15:55 Good point. Sadly this is often crudely dismissed with:"It's a movie, not a realistic documentary."
@@deepfocuslens Holy shit, that's right! I grew up poor as shit so our couches were always covered in plastic. I thought it was just a Latin thing. There was a good part of the couch which was reserved for guests only (I'm not shitting you) and the bad part was immediate family. Sticky, sharp, cold, confusing Latin couch culture. I'm sure Paulie would sympathize.
I'd rather stick to the 1940 classic. And there's one made for TV version {1997} that's also good. Or you could just.. Read the book 😏 You can't beat the classics though.
If there is anything to be improved on in the 1940 version, it would be the performance of Olivier, who is a bit wooden to play the husband with a secret past who appears to love or not love his new wife. It's a challenging part for any male actor, who has to not give anything away and still show his dual, sympathetic and alienating sides. The actor in this remake also doesn't do it any better.
It's also sad because the director has made some exceptional films with some extremely low budgets. I highly recommend trying Kill List and A Field in England. This film does not represent his finest work.
well, these period movies are usually a good excuse for us to see a lot of people smoking and lighting cigarettes, but I have to say...not a lot of smoking in here... As for the movie itself, couldn't finish it, it's a very bad movie. And sometimes we learn more from weak movies.... Not the case.

I agree-new Rebecca is terrible on so many levels. IT SUCKS. The best are the original with Joan Fontaine and the 90's PBS version with Charles Dance as Maxim, Emilia Fox, and the great Dianna Rigg as Mrs. Danvers.

@@deepfocuslens Holy shit, that's right! I grew up poor as shit so our couches were always covered in plastic. I thought it was just a Latin thing. There was a good part of the couch which was reserved for guests only (I'm not shitting you) and the bad part was immediate family. Sticky, sharp, cold, confusing Latin couch culture. I'm sure Paulie would sympathize.
I'd rather stick to the 1940 classic. And there's one made for TV version {1997} that's also good. Or you could just.. Read the book 😏 You can't beat the classics though.

If there is anything to be improved on in the 1940 version, it would be the performance of Olivier, who is a bit wooden to play the husband with a secret past who appears to love or not love his new wife. It's a challenging part for any male actor, who has to not give anything away and still show his dual, sympathetic and alienating sides. The actor in this remake also doesn't do it any better.
i like the creepy deep breathing white noise in the audio. is a ghost probably. they not like ur critique of the movie.

It's also sad because the director has made some exceptional films with some extremely low budgets. I highly recommend trying Kill List and A Field in England. This film does not represent his finest work.

well, these period movies are usually a good excuse for us to see a lot of people smoking and lighting cigarettes, but I have to say...not a lot of smoking in here... As for the movie itself, couldn't finish it, it's a very bad movie. And sometimes we learn more from weak movies.... Not the case.

There was a decent tv mini series made in the 1970's. Jeremy Brett was excellent as Max De Winter.
I agree-new Rebecca is terrible on so many levels. IT SUCKS. The best are the original with Joan Fontaine and the 90's PBS version with Charles Dance as Maxim, Emilia Fox, and the great Dianna Rigg as Mrs. Danvers.
