    Finally a ballast video where you can actually see stuff clearly....

    Great video. And really glad to see proper confined space measures in place. Too many people ignore those measures and usually end up killing more people when rescue efforts are attempted.

    Great to see the safety gear and procedures and crystal clear water in ballast tank.

      If the water was cloudy/muddy etc would this potentially indicate rust?

    Only found your channel yesterday and already hooked on it haha, always been really interested in container ships want to work on them, you now any way doing it in uk? Never really understood how to look

    • @BryanBoyle
      @BryanBoyle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Welcome to the channel! Glad you have enjoyed it..I work in the American Merchant Marine so I can’t speak exactly for how the UK works. Most likely you would need to apply for a Mariners document which would require some classes and other training. To become an officer requires years of training which can be done at an academy or by taking all the classes on your own and having the required sea time as an unlicensed crew member. I always recommend the website: www.gcaptain.com but I’m not sure if that covers the UK as well. If not, try googling some maritime schools in the UK and see what you come up with. Good Luck!

    Do you normally take tank depth water soundings to see if the tank is flooded or the level of water in them. We had eductors in line with the tanks to empty them or to change the ballast if we had to. thanks. That looked like an eductor where you came up out of the tank. Except ours were run by fire main water pressure that created the suction. Guess yours are all done electronically. I remember crawling through those small holes when I was a welder in Beaumont tx. back in the early 80's welding on Jack up oil rigs. That was a lot of fun. ha ha. :-( Thanks so much for the tour and more memories. It was great. They must think your crazy doing videos. :-)

    • @BryanBoyle
      @BryanBoyle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are electronic sounding gauges, but manual soundings with a tape are still done to make sure the tanks are empty before they are opened for inspection. I ended up having to climb through various tanks 8 times that day which is not the most enjoyable experience!

    • @BryanBoyle
      @BryanBoyle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It can smell bad depending on how much mud is stuck in them. I usually smell bad after leaving them due to all the sweat!

    What kind of checks do you perform before entering such a confined space? How is that space ventilated?

    • @BryanBoyle
      @BryanBoyle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The space is ventilated for 24 hours before entering using large industrial fans. We then test the atmosphere for proper oxygen levels and dangerous gasses. We keep a standby crew member with radio contact outside the tank, and anyone entering the tank wears an oxygen/gas meter on them.

    • @alexandrupanica3761
      @alexandrupanica3761 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BryanBoyle you could fill up/empty the tank, check the gas meter readings and enter. It would be faster rather than ventilate it for 24 hours. What do you think?

    It's probably a dumb question but why there is so much water inside the ship ?

    • @BryanBoyle
      @BryanBoyle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      These are water ballast tanks. We fill them with the ocean water to help keep the ship stable and balanced. They can be difficult to completely drain when when we enter them for inspection which is why there is some water in them.
