Man, I wish I had a winder like that, would have made that crystal radio kit easier to make when I was way younger. Sadly I couldn’t make it, it just languished after trying to wrap the wire around the drum.
I have designed and had built a very similar product. We used CNC winding to achieve a close packed optimal stacking, where every wire has a determined position as from the CAD model. I did not like the potting and vacuuming hassle. Currently I am back to working with metals exclusively.
TH-cam has recommended this to me for 3 months straight on almost every video. Finally watched the damn thing and honestly, about what i expected from the thumbnail but completely different from how i thought they were made

If you make the mold not as tall, you can save on epoxy and an extra step of having to use the lathe.
Some of the dimensions are different, but you're right, it would save a lot of money.
