I totally get it! Our kids are 21yrs, 27 yrs, & 32yrs and we raised all of them with our own traditions and we haven’t really gotten a lot of gifts and things since our oldest was 5 yrs old. That’s the beauty of having children they give us the gift of starting things anew but on our terms. Well said mommy and daddy. She’s blessing your lives in unique ways that you didn’t think would happen but appreciate them nonetheless. The price of the gift isn’t what’s important but the thought behind the gift is what matters. That’s the lesson I got from my parents although my childhood was NOT the best I understood that the unconditional love that was given to me made up for some of the bad times. Looking at the excitement and humbleness of your daughter while opening her gifts proves that you found the perfect balance you wanted her to accept with receiving her gifts. John, time will absolutely heal old wounds with the mercy and grace of God. I'm the only one not married or have children (my only sibling not married passed away), so it's a very lonely time for me. First year I didn't decorate or put up a tree.

And by me being a Christian, I love Christmas! Regardless of the consumerism and commercialization of Christmas, I keep in mind that I celebrate the coming of the savior.
