    I had a 66 GTA in 74-75 Bone stock when I got it down to the factory embossed FORD mufflers, 17 year old kid did not deserve a great car like that. Those cars would set you back in the seat at 90 but only ran about 115 with 3.50 gears.

    Ford buyers did not flock to intermediate muscle cars the way Pontiac, Chevy and Mopar buyers did. The big block Fairlanes and Torinos never made half the sales of the GTO, SS 396 or Road Runner. Ford buyers seemed busy buying small block Mustangs, these outsold all the other "Pony" cars.

    Nice car. Back in 77 I purchased a 66 Mercury Cyclone GT with the same 390 but it had A/C, AM/FM monaural radio & a 3 speed manual. A 4 speed would have been better as I couldn't start out in 1st gear on a wet pavement, it would just spin, LOL. Being younger & dumber back in the day one of the 1st things I did when I got it was cut off the A/C belt, LOL..... Now adays if I had that car the A/C would be working overtime.... My uncle Jack had ordered a 66 or 67 Fairlane GT with what was supposed to be a 390, but when he picked it up it had gone unnoticed by everyone including him that it wasnt a 390 but a beastly 427 under the hood. His brother inlaw was the first to notice the 427 hood emblems and decal on the aircleaner.. a check of the numbers confirmed the 390 was not a 390 and it was instantly understood why it was so quick. Uncle Jack, being the mischievious type that he was, quickly ordered a set of 390 hood emblems and a 390 aircleaner confusing the Ford dealerships parts department, as using things like that for wall art was unheard of back then. The car was loaned to his brother inlaw in about 70 and he unfortunately rolled it totalling it out. Its engine, tranny, and rearend got swapped into uncle Jacks beater 40 Ford pickup which he played with for a year then pulled ththe 66 parts back out of and put the original worn out 40 parts back in and sold the truck. He later put the parts into a 65 Ford Galaxie 500XL convertible for his wife, and in the late 90's the car was sold during their divorce and was not heard of by any of the family since.

      Very torquey and reliable/durable engine. There were various versions, induction or cams and not all were the same but they all did a good job. Every motor has some deficiencies and they had oil leak problems sometimes, just like most engines back then. I built up my GTA and put a pretty big cam in it. Still couldn't kill the torque. The select shift trans. shifter -- did all Fords from that era have this? It's kind of similar to the one on the Oldsmobile Hurst from the late 70s and early 80s. I wish today's cars would have this feature. I'd have so much fun with it.

    • @helpful5539
      @helpful5539 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      All it is is a position for 1st, one for 2nd and one for Drive, which would auto shift 1-2-3. Some cars did not have as set of selection like GM's so they may not downshift or upshift like you may want but were similar. We have similar on many vehicles even nowadays but it was easier when we just had 3 gears to select from. The 1-2-D was real common on pretty much all Fords from 67 on. The earlier shift setup was not like this and you had to know how to get it to hold 1st or 2nd for hard acceleration.

I put in a 427 stylr dual point distributor parts kit and had it set up on a sun distributor mschine to Holman-Moody specs, rejetted the holley dual feed, and put on a set Montgomery Wards recap slicks in the rear. Car would run mid to 14,s @ 101mph It had a strong topend in high gear. The intake rush sounded like a 440 magnum with that factory low restriction air cleaner. I could not afford headers for it back then, it really had a lot more potential, but I was too poor to do much to it, but I did keep ittuned well and put it on many SS 396 chevelles back in the day.
