White Balance and low light performance are top notch features of SL2-S. It is heavier and slower auto focus than Sony. However when I see my pictures from SL2-S, I am blown away. My Sony A7IV just stays still at home.
For anyone considering an SL System camera, I would say this is Leica's "technical" system. Yes, it has today's modern features like an amazing EVF, IBIS and 47MP (SL2). But overall, the real difference when transitioning from a 24MP M10 to a 24MP SL2-S, is in the more intentional or technical approach this platform demands (compared to a rangefinder). I shot Nikon pro bodies from 2000-2010 and can say the SL System is by far SMALLER & LIGHTER than pro DSLRs. It is NOT over priced IMHO. Nikon sold every flagship pro body from the D1 thru D3 for $5k USD. And that was Y2K money! Now, both Canon and Nikon demand $6500 for flagship offerings. And compared to current M bodies, the SL2-S is, as they say, cheap as chips! BTW, I own/shoot the original SL(601), which I purchased to digitize my M-glass. It is NOTHING like shooting a rangefinder, so be prepared!
I’m looking at the original SL vs the SL2-s to use specifically with M glass and occasionally using an autofocus lens when needed. Is the newer body worth spending the extra money? Thanks!
The battery - I just think that's the coolest thing ever. I wish all cameras would design the battery like that. As someone who travels full time though... the whole system is too big and bulky. Looks amazing though.
My widest M lens is 24mm Elmar. I wondered if it works fine with SL given the fact M lenses sit so close to the sensor and M cameras have special sensor type to address it.
I picked up a Leica X-U last year and what I loved the most was the manual focus assist. It was before focus peaking I guess, so it magnifies just a center portion of the frame. I love that because I can maintain my framing while focusing. When cameras fill the whole viewfinder with the magnified image I hate it because my framing could be slipping while I focus.. I just find it annoying. I was curious with these SL cameras - do they have an option to just magnify the center part when manually focusing, or do you just get the magnified section filling the whole EVF? I hope that makes sense…
@@AskMOTT TBH it would suck for commercial work. You’d be way better off with a housing. However - as an invincible everyday carry while in rainy environments or situations where you may suddenly fall in the water it’s great. I used it in Cozumel and the freedom it gave me to hop in and out of the water doing street photography was amazing. I wish I’d had it on the Inca trail when a light rain killed my “weather sealed” Fuji.
@@AskMOTT The manual focus implementation was so good on it, that’s why I wanted to know if the SL2/s handled manual focus similarly. I like that with the XU I can still see the whole frame while focusing
Had a chance to go to the Leica SF store and check it out in person. First thing that blew me away was the EVF. It truly has to be seen to be believed. I literally said out loud “oh my god…” in surprise. I REALLY liked how big the EVF is too, I had. I problems and didn’t need to squint to see what I’m looking at. If someone had me close my eyes and then put the viewfinder to my eye then asked me to open it, I’d nearly think I was looking through a glass pentaprism. It’s really that amazing and realistic. The typ 020 EVF I had for my TL2 seems prehistoric in comparison. I was diehard about getting an M camera, but now after the sl2s, I’m reconsidering. For someone that wears an XL glove size, it definitely fit my hands better overall than the M. The features include everything you need and nothing that you don’t. Also tried an M lens on the body with adapter and it was awesome too. I wish the L mount lenses were a bit smaller is my only gripe, not sure why they need to be so damn big in comparison to M lenses. Unless you seriously need to scratch the vintage shooting itch with an M camera, I’d strongly urge someone to take a look at this sl2s
Justin: Great video! I own the SL2 and M11 but I will purchasing the SL2-S Reporter. I moved to Prescott Arizona and trying to rebuild my photography business. I owned all the Nikon D models but the Z9 really turned me off. The EVF was terrible especially in the studio and on really bright days that we experience in Arizona. Moving to Leica was a little changeling but I feel very comfortable with the camera now. However, I still find myself struggling at times but that is to be expected I suppose. In closing, I really enjoy your videos. Outstanding work sir!
Just came home from my first shoot with this camera. I am super impressed. I just had some issues with tethering with Capture. I am praying that I can figure this out ASAP as I want to keep this camera as one of my workhorse bodies.

You present a good sense of who this is for. October 2021 - are you still shooting the X1D? If not, is it because your business needs have changed a bit (less hotel work during pandemic), or is it because you are looking sideways at the SL system for corporate stills work too? Just curious - no judgement here. :-)
I’m still happy w my X1D for hotels and resorts although if I could it over again I’d probably consider investing in an SL2 for my commercial work and use my M lenses and keep it all one big happy family.

Hello Justin, this video has just about pushed me to buy the SL2-S, which I'm planning on using with Sigma DG DN 24mm f/2.0 and 35mm F/2.0. But I have one more question that I'd like to get answered... I want to confirm that it is possible to customize the front wheel for aperture and the back wheel for shutter speed, to better mimic how I shoot with a Nikon Z6 (i.e., not have to change muscle memory). The factory settings are opposite to how I would like to program this camera. The SL2-S manual says, "....The functions of the two setting wheels can be swapped." However, before I drop 4K+ USD on this camera (and another 2k plus on the Leica 24-70 lens), I want to be 100% sure that this is a case from someone who already owns this camera. Thank you so much!
