Apparently, several years ago in the country of Georgia, they had a problem with overcrowded prisons so they made a deal with the church where those convicted of minor offenses had the option of serving the rest of their sentences in a local monastery if they were well-behaved. I'm hazy on the details but to the best of my knowledge, this actually worked and many of those inmates actually enjoyed the time they spent there. It wouldn't surprise me if some of them stayed and went on to become fully tonsured monks.
Only in Eastern Europe. I love this as crazy as it sounds. So much better than the US releasing thousands of inmates back on to the streets due to being overcrowded only to rack up reoffences, assaults, larcenies, and murders. :(
Ever since early of age, very often I seek God with love for truth. Though a Roman Catholic, my heart's more inclined to become Orthodox somedayand day by day of reading church history, life of saints,and the inspired word of God,the more I deny the world and its passions. I hope to become a Monk someday as a limp from stroke and have my heart full of love for truth grows stronger.
Please pray for me, my husband wants to leave me and if he does so, I think I might consider dedicating the rest of my life in constant service, prayer, and repentance.

Same but (nothing against Bojan) but I read pretty much exactly this on a Wiki. My real questions are more about daily tasks like how one bathes or eats. I know I could just approach a monastery but I’m shy and like to be prepared. Bojan sure did add some humour though.
@@juliaboon9741 Don't worry about being prepared. You'll never go if that's the case. Just go. They are the most humble people. Also, go there to work and help if you have a chance. You'll develop relationships with them very quickly and they'll be happy to answer. Just know that most monastics practice silence out of humility. So, there is usually a monastic who receives visitors at larger monasteries as to keep the rest of the monastics in prayerful silence. So, don't just walk up to any monastic. Call before you go and let them know you're coming so they can receive you properly. There are nuns who by choice decide to never clean their hair again out of humility. They keep the fasts and do not nibble through the day although in some of the monasteries I've visited, they drink copious amounts of expresso (Shout out St. Siluoan's in Sonora, Ca.). Just realize that whatever the practice is, monasticism is humble acceptance and obedience and prayerful silence and dutifulness.

If you follow your spiritual fathers guidance, you have nothing to worry about. First of all, tell him your thoughts and desire and he will help you with anything. Monasticism is all about obedience, so the first one that you must obey, is your father in God. If you have not yet have one, then try to find. All the other things, will come naturally. Don’t be afraid, neither anxious. If you want to ask anything, I will answer (if I know, of course!) I am getting ready to become a novice, so maybe I can help you.

It takes time and you must have a real determination to do it by actually staying in a monastery for some time, a week and even more is correct as Bojan says. My son is a monk so I know it takes time and my son has been a monk for over 20 years so I have some insight into this process. Each monastery has differences so you need to work closely work with the elders so that you understand what is expected from you so you can honestly comit.

Recently my spiritual father was transferred to a different parish over 4 hours away and I'm having a very difficult time connecting with the other priest (we had 2 priests until recently). He is much older than my spiritual father and uses rather archaic language. The older parishioners love him but the younger folks, myself included, have been having a hard time understanding him, especially his homilies. It has been difficult staying in contact with my spiritual father via digital communication as he's been extremely busy attending to his new parish. You had mentioned that your spiritual father lived in another country. So I thought I would ask if you happen to have any advice on this issue or have encountered a similar problem. Thanks.

I am Welsh, but like the welsh saints celtic Britain Patrick (Padrig in welsh) or St nicholas the wonderworker. Or st seraphim because of his teaching on praying the lestovka to the Mother of God.

I thought it was cringe and very odd ceremony and it reminded me so much of when moses witnessed his people worship the golden calf. I like one part though. The bull I think the bull was Cool and the metal music kicked in as if a massive boss battle was about to take place was pretty cool.
Didn't there be images of cherubim, bulls etc. in the Tabernacle and in Solomon's temple? So the 2nd commandment is not about forbidding images, but the point was that they were not allowed to do images of God. Why? Because God was not incarnated at that time! When God appeared to the Israelites at the Mount Sinai, they didn't see any form, and therefore they were not allowed to make images of God - images of angels and animals and plants and humans were not banned in themselves. But when Jesus Christ came in flesh, God got a visible form in Him, and therefore Christians have depicted Christ in many images from very beginning. Making images of God the Father or the Holy Spirit is still heretical (and that's where Roman Catholics and some Protestants have gone astray). The 2nd commandment can be understood also in other way, but that's enough "storytelling" for now.

There is not normally a distinction between a novice and a Postulant in most communities, some communities do make a distinction but it is normally just considered part of the novitiate. If it is spoken about it is a way of helping Westerners understand the process.

No. Actually there is a great story of Saint Peter and Saint Febronia of Murom who were married. Later in life both become monks and were separated but requested that when they died they’d be buried together. Monks aren’t allowed to be buried together so they didn’t do that when they died. But after they were buried they found that the bodies had been moved and both were found in the same grave! They removed them and put them back but it happened again! So they left them in the same grave!

I don't think there are any Orthodox Augustinian monasteries. I imagine the closest you'd get are the Orthodox Western Rite Benedictine monasteries.
Orthodoxy doesn't have monastic orders like the Catholic Church does. It's just monasticism.
