Which Candidate is Better for Housing: Trump Vs. Harris

It’s no secret the election is coming up and it’s going to have a dramatic impact on the housing market. There are two very different approaches on this issue as well. One is trying to give money to would-be homebuyers and the other is trying to get a handle on inflation.
We’re not in a situation where there’s a lack of willing buyers. Plenty of people would like to buy if they could, just not a 7% interest rate. When you print more money, all it does is make things more expensive. Nothing is truly free. I’m not trying to be biased or push an agenda on this either. We printed 3 trillion in dollars already, adding more money into the equation with homebuying assistance is just going to make the problem worse. The only way that’s corrected is by lowering interest rates and controlling inflation.
My solution is something along these lines. We need to get more inventory out there. The more homes are available, and the more sellers we have who could receive savings and benefits from making a move, the more people would be willing to sell their home. One of the easiest ways to do that would be to have no capital gains taxes when you sell your home. Not everyone would benefit from this, but it would get the needle going on this. And if you have it so the benefits only kick in when it’s a primary occupant, then regular people are at least getting into these homes, not big hedge funds or corporations.
By keeping big business in check by having the equation not pencil out for them, regular, middle-class Americans are the ones who benefit the most on both the buy and sell side. If Wall Street wants to play the game, that’s ok, but there’s a cost associated with that. It’s true Wall Street doesn’t buy homes, but they buy a certain box of homes that ruin opportunities for first time home buyers. If we incentivize them instead to offload some of their portfolio, it goes towards the people who actually need a shot. Hoarding them will cause them to disappear out of the market forever. Fixing that issue is what the middle class needs more than anything.
