I first saw this film in 1999. I was a pathetic college undergraduate back then, depressed, loveless and full of self-contempt. Watching the story of Ben and Sera was very painful. I couldn't stop thinking about this movie for a whole month. At that time, I thought I wanted to drink myself to death, just like him... but I came to realize I just wanted my own Sera, my own angel eyes... Nicholas Cage totally deserved his Oscar. I don't understand what happened to him after this. Since then, we never got to see him deliver anything as magnificent as Ben Sanderson again. Elizabeth Sue should have won the Academy Award too. My heart still stops when I look at her, even now, at her 54 years old, because I will always see the Sera within her. I normally hate this kind of music, but Sting totally nailed it. This song and My One and Only Love are utterly heartbreaking, specially in the context of the movie. And I don't care that the IMDb rating is only 7.6, this will always be my favorite movie. Thank you, Mike Figgis!
@@GeisterundLegenden and Joseph Duncan Yes and no. I did find someone who loves me, but eventually came to realize that there are no Seras in this world. Women will only love you if you love yourself first. There's no way around that. If Ben Sanderson was real, women would be viscerally repulsed by his alcoholic drama and suicidal tendencies. Not even Sera would want him. Maybe that's the reason why so many people dislike this movie, it's very beautiful, but it doesn't match reality. That was a very hard pill to swallow for me. To realize there's no such thing as unconditional love. That you have to treat yourself as someone you care for in order to make others love you. This is something so critical that we should teach it to our boys and girls as soon as possible. Their happiness and fulfillment is contingent on it. That being said, I still think Leaving Las Vegas is one of the most beautiful movies ever made. It remains my favorite by far. She remains one of the most beautiful dreams I ever had, even though she came from someone else's mind. All the best to you, guys!
It is one of those movies that makes you think and ponder. The love that Sera and Ben had was volatile but somehow it was pure. We can walk through life hoping to find just one person who accepts us as we are. A brilliant movie and soundtrack.
I saw this in the theater when it came out when I was 21 or so I have the DVD and soundtrack on.CD. I would love to see it on the big screen again now being 50, divorced and a bit of an alcohol addiction
One of my fav. songs of all time... Unfortunately, I have WAY too many memories from the movie. The movie was way too close to home. I've been sober for almost 39 months now, and still love the song. Just can't watch the movie. Sting is one of the greatest artists of all time. He trancends his genre as if time stands still when he is singing. Magnificent!!! Even at 60, he is still much more talented than some of the newer "young guns" out there. GREAT!!!
Im really glad that all of those people here below me in the comment section loved this deeply personal masterpiece of a film & soundtrack as much as i did. And what a lasting impact this film has made on all of our lives in the years since its release.
To me this is the greatest film ever made. The pathos of love in all its permutations is right here. Loving just because. Loving expecting nothing in return. Loving a dying stranger because there is some explainable magic in your soul. Add to this a sound track of music that is next to none. What a killer film! xo
This film captured the idea of love and put it under a glass bell. This is the concept that I have of true love: to love someone in a disinterested way. Both characters were two "useless people" ... two "waste of society" For this reason a true love was born between them. Unfortunately in the "real world" this happens in 1% of cases. When someone asks me what I mean by love, I say to see this film. Anyway Mike Figgins is a genius, I recommend you to see Mr. Jones with R.Gere, this is also an excellent film "of love"
Nancy, you moved me with your words about this film. Las Vegas, a town where just about anyone could find something fun to do, and on the flip side, desperation, loneliness loss, and death. I love it too, despite the sadness. I keep thinking if I never find the love of my life that I'll do what Cage's character did. I wonder how many people find the meaning in this film that you and I apparently have. I'm hoping I only find the fun there, as it would be a scary place to cash in all my chips...
Such a beautiful and sad movie with excellent heartwrenchingly authentic performances by Liz and Nick. Feel even more sad because John O'Brien died by suicide. May he rest in peace, he suffered so much in this life.
I fell in love with this movie recently after discovering it. I was really sad from watching it. It's very beautiful in its own way and reminds me of how I want to escape my own problems being here in NYC and drink away my sorrows far away from home. Las Vegas was one of these places. I also like the soundtrack which captures the essence of the movie along with the destructive paths of both characters. Watching leaving Las Vegas never gets old.
I think it is my fave movie ever, Sting is perfect on the soundtrack, haunting. I fucking hate that I love it though because the movie is so self-destructive and sad. I think anyone who has been through traumas in their life, we are a little scarred and different from others, suicidal. I've been through hell and had my innocence taken, my life was taken before I had a chance kind of. Anyway, I identify with Elizabeth's character so much and Ben also.
It's so sad too that the writer of this killed himself not long after the release. I'm guessing he probably based the character of "Ben" on himself. A very bittersweet movie that proved once and for all that Nicholas Cage is a terrific actor when given the right material
I randomly watched this on tv many years ago now. It left me feeling so shook and hollow for days. What a film. One of the best movies out there. Nic Cage was just so excellent in it.
Sad and depressing movie but this will let you remember and want to watch again. Love every movie played by Cage. I have listened to this sound track for 20 years, been Sting fan for 27 years. I still love this song today very much.
There is nothing like a beautiful song sung well and that's exactly why I love Angel Eyes sung by Sting from Leaving Las Vegas. I could play this over and over and never get tired of it.
Have you ever had the feeling That the world's gone and left you behind Have you ever had the feeling That you're that close to losing your mind You look around each corner Hoping that she's there You try to play it cool perhaps Pretend that you don't care But it doesn't do a bit of good You got to seek till you find Are you never unwind Try to think That love is not around Still it's uncomfortably near My old heart Ain't gaining no ground Because my angel eyes ain't here Angel eyes That old devil sent They glow unbearably bright Need I say That my love's misspent Misspent with angel eyes tonight So drink up all you people Order anything you see Have fun you happy people The drink and the laugh's on me Pardon me But I gotta run The fact's uncomfortably clear Gotta find Who's now number one And why my angel eyes ain't here Tell me why my angel eyes ain't here Excusez moi my angel eyes ain't here Excuse me while I disappear
I lost one of my best friends in a car crash just before I discovered this movie. At the time it was my escape from the pain I felt and the soundtrack resonated throughout my empty mind. Music and emotion are the most powerful things on earth.
Leaving Las Vegas is my favorite movie of all time. It's the only movie that I liked so much, I bought the movie, the soundtrack, and the book, as well. The book is by John O'Brien, and it's also very good. Even though it's true that most books are better than the movies based on them, it's not entirely true in this case. Even though the book is still very good, Cage and Figgis brought an added darkness to the movie that isn't as apparent in the book, although the book is dark, too, without question. A great read for anyone who felt the movie was special.
Just Loved this film and as always Sting is outstanding.Lyrics are so Haunting and Beautiful with so much truth. 'scuse me while I disappear' have done that to many times into a Bottle.
Great song captures the feelings and mood that Shue and Cage have for each other in the movie.. By far Cage's greatest performance and Shue was incredible as well. Makes you feel like your there in Vegas with them..

Have you ever had the feeling
That the world's gone and left you behind
Have you ever had the feeling
That you're that close to losing your mind
You look around each corner
Hoping that she's there
You try to play it cool perhaps
Pretend that you don't care
But it doesn't do a bit of good
You got to seek till you find
Are you never unwind
Try to think
That love is not around
Still it's uncomfortably near
My old heart
Ain't gaining no ground
Because my angel eyes ain't here
Angel eyes
That old devil sent
They glow unbearably bright
Need I say
That my love's misspent
Misspent with angel eyes tonight
So drink up all you people
Order anything you see
Have fun you happy people
The drink and the laugh's on me
Pardon me
But I gotta run
The fact's uncomfortably clear
Gotta find
Who's now number one
And why my angel eyes ain't here
Tell me why my angel eyes ain't here
Excusez moi my angel eyes ain't here
Excuse me while I disappear
