    Thanks for a really helpful video. I am sure most beginners like me are filled with dread when it comes to pruning . This helped me a lot by clarifying some of the concepts to employ. I might even pluck up the courage to get the bonsai shears out and study some of my young trees. Thanks again 👍🏻✂️🌲

    Thank you for these videos! I am brand new to Bonsai and am trying to learn as much as I can. I just got a teeny tiny Chinese Elm this week. So far, all I can do is stare at it... lol... no CLUE what to do with it, or even if I am supposed to do anything to it yet. 🤪 I am excited to watch it grow though. Hopefully. If I don't end up killing it. 😬

      @@grobonsai thanks! I'm a bit scared I've killed it already. I reported it into another pot in order to get it out of the yucky nursery soil it arrived in and within a day the leaves turned all curled.and crispy and dry and began to fall off. 😔

      I recommend getting a ficus from a reputable seller, and giving it a go! To start with, all you need to focus on is keeping a tree in a pot alive. You will encounter questions as you go, and that’s part of the fun.

    Can you keep a bonsai indoors all year round and how often do you keep trimming it in 21 degrees all year round inside

  • @RJSRanchu
    @RJSRanchu 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello, if there are 8-9 shoots at the top of the tree, will I have to prune and leave just a few to get a new leader to create a taper? Or should I just leave it and will a new leader will form by it self from the 8-9 shoots at the top of the tree.

    • @grobonsai
      @grobonsai  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pick the shoot that is the best compromise between strength (thickness) and angle. That’s your trunk leader. Pick one or two shoots as side branches, cut them to length. Remove the rest

    I see you keep using a spherical rather than straight recessed branch cutter. Is this what is generally preferred?

    • @grobonsai
      @grobonsai  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like it because it is easy to get a nice angle no matter what the branch shape, easy to clean the cut after.

    My bonsai lost its leaves at the top. He is now recovering but it’s growing at the bottom to the sides at first. The crown is still very bald.
    Do I have to cut the braches at the bottom to get it more green at the top?
    they’re getting very big and growing sideways

    Can anyone explain what he meant by cutting the divisions of threes back to twos? I'm not sure exactly what that would look like. Like if I branch branches off into 3 cut one off?

    • @grobonsai
      @grobonsai  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Where one branch divides into three, prune one to leave two behind. Or where there are two shoots coming from the same place. I’ll try make a quick video or post a diagram to make it clearer.

    At what time of the year is it ok to prune a bonsai?

    • @grobonsai
      @grobonsai  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are several times that are good, it depends mostly on the species of tree? Generally, spring before new buds open, early summer once growth has become mature, and autumn/fall are good times, but there are exceptions

  • @BillyBobJoeSnr
    @BillyBobJoeSnr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Some sound advice but I need to lay down after that. The editing is wild.
    I know we both like ugly trees but you may think about doing an air layer just above the second branch to build something with great taper in a couple of years.
