I met Jimi backstage before a show in 1968. I then watched the show from the orchestra pit. I asked him to play Purple Haze, but he told me "no man, I'm so tired of playin' that". Minutes later he pointed at me and said "for you" and proceeded to play a blow out version of Purple Haze!! I died and went to heaven.

I would agree that Mitch and Noel deserve some credit. However, to say they were his equals on this song? IMHO, it's Jimi's musicianship. His unique inimitable sound and approach to the guitar that's on display here. In proper context, no one had heard or had seen anyone play the guitar, or make it sound like that. He freaked people-out! Additionally, Jimi is playing lead, rhythm, and embellishments, all the while playing bass accompaniment on the low E string (at times). There's a lot going on here. A lot of layers and technical processes to Jimi's playing. That's what's driving the massive sound of this power trio, Jimi. Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top called Jimi Hendrix, "a singularity." That's why we are still talking about him 50 years later 🙂☮

July 4th, 1969 Jimi played Star Spangled Banner for us at Atlanta Pop. A month and a half later he left us behind forever. The guitar strap he wore that night, brown with Xs , is being used by David Gilmour in most of his latest performances. David's wife bought it for him as a birthday present. When I see Gilmour playing and using that strap, it takes me waaaaaay back to my youth and fills me with more emotion than I can ever relate!! My two favorite guitarists!

Some MCs continued introducing his band as The Experience despite him ditching the name in 1969 after Noel Redding left the band. Thereafter Hendrix started using different names such as Band of Gypsies (Fillmore East) or Gypsy Sun Rainbows (Woodstock) and Wild Blue Angels (Isle Of Wight festival).
Jimi Hendrix - Add ... "All Along the Watch Tower" ... "Fox Lady" ... and ..."Fire" ... to that list. He actually set his guitar on fire at the end of "Fire" ... Then there is ... "Voodoo Child"... and ..."Little Wing" .... He is also famous for playing the National Anthem at Woodstock. Stevie Ray Vaughan did GREAT covers of "Voodoo Child"... and ..."Little Wing" I don't know if Stevie did the 'Teeth' thing but he did do the behind the back thing.
Although he was American, he got his start in England. This was his first big U.S. show (Monterey Pop Festival 1967). After losing an argument with the Who's Pete Townsend about which act was going to play first (neither wanted to follow the other), Hendrix said "if I'm following you, I'm pulling out all of the stops". The show ended with him setting his guitar on fire while it was still plugged in.
This is great version of the song, but for a greater appreciation of just how great a guitarist the man was, check out "Bold As Love" or even "Machine Gun" from the Fillmore East in 1970. Other essential Hendrix songs are "Voodoo Chile" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", Purple Haze", "If 6 Was 9", "The Burning Of The Midnight Lamp", "Manic Depression", "Little Wing" and "1983".
Playing guitar with teeth, playing behind the head, behind the back, and between the legs are all old bar band tricks that Hendrix learned in his early days of gigging. He was just better at it than anyone else . . . except for T-Bone Walker. Walker could play a solo behind his head while slowly doing a split to the floor. Without missing a beat. In the 1940s.

Jimi Hendrix is the ultimate cool on stage. I saw him perform in the late 1960’s , and his concerts can get pretty wild. He formed his band in London in 1966, and played in many clubs. Word quickly got out, and soon the greatest bands of the day including members of The Beatles went to see him. Everyone admired his guitar skill, and he soon became a sensation and later a legend.
Stevie Ray Vaugh is another guitarist from the 80s and 90s that will blow your mind. His singing is amazing also. The song, Texas Flood live at the El Mocabo is widely reacted to and loved by many!! He admired Jimi greatly and played several of his songs. And his swag is also out of this world!!!
Obviously not in the same class but Ally Venable is from Texas and she took up the guitar after hearing SRV and she also plays behind her back and is influenced by Hendrix too. She does a SRV tribute instrumental and has covered a couple of his songs. It just goes to show Hendrix and SRV influence lives on as she's only 24. I am sure she's not alone but she comes to mind.
Jimi Hendrix captured my attention when I was 10 years old and I have not stopped listening to him every day. His legendary show at Monterey was in every and all media as a ' madman' that set his guitar ablaze. Jimi was so far ahead of the times with his psychedelic influenced sound, he gained immense popularity and became the highest paid performer on the planet{Jimi was scammed and struggled somewhat financially due to theft of money he earned at his shows}, he however completely changed what music is for my young pre teen mind forever. Your reactions are cute { as are you}, but in 1967 psychedelia was barely started and Jimi ( John Allen Hendrix given birth name} transformed electric guitar and music forever. He is still teaching me things about life 56 years later. Listen to "House Burning Down' for more astonishing solo playing. It is surprising how rarely that masterpiece is mentioned. He has a powerful message in those lyrics he talked about only one time I have been able to find. You had to be there when music was kind of lost and needed Jimi desperately.
Jimi wasn't ahead of his time , he was of his time and came to england on a promise made by Chas Chandler to meet Eric Clapton and form a band like Cream. Cream came first and influenced every single rock band that came afterwards including The Experience.
With Jimi you always had the feeling that the guitar was part of his body. That and his perfect pitch made him the best guitarist of all time. A talent like this is probably only born once in 100 years... And... you kids are so cute when you're surprised with things like that. Most of the good songs have been composed long ago. In some cases, centuries ago. You wouldn't believe how many metal guitarists were inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach...
Yep I took private music lessons on 5 different instruments over 14 years from 1965 to 1978 growing up. I took saxophone studies with The Royal Academy of Music {Canada} which was a lot of classical music accompanied by piano. Along the way I fell in love with progressive rock where there's a lot of classical music influences with British Bands like; Yes, The Zombies, Early Genesis, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Argent, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, The Pretty Things......🎶🫴🕊

"Hey Joe"was a song that seemingly every group recorded in the 60s, or at least it seems that way. The author of the song is commonly listed as Billy Roberts, a folk singer that copyrighted the song, but there's a dispute in some circles if he alone wrote the song. The most common versions aside from Jimi's are recordings by The Leaves, Love and the Byrds, among many, many others. Jimi's version has a much slower tempo than many of the versions that were recorded (Love and the Byrds are two of my favorite bands and their "fast" versions of the song are abysmal), which he based on a version recorded by a fella named Tim Rose, another folk singer/musician. Many people talk about Jimi's prowess as a guitar player (with good reason), but a lot of the stage antics he did such as playing with his teeth and behind his head and back were old school tricks that many traveling musicians had done to wow the crowds, be it on the vaudeville stages before recorded music existed, the "chitlin' circuit" of the jazz, blues and early rock eras or the soul music revues of the early 60s. T-Bone Walker, would play behind his back, do splits, the whole nine yards; Chuck Berry had his "duck walk"; Johnny "Guitar" Watson, who was certainly an inspiration to Jimi (and any guitar player that ever heard the cat), is documented as having played his guitar with his teeth. But all of the stagecraft was likely passed down from someone else. Every musician, no matter how talented, is a thief on some level. Jimi never gets enough credit for his work as an interpreter of other songwriters. His version of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower", considered by many, including Dylan, as the definitive version of the song is proof enough. But his versions of Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Drifter's Escape" are fantastic as well. His version of "Hey Joe" is likewise the definitive version of the song now. And his version of "Catfish Blues" is my favorite version of that old blues standard. Jimi was a giant in so many ways. May he forever be heard. One of my favorite bits of Jimi video is his performance on the Lulu show on the BBC in 1969. He and the Experience performed "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", a truncated version of "Hey Joe" (which includes a nifty little nod to the Beatles' "I Feel Fine") and a tribute to the band Cream, that had recently broken up, an instrumental version of their tune, "Sunshine of Your Love".

I saw him play at Denver Pop festival in a Baseball Stadium. Hard to believe but, I also saw him on the University of Oklahoma campus in a basketball size gymnasium. He gave just a few days notice, and it wasn't the full production, but it was clear his guitar was lead + rhythm + percussion. Lotta sound coming out of that man.
Jimi is my favorite musician of all time, I'm so happy that I finally get to see him play live, when I was young in the 60-70s it was impossible where I lived✌
Two thoughts...Jimi's outfit was inspired by Little Richard and the fashion of London's Carnaby Street and It's easier to play behind your back than it is to play with your teeth(Jimi learned to do both when he toured as a backing musician in the south of the USA).
Jimi played in the "Chitlins Circuit" in southern USA. If you couldn't do something cool like play with your teeth the costumers would throw bottles at you. But this wasn't a new thing. It was new to huge shows like Monterey Pot Festival. Janus Joplin had herself made a star at this gig. Jimi sacrifices his guitar as he closes of his show. Lighting it on fire to "Wild Thing".

Years ago, when I had just started learning to play guitar, my more-experienced guitar-playing sister told me that I needed to investigate an amazing guitarist named Jimi Hendrix, who could play with his teeth, & eventually I got to see films and videos of Jimi perforrming (He was still alive then). Jimi was so exciting to watch! Jimi had learned how to play the guitar with his teeth, which is very difficult and uncomfortable to do!
Can you imagine what it was like to see Jimi Hendrix and The Experience live? I did that more than once. Jimi was ten blocks up the street from all other musical artists. He was on a different level completely musically. It looks so effortless, yes? Jimi and his guitar were one. He could even make the guitar speak. So proficient with the guitar that playing was really no longer an issue. The music went straight from Jimi over the guitar completely effortlessly. Astonishing, phenomenal, and simply beyond words. Genius then, genius now. Next one to watch? Jimi Hendrix Johnny B Goode, Berkeley. Prepare to be mind blown. Hay Joe was an old (accustic guitar) blues song. Jimi was great on stage, (setting his guitar on fire, etc). But you really need to listen to his studio recordings. (All along the watch tower, etc). As you listen, imaging the truth, that NO ONE SOUNDED ANYTHING LIKE HIM DURING OR BEFORE. All the music you have listened to in you life has already been influenced by him.
If you like Jimi and his guitar, you need to react to his performance of "Wild Thing" at the Monterey Pop Festival. You won't believe what he does at the end with his guitar.
He's awesome and a great guitar player. He is thought by some to be the goat....but there are others on that list. I love all his music. You should go down the rabbit hole and enjoy yourself!

"Voodoo Child"... and ..."Little Wing" .... He is also famous for playing the National Anthem at Woodstock. Stevie Ray Vaughan did GREAT covers of "Voodoo Child"... and ..."Little Wing" I don't know if Stevie did the 'Teeth' thing but he did do the behind the back thing.
No, he set his guitar on fire at the end of "Wild Thing" at the Monterey Pop Festival.
Although he was American, he got his start in England. This was his first big U.S. show (Monterey Pop Festival 1967). After losing an argument with the Who's Pete Townsend about which act was going to play first (neither wanted to follow the other), Hendrix said "if I'm following you, I'm pulling out all of the stops". The show ended with him setting his guitar on fire while it was still plugged in.
This is great version of the song, but for a greater appreciation of just how great a guitarist the man was, check out "Bold As Love" or even "Machine Gun" from the Fillmore East in 1970. Other essential Hendrix songs are "Voodoo Chile" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", Purple Haze", "If 6 Was 9", "The Burning Of The Midnight Lamp", "Manic Depression", "Little Wing" and "1983".
Jimi came from another plane...graced up for a few years and went back to where he came from. RIP Jimi!

Jimi Hendrix is the ultimate cool on stage. I saw him perform in the late 1960’s , and his concerts can get pretty wild. He formed his band in London in 1966, and played in many clubs. Word quickly got out, and soon the greatest bands of the day including members of The Beatles went to see him. Everyone admired his guitar skill, and he soon became a sensation and later a legend.
Stevie Ray Vaugh is another guitarist from the 80s and 90s that will blow your mind. His singing is amazing also. The song, Texas Flood live at the El Mocabo is widely reacted to and loved by many!! He admired Jimi greatly and played several of his songs. And his swag is also out of this world!!!
Obviously not in the same class but Ally Venable is from Texas and she took up the guitar after hearing SRV and she also plays behind her back and is influenced by Hendrix too. She does a SRV tribute instrumental and has covered a couple of his songs. It just goes to show Hendrix and SRV influence lives on as she's only 24. I am sure she's not alone but she comes to mind.

Jimi Hendrix captured my attention when I was 10 years old and I have not stopped listening to him every day. His legendary show at Monterey was in every and all media as a ' madman' that set his guitar ablaze. Jimi was so far ahead of the times with his psychedelic influenced sound, he gained immense popularity and became the highest paid performer on the planet{Jimi was scammed and struggled somewhat financially due to theft of money he earned at his shows}, he however completely changed what music is for my young pre teen mind forever. Your reactions are cute { as are you}, but in 1967 psychedelia was barely started and Jimi ( John Allen Hendrix given birth name} transformed electric guitar and music forever. He is still teaching me things about life 56 years later. Listen to "House Burning Down' for more astonishing solo playing. It is surprising how rarely that masterpiece is mentioned. He has a powerful message in those lyrics he talked about only one time I have been able to find. You had to be there when music was kind of lost and needed Jimi desperately.
Jimi wasn't ahead of his time , he was of his time and came to england on a promise made by Chas Chandler to meet Eric Clapton and form a band like Cream.
Cream came first and influenced every single rock band that came afterwards including The Experience.

Yep I took private music lessons on 5 different instruments over 14 years from 1965 to 1978 growing up. I took saxophone studies with The Royal Academy of Music {Canada} which was a lot of classical music accompanied by piano. Along the way I fell in love with progressive rock where there's a lot of classical music influences with British Bands like; Yes, The Zombies, Early Genesis, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Argent, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, The Pretty Things......🎶🫴🕊

"Hey Joe"was a song that seemingly every group recorded in the 60s, or at least it seems that way. The author of the song is commonly listed as Billy Roberts, a folk singer that copyrighted the song, but there's a dispute in some circles if he alone wrote the song. The most common versions aside from Jimi's are recordings by The Leaves, Love and the Byrds, among many, many others. Jimi's version has a much slower tempo than many of the versions that were recorded (Love and the Byrds are two of my favorite bands and their "fast" versions of the song are abysmal), which he based on a version recorded by a fella named Tim Rose, another folk singer/musician.
Many people talk about Jimi's prowess as a guitar player (with good reason), but a lot of the stage antics he did such as playing with his teeth and behind his head and back were old school tricks that many traveling musicians had done to wow the crowds, be it on the vaudeville stages before recorded music existed, the "chitlin' circuit" of the jazz, blues and early rock eras or the soul music revues of the early 60s. T-Bone Walker, would play behind his back, do splits, the whole nine yards; Chuck Berry had his "duck walk"; Johnny "Guitar" Watson, who was certainly an inspiration to Jimi (and any guitar player that ever heard the cat), is documented as having played his guitar with his teeth. But all of the stagecraft was likely passed down from someone else. Every musician, no matter how talented, is a thief on some level.
Jimi never gets enough credit for his work as an interpreter of other songwriters. His version of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower", considered by many, including Dylan, as the definitive version of the song is proof enough. But his versions of Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Drifter's Escape" are fantastic as well. His version of "Hey Joe" is likewise the definitive version of the song now. And his version of "Catfish Blues" is my favorite version of that old blues standard. Jimi was a giant in so many ways. May he forever be heard.
One of my favorite bits of Jimi video is his performance on the Lulu show on the BBC in 1969. He and the Experience performed "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", a truncated version of "Hey Joe" (which includes a nifty little nod to the Beatles' "I Feel Fine") and a tribute to the band Cream, that had recently broken up, an instrumental version of their tune, "Sunshine of Your Love".

I saw him play at Denver Pop festival in a Baseball Stadium. Hard to believe but, I also saw him on the University of Oklahoma campus in a basketball size gymnasium.
He gave just a few days notice, and it wasn't the full production, but it was clear his guitar was lead + rhythm + percussion. Lotta sound coming out of that man.

Two thoughts...Jimi's outfit was inspired by Little Richard and the fashion of London's Carnaby Street and It's easier to play behind your back than it is to play with your teeth(Jimi learned to do both when he toured as a backing musician in the south of the USA).

Jimi played in the "Chitlins Circuit" in southern USA. If you couldn't do something cool like play with your teeth the costumers would throw bottles at you. But this wasn't a new thing. It was new to huge shows like Monterey Pot Festival. Janus Joplin had herself made a star at this gig. Jimi sacrifices his guitar as he closes of his show. Lighting it on fire to "Wild Thing".

Years ago, when I had just started learning to play guitar, my more-experienced guitar-playing sister told me that I needed to investigate an amazing guitarist named Jimi Hendrix, who could play with his teeth, & eventually I got to see films and videos of Jimi perforrming (He was still alive then). Jimi was so exciting to watch!

Can you imagine what it was like to see Jimi Hendrix and The Experience live? I did that more than once. Jimi was ten blocks up the street from all other musical artists. He was on a different level completely musically. It looks so effortless, yes? Jimi and his guitar were one. He could even make the guitar speak. So proficient with the guitar that playing was really no longer an issue. The music went straight from Jimi over the guitar completely effortlessly. Astonishing, phenomenal, and simply beyond words. Genius then, genius now. Next one to watch? Jimi Hendrix Johnny B Goode, Berkeley. Prepare to be mind blown.

Hay Joe was an old (accustic guitar) blues song. Jimi was great on stage, (setting his guitar on fire, etc). But you really need to listen to his studio recordings. (All along the watch tower, etc).
