“She’s a dream doll that I wanted before she existed.” That’s exactly how I feel about Melody! I loved Motown music and the history and culture of Detroit, MI and the Civil Rights Movement.
From the time I was 7 I wanted a Motown era doll. It took 17 years… but Melody came out and lives in Detroit and loves to sing and loves Motown.
But since she didn’t exist I was a Molly girl. Re: turnips - the story was important because it illustrated how during World War II people grew victory gardens and had to ration food.
It was the easiest and most striking (you remember it, don’t you?) way to show that there wasn’t choices like we have today. There’s no “I’ll just eat something else” - that wasn’t an option because soldiers needed food. Even though Molly’s dad was a doctor and her family wasn’t as poor as Kit’s, she still had to be thrifty and resourceful because it was the /good/ thing to do and because even if you weren’t patriotic, you had to use food ration stamps.

Personally, I really like Julie because of her long hair. I love playing with my dolls’ hair and Julie has a lot to work with, and that’s very appealing to me.

That is a very valid point! I've never really been a hair person so maybe that's why. 🤷

the US still got a lot of influence from the Victorian period of England in the early 1900s (Samantha was from 1904 I believe). there are tons of classic Victorian style homes in much of the east coast (most prominently providence RI and southern NJ) and this style is a common architecture that still exists today. I dont think victorian homes are still built and of course the queen is no longer Victoria but it is still appropriate to refer to Samantha's era as "Victorian" even though she lived in the US :)

Exactly there’s a ton of Victorian homes still in CT, NY and NJ. In the UK they don’t even build Victorian homes anymore

Oh my, i am enjoying your videos bit sonce historical dolls are my passion as well, i would rank them all so differently that I don't even know where to begin. 😂😅😂.
Anyway, it was fun, and we would never be competing for the same dolls. 😂
