Khan Academy taught me just about everything I know in Algebra, Trig and Pre-Calc, after being homeschooled for a few years, and it did it in a matter of weeks. The thought of such a powerful tool being available to every child is nothing short of uplifting. Please, keep up the good work.
I define it the way the dictionary defines it. "Irony is a rhetorical device, literary technique, or situation in which there is a sharp incongruity or discordance that goes beyond the simple and evident intention of words or actions"
I see what you are saying, but you can use a device (tablets for example) in order to write equations and sketch out stuff. The use of paper won't be needed and since the demand will drop then companies will reduce deforestation, which is also a benefit for the environment.
8 years later, and I'm still waiting for the inflection point to show itself. Despite people like Sal and Grant Sanderson, somewhere there is 'dark matter' preventing students from getting on board. Unfortunately, I think the power of advertising has decreased the human attention span below the threshold where abstract learning can occur. It took me 40' to learn a proof of the Pythagorean theorem or to learn how Eratosthenes calculated the earth circumference and to feel that sense of accomplishment. That dopamine hit. Today, we need to get that dopamine hit within a 30 second meme, a sound bite, a gif, a tweet. The only way to beat this is an interface that lets a silicon based cpu augment a human brain. Then we can upload complex concepts quickly (and give an endorphin kick to boot).
Sal you are the man, your videos are awesome after being out of school for 20+ years I decided to go back and get a degree and your videos helped me get through my technical math class not only did I get through it I got an A in it. Thanks man P.S. did anybody tell you look like Ray Romano.
Wow this was a nice video.. I had no idea that the guy in the top comments, Sal, was the narrator for the videos. Still, I loved their ideas. I mean it's the first time I've ever seen online teaching presented in a well explained and practical way.
Absolutely, especially considering the US's decline in study habits. I did some research and saw that a ton of high school students don't study at all (which makes them more likely to not even attend college). Forcing students to learn at one pace just doesn't work with dense subjects (which is why personal practice is key).
the last thing that bror saxberg said i can seriously relate to; most of my teachers only go through things once, and your never able to get a hang of it or confidence to answer test questions easily. Plus, Salman, you are deservedly hitting the big time my friend! Maybe khanacademy could change the whole education system and maybe be more influential then things like facebook!!!!
I don't think it's quite like that. I think whether you're doing For or Non-profit says something about your perspective as a human as well. It symbolizes those kinds of people not basing their education and reality on care, but more towards efficiency. You do something for free because of the feeling of doing good and caring. While the profit is because you're more concerned with making sure your needs are met and you're going to survive. We're instinctual first, then rational.
Whether it's MIT and Harvard?! What about EDUonGo?! That's a Seattle based educational platform built specifically for tablets and browsers. It has an integrated e-textbook reader, social media aspects, and interactive whiteboard, etc. I think EDUonGo is the way of the future.....trust me, you'll hear about them soon.
well he is one of the best. he just 'gets' and connects things like very few people can(or should I say khan? tee hee). it's not seldom that I find his explanation more clear and profound than most of books/videos/professors i have access to.
For Ages there have been Brilliant people, but then there are the RARE PEDIGREE of Brilliant people.......those who PERSONALLY IMPACT US in a LIFE-CHANGING way, and that is SALMAN KHAN!
Hi Sal I am a great fan of your work. and I am thinking of implenting your teaching strategies i.e the flipped class room in my country Pakistan. Let me know How can I do this At the moment schools are reluctant to adopt this as some teachers think this will take students interest out of the class room
All I have to say is, Why are we still using pen and paper? It's super old and we have so much technology right now. I don't want to be old and tell my grandchildren "Back in my days...we still used paper and pen."
Do you write equations and sketch out stuff on paper? I do and think this is vital for learning. Merely watching videos will not make calculus, algebra, etc stick; you need to do exercises too, and I think pen and paper are the best way to do it. I know Khan Academy has exercises on his site, but to arrive at an answer you still need to manipulate/solve the equations and this can only be done effectively (unless I'm missing something) using pen and paper.
maybe they are getting ready for the future markets, and online free & quality education just slip their grip. maybe that explains their "concern" and "interest" in this new format of education D:
all these are alternate way of education, for those who want it to maybe adult education not for the ones starting out, the whole point of getting kids into school groups is for them to learn social skills of dealing with each other, even in colleges it is same principal, human interaction is very important. the recent lockdown going on already has proved it, isolation is not healthy or fruitful.
Tech in the classrooms aren't helping, it is only making people more dependent on it rather than being dependent of themselves. Technology has for years now throwing the education system off course but it can't be of fault entirely, where parents aren't encouraging and are not molding a bright individual, there is nothing tech in classrooms can do except make it worst. Although there are the few who are encouraged by it, i feel that physical books with practicality has been a proficient system.
Expertise is not a joke because if someone isn't efficiently and carefully an expert, that person can teach total garbage, Expertise is a sense that what that person does is credible and many testimonies to great, expert work, is a sign of reliability and thus moves us towards safety and connectivity. Awareness of what 2 and 2 represent is more important than solving the equation itself. Please take these words as encouragment towards harmony in consciousness, not resentment and self-regret
3:30 I use MIT Open Course Ware and study it under my own volition (I'm 41) to help in my job. Sure others do, but perhaps Mr Gates is just getting at not that many people use it yet.
9.95 a month for high quality education? That is a steal. Most people pay for frivolous monthly subscriptions that cost much more (DirecTV for example). For a little under 2.5 bucks a week, you could access a service that is based around enriching yourself. Granted, Khan Academy is free but that doesn't mean that every business model should follow it.
Everyone is in it for the money except Sal Khan. Dont they realize that the biggest problem with education today is the cost? And most of these people are still trying to make a buck out of children.
In the Age of Coronavirus...THIS IS A REVOLUTION whose time has come!!! World Class education FOR FREE! Why are hard workers penalized from succeeding (i.e. paying so much in (property) taxes to build buildings that have nothing to do with education) when Khan Academy could be instituted everywhere? Parents...make sure your local school board knows about this; talk to your politicians who champion education. Break the grip that teacher's unions (administrator heavy/salary heavy) and get the teachers on board to push this 21st century form of education to the forefront!
I think it's similar to the Japanese (my favorite culture). Indeed, but the results are impressive. They come over here and do extremely well in hard technical subjects (I know since I'm a CS major at a community college right now). If you know what you want out of life, education will always help. Just a matter of taking action and taking advantage of your resources.
The coincidence is in them finding his stuff online... not his popularity. You are failing to see that both Google and Gates could just as easily have decided not to fund his work had they not believed in him... His popularity is an intended/ unintended consequence of his passion and work... Gates and Google are good enablers... It's like saying Tesla's popularity grew because he was funded by JPMorgan...No, his popularity grew because he was a crazy brilliant manic who gave a lot to society.
oh, no, sorry, I'm also white. I was just using there skin color to distinguish them because it's easier than saying "bill gates, the editor of time, and that other guy".
Me too! They're VERY good. I think "nobody uses them" as Bill Gates said because there's not a big awareness of them being available for free on TH-cam.
Khan Academy has been an invaluable tool in my pursuit to become an engineer. I can not thank Sal Khan, and the team behind Khan Academy enough.
Thank you khan for saving humanity
Khan Academy taught me just about everything I know in Algebra, Trig and Pre-Calc, after being homeschooled for a few years, and it did it in a matter of weeks. The thought of such a powerful tool being available to every child is nothing short of uplifting. Please, keep up the good work.
I LOVE YOU KHAN! You've saved my grades !!
Poor guy tells his story every time .. Love it when he speaks ! you are the best Salman !
Khan is one of the few people about whom you can say for sure that is changing the world for better.
Khan you are my real teacher. Even if anyone asks me who is your highschool maths teacher I will say your name. Let all our blessings be with you.
I define it the way the dictionary defines it.
"Irony is a rhetorical device, literary technique, or situation in which there is a sharp incongruity or discordance that goes beyond the simple and evident intention of words or actions"
Look at Sal's posture. He knows his place! It's right in our hearts!! :)
Beautifully put
I see what you are saying, but you can use a device (tablets for example) in order to write equations and sketch out stuff. The use of paper won't be needed and since the demand will drop then companies will reduce deforestation, which is also a benefit for the environment.

If you want to talk about dopamine from memes, don't forget the huge dopamine you get from porn.
Would really like to see this in 720p.
Sal you are the man, your videos are awesome after being out of school for 20+ years I decided to go back and get a degree and your videos helped me get through my technical math class not only did I get through it I got an A in it.

This needs way more views...
its not about money. Khan Academy is doing an amazing thing. Hopefully this systems stays true to its roots.
That's what is need in education today. Keep up the good work Sal.
Boy, I sure do love an intelligent discussion.
Wow, you've come a long way. The world loves you Sal.
TH-cam might still be rendering the higher res version, but that's merely my uneducated guess.
the last thing that bror saxberg said i can seriously relate to; most of my teachers only go through things once, and your never able to get a hang of it or confidence to answer test questions easily. Bill poured himself the smallest glass of water I've ever seen
🤣 he was interrupted by Isaacson.
Where can one find the full panel?

I looked at that those MIT vids of Walter, might watch the polarization for a review, I know everything else pretty well. I recommend them.
There is already one teacher per twenty children in our some of our classrooms in Trinidad and Tobago
Sal Khan, Future of education.
I'd like to hear the questions from the audience!
From what time are you? How does someone "sound" white or not? And what difference would it make in the first place?
Whether it's MIT and Harvard?! What about EDUonGo?! That's a Seattle based educational platform built specifically for tablets and browsers. It has an integrated e-textbook reader, social media aspects, and interactive whiteboard, etc. I think EDUonGo is the way of the future.....trust me, you'll hear about them soon.
@khanacademy On the off chance you didn't think of this first, you could just create a cap on the max number of points a student can get per day.
This is fantastic! Can't way to see how things unfold as Im already betting on where Art education will go!
is it los altos high school that uses technology they explained?
Those people setting the seats, failed their code inspections last week.
if someone sees this, then please write the advantages of the academy
why are inteview chairs designed to be so low??
who is that man on the right? I couldn't get his company's name.
Does anyone think this type of digital learning will actually overrun the teaching profession? obviously not now but say in 50yrs time.
Is that all you have to say for yourself? I'll take that as a concession.
well he is one of the best. he just 'gets' and connects things like very few people can(or should I say khan? tee hee). it's not seldom that I find his explanation more clear and profound than most of books/videos/professors i have access to.
Looks like a digitized TV recording. But what difference does it make? It's not like this is an action movie.
For Ages there have been Brilliant people, but then there are the RARE PEDIGREE of Brilliant people.......those who PERSONALLY IMPACT US in a LIFE-CHANGING way, and that is SALMAN KHAN!
Khan Academy
(This should be their motto)"Redefining Class Education"
Hi Sal
I am a great fan of your work. and I am thinking of implenting your teaching strategies i.e the flipped class room in my country Pakistan. Let me know How can I do this
At the moment schools are reluctant to adopt this as some teachers think this will take students interest out of the class room
not only america... all the countries must do the same thing and just start being in peace...
It doesn't have essential info on the convention? It would at least have it's full name and date.
All I have to say is, Why are we still using pen and paper? It's super old and we have so much technology right now. I don't want to be old and tell my grandchildren "Back in my days...we still used paper and pen."

No one else in the world does what Sal man Khan does. Name 1?
Loved the foundation reference!
Nope. The TED speech was after Khan and Bill met. Lol love the typo "Salmon". :)
Sal Khan is a superhero.
maybe they are getting ready for the future markets, and online free & quality education just slip their grip. maybe that explains their "concern" and "interest" in this new format of education D:
the profit model is producing dozens of overqualified applicants for ONE job...it's an evil we can live without !!...ROCK ON SAL !!
Source?

oh bb, I thought this day would never come
There's nothing you can't learn from the Internet , the whole human knowledge is online its crazy !
In Sal we praise.
3:30 I use MIT Open Course Ware and study it under my own volition (I'm 41) to help in my job. Sure others do, but perhaps Mr Gates is just getting at not that many people use it yet.

Why were you shocked?
Pitty you weren't first, would be fun to see your fish smile when you thank him...
I Love khan Academy ! you are my inspiration !!!!
You will revolutionised the education world . Great

Brilliant argument.
Thanks for the clarification.
Cool story bro.

good work Sal!
I agree with the interactive text books.
Let the money follow the child. Vouchers save smart kids from failing schools.
I can listen Khan better 'cause I hear his lessons regularly :)
addicted to math.. How interesting..
we need 24 teachers per 1 student.
Good Job Sal
If you say so buddy
talks about technology
uses 360p
Why would that be ironic?
oh, no, sorry, I'm also white. I was just using there skin color to distinguish them because it's easier than saying "bill gates, the editor of time, and that other guy".
Me too! They're VERY good. I think "nobody uses them" as Bill Gates said because there's not a big awareness of them being available for free on TH-cam.
Step One: Get the government out of education entirely.
Tech is helping us
And how exactly is that ironic?
Yup.
A face to the voice!
Thumbs up for Sal!
Antes de você pedir eu já fiz.
I...don't know what to say...
my impression is that Bill Gates and all those CEOs just don't want him giving stuff for free. D:
