Our teams in Europe are hundreds of years old. Backing your team is like backing your city in a war. Its like modern day war without the deaths (mostly).
Sport and Politics definitely go hand in hand here. These 'rivalries' have existed for a ridiculously long time. The game itself is nearly as old as the US itself.

As a European myself and a regular in the stands i must say theres nothing better than singing and jumping with friends, family and basically everyone in the city. All the passion and love for the team is basically passed through generations. Football is like a different religion to us and we sure love to express our love for the badge at the front rather than the name of the player on the back

bro you were talking about ultras and protests, it's tricky here, because some groups are paid to go there and riot, others just to fight the cops or maybe they feel that they need to protest for that cause. Ultras in my city, for example were part of all major protest in last 15 years, and usually we go there because we hate the politicians(all of them), and to be honest, all big protests ended up with huge riots, and belive me we know how to riot and we enjoy that :)

It depends from country to country and from club to club. I would say that in general larger countries with better and more competitive leagues have more of a city or region patriotism or loyalty while in smaller nations you tend to have more nationalistic fans, but there are exceptions.
Clubs also can have their own ideology or platform, if you are a catholic and live in Glasgow you will be a Celtic fan but if you are protestant you will be a Rangers fans, or if you are right or extreme right wing in Rome Italy chances are that you will support Lazio. If you support independent Catalonia in Spain you will support Barcelona or if you consider yourself Basque you will be Bilbao supporter examples are numerous and clubs divide on numerous things from things like politics and religion, national or regional identity to local community, workers and rich to style of play and stuff like that...

Football is local rather than national, I would say. Many clubs were born out of grassroots teams. Rival clubs within one town or city may have been born out of industry teams, for example a miners team & steel workers team or in some towns religion. A Catholic team & protestant team.
Fans generally follow the local team, it's generations old, regardless of whether they're a successful team in a top league or not.
Unlike the American league system, our clubs have the ability to be promoted or relegated. By never having to fight to stay in a league or move up to the next one, it takes the excitement & incentive out of the game.
In the US all the money is poured only into a small group of teams while smaller local teams know they're never going to get a chance to be at the top or win a competition.
Passion in Europe is believing. Knowing your local team & city can make it to a top league & or win a tournament. You earn more revenue the higher you go & top clubs pass on share TV & sponsorship revenue with lower leagues. If you don't perform well & end up in the bottom 3 at the end of the season, you're relegated to lower league next season. For fans you live the good times & the bad.
That's my unprofessional opinion anyway lol I'm not a big football fan.

The chainsaw is Portland Timbers mascot Timber Joey, and yes. He's a woodcutter as his profession.
Timbers Army and the 107ist group, both Timbers fan groups are the only decent fans in the US.
At their best they can almost reach softer European standard.
They are passionate and have a huge rivalry with Shittle Flounders.. I mean Seattle Sounders.
The two groups hate each other.
I'm from Skåne in Sweden and my team are the Most Champions of Sweden, Malmö FF with 22 league gold and 15 cup gold.
